France Telecom’s Orange: Apple iPhone 5 pre-orders surpass iPhone 4 and 4S records

“Demand for Apple Inc’s new iPhone 5 has exceeded initial supply as the company booked 2 million orders in one day and pushed the delivery date for some preorders to next month,” Poornima Gupta and Sayantani Ghosh report for Reuters. “Apple said on Monday that it would deliver most preordered phones as planned by Friday, the first day of delivery, but many would not be available until October.”

“It is not unusual for Apple products to sell out the first day. Last October, the company booked 1 million orders for the previous iPhone, the 4S, in the first 24 hours,” Gupta and Ghosh report. “That beat Apple’s previous one-day record of 600,000 sales for the iPhone 4. The latest strong preorders could mean a strong holiday quarter for Apple.”

Gupta and Ghosh report, “AT&T, the No. 2 U.S. mobile service provider, said demand over the weekend had made the iPhone 5 the fastest-selling iPhone the company has ever offered. AT&T did not disclose how many iPhones it had sold, but said the iPhone 5 was still available for preorder and would go on sale Sept. 21 at AT&T retail stores.”

“The phone’s other carriers, Verizon Communications Inc and Sprint Nextel Corp, also showed similar delays in shipping the phone,” Gupta and Ghosh report. “European carriers also reported brisk sales. France Telecom’s Orange said bookings for the new phone ‘have been very strong, breaking the records of what we saw for the iPhone 4 or 4S.” But the carrier said it could deliver preorders on time.'”

  1. It’s great to see iPhone sales so strong in France, inasmuch as Europe has never been considered an area of great strength for iPhones and the European economy is sick.  I can’t wait to see how iPhone 5 does in China!

    1. The numbers may not agree but everyone I know either has an iPhone and is getting an iPhone the next time their contract ends or does not have an iPhone and is getting one the next time their contract ends.

From my vantage point is is 75% iPhone and 25 the entire rest, including dumb phones.

  2. France Telecom is one of two European operators that are building LTE over the 1800 MHz spectrum whereas the larger European carriers at this point will only be able to operate iPhone 5s over HSPA on 900, 1900 and 2100 MHz bands which is less than half the potential speed (albeit still quicker than past iPhones). I’m therefore not surprised by this report.

  3. I preordered today at the orange Website, after 4 attempts earlier that ended up to an error page. Seems servers were not sized enough…

I hope this is the return of iPhone here… Too many same-sung s3!
