Apple’s yearly wallpaper refresh is no longer just a gallery of new backgrounds. In iOS 27, the wallpaper picker itself becomes a creation tool, letting you generate custom iPhone wallpapers without leaving Settings. That’s according to 9to5Mac‘s Ryan Christoffel, who walked through how the feature actually works.
Apple still ships official iOS 27 wallpapers, but the bigger change sits inside Image Playground. Apple overhauled the app as part of iOS 27’s broader AI push, giving it stronger image generation and fewer of the old limits. Generated images can now land at the exact dimensions an iPhone wallpaper needs.
You do not have to open Image Playground first. Go to Settings → Wallpaper → Add New Wallpaper, or long-press the Lock Screen and tap the + button. In the wallpaper gallery, Image Playground now appears in the top row. iOS 27 also drops AI-generated options into the Featured section, including stylized versions of photos already on your phone.
Christoffel said those suggestions needed no extra work in testing. Favorite photos came back as polished, wallpaper-ready images. Any AI wallpaper in the gallery carries Apple’s Image Playground icon, so the source stays obvious.Tap a suggestion and you can use it immediately. Tap Image Playground instead and you can describe a new image, pick a style, or start from an existing photo or person. When generation finishes, the result is already sized for the Lock Screen and Home Screen.
