“Samsung is greeting the arrival of the iPhone 5 with an ad that will run [Sunday] in certain national and local newspapers (how modern),” Chris Matyszczyk reports for CNET.’
“Clearly, it’s been hastily put together, but its headline — ‘It doesn’t take a genius’ — rather prepares you for what follows,” Matyszczyk reports.
“Samsung’s biggest problem isn’t that its phone doesn’t have some fine rational attributes. It’s that the brand hasn’t captured hearts,” Matyszczyk writes. “There are no lists nor self-help books that can tell you how to do that. That does, sometimes, take a little genius.”

Newspaper ads? LOL.
Haha – this should have been the MDN take.
Ome word says it all…
Separation.
Samsung: Works great on paper
Apple: Works great in reality;)
There was an article yesterday, explaining that the iphone 5 cost apple $167. That speaks volumes of the actual quality of the product! what do you think a cheap ass droid phone cost to manufacture? $20-$50 at the most. Paper don’t mean shit!
The only thing this does is make Samsung look really petty… Like a kid who got in trouble throwing a temper tantrum.. In business, when companies start running attack ads, it means they are terrified.. In marketing, it’s a last ditch effort to sway people..
The iPhone5 will sell more in the first week than samsung did of the S3 in its first month and a half… Maybe more.. and apple will do it euthyroid ever mentioning a single bit of the competition in their marketing.. They will just show the factors that set the iPhone apart..
I hope Samsung eats crow soon when they aren’t getting any more money from Apple. Rue the day they chose to battle apple as MDN has said
Talk about a counter productive ad. It would appeal only to dumb people. All the smart people see it for what it is, call thier kids scattered across America and tell them: “If I EVER see a Samsung product in your home or on your person, I’ll cut you out of my will.”
Do they really want to piss off people who can afford to buy something else!? Think bullseye on Michael Dells face…now replace that face with the Samdung Logo.
These ads could convince the judge that ShameDung phones need to be recalled!
4.0″ vs 4.8″ screen.
Bigger isn’t necessarily better. Ask Dr. Ruth :o)
Convienient how the iPhone screen is blank, while the Samsung is switched on.
At first glance I thought its because they just got their asses handed to them for trade dress infringement. But regardless of that, the iPhone looks bad ass when it’s on.
They should have just showed the back of the iPhone. Oh wait, to borrow a quote from Steve Jobs… “The back of our computers look better than the front of anyone else’s”.
1. Pixel density is what matters for resolution. The Samsung has less pixcel density 306 per sq inch to the iPhones 326 per sq inch.
2. Anyone can put a bigger battery in a clunky brick like the S3. Try to get 8 hours in a form factor that we want to put in our pockets.
3. Tight coupling of iOS with A6 beats all of 4 core 2GB RAM advantages that Sammy might get.
4. Most of the rest is just different ways of doing something that Apple does better……eg. Pinch to zoom, passbook, etc.
Oddly enough, my friend bought a Samsung Galaxy S3 from iPhone 4S and loves it. I can’t believe how amazing it truly is… It came out in May and has better specs than the dated iPhone 5 on arrival… LOL
iShame. iSheep.
The Ad is directed at the technically challenged. None of those bullet points beat the iPhone 5…….if you really stop and analyze them one by one.
Bigger screen? What are you….a gorilla?
Wow, the ad really smacks of desperation. The iPhone’s popularity isn’t about having the most earth-shattering raw hardware specs — it’s about peerless ease-of-use, the seamless integration of hardware with the best OS, timely OS updates, a huge selection of apps and, of course, great and appealing design.
They left two of the most important things to me off the iPhone list. One handed operation, and if fits in my pocket.
You folks just kill me. I use both and I suggest that you need to live this experience failing which you are ill equipped to speak intelligently about either OS platform or device. The S3 fits great is a pocket, and one handed is a non issue as the OS offers you a tweak that suits one handed users (left or right handed). Samsung incorporates NFC in the battery and does all kinds of great things none of which is worth a hill of beans to iSheeps and that is understood and respected.
All this to say, that while not an iSheep, I do prefer the Apple user experience as the eco system is unmatched and that is just a fact. This Ad is clearly not going to get traction with iSheeps but it could have traction in helping Samsung maintain the incredible momentum that the S3 is enjoying around the World.
I can see Samsung’s next ad . . .
“Apple admits they were wrong all along about their original earbuds, scrambles to fix their flawed design!”
I wonder why Samsung left “Free Malware” off the list on their side?
The image is too fuzzy to read the long list of Samsung uniqueness — those of you who can read it, is it a list of exploits available to criminal organizations targeting Android users?
Everything else aside, doesn’t ’tilt to zoom’ sound like an awkward prospect at best?
Nice feature.
Hey look everyone! IT’S “Pat”! BWAHAHAHAHA! Troll us some more little one. 😆
Pat’s a moron
the other day he criticized Apple in a LONG post about apple manufacturing in China while Praising Samsung without realizing that samsung manufactures in China and has been cited for ABUSING children…
http://gizmodo.com/5932504/report-underage-child-workers-abused-in-samsung-factories
BWAHAHA him is right, he’s one of the most clueless duds around.
When comparing Apps available, besides the fact that Android versions are often inferior and late to arrive, Does anyone know just how many of those Android apps are just porn? I remember that Apple kicked out many thousands of porn apps, but Android didn’t announce the same. I wonder how the non-porn count compares to Apples.
Bingo! Device wars aside as the iPhone 5 is still a Samsung phone dressed in Apple wear. The bottom line is that Android cannot even come close to Apple in terms of the eco system. Apple’s biggest threat on the eco system front will be Microsoft and NOT Android.
All I can say is: LOL Newspaper. That sums the whole thing up. Newspaper. Newspaper. Newspaper. Newspaper. Newspaper. Newspaper. Newspaper. Newspaper. Newspaper. Newspaper. Did I mention that their retaliation from being way way behind yet again was to advertise in a Newspaper.
This issue of advertising in the newspaper; It seems to me that it must be relatively cheap to advertise in a newspaper today given that readership is way down over the last several years. Having advertised in the newspaper (and saved some money doing so), if that ad is picked up by ever website that deals with this kind of stuff and posted for free, then who was smart to advertise in the newspaper? I’m just saying…
What’s funny is the list of “extra items” just look gimmicky and stupid. It would be great Apple responded by extending ad with a huge list of items for the iPhone, then added a quote like “there, we finished it for you”.
Unfortunately many consumers and pundits are not “geniuses”- they’re idiots. Life is too short. I’ll just ignore this one, too.
Ashton Kutcher. He’s a big Apple fan and might be a big marketing ace.
ScamDung needs to go ‘Gangnam Style’ – in terms of coming up with something unique for the first time in its history. Actually, that video kind of exemplifies the silliness of their marketing mantra: juvenile, derivative, saccharine, and vacuous.
That’s just….bizarre. I mean, short of 14 year-old fanboys, who the Hell cares either way about specs?
It doesn’t take a genius
There are no geniuses at Samsung, obviously. If this desperately moronic ad is the only way Samsung believe they can compete with Apple, all I can do is point at them and laugh.
Seriously Samsung. If acting like little babies with pouting baby ads in the market place is the best you can do, why bother? You know EXACTLY what kind of customers you’re going to get from Lure-In-The-Suckers ads like this, and you’re welcome to them! Take them! They get what they deserve. You.
Oh and a special middle-finger salute to the new crop of Samsung-Paid-Trolls, whoever you are behind the anonymous coward nicks. Expect to be eviscerated here at MDN. We look forward to it. 😆
Is the headline of the ad referring to Apple’s latest commercials? I do agree that the commercials sent the wrong message about needing a genius to help solve every problem you will encounter with Apple. I thought that aspect of this ad was clever and deserved. Obviously the rest of the ad is not an accurate comparison.
