Longtime Microsoft Windows developer switches to Apple Mac

“I have been a Windows user and software developer since 1992, and a DOS user and developer since 1984. I used to hate Macs and as recently as 9 months ago my avatar on one of my forums was John Hodgman (the PC guy from the Mac ads),” David Alison blogs. “Now I really enjoy using my Mac and am drifting away from Windows as a platform.”

Here’s why:

• User Interface: Clean and uncluttered.

• Performance: After two months with my MacBook I have not had a single problem with this aspect of the machine.

• Compatibility: I can use [VMWare’s Fusion’s] Unity mode and have Windows applications share the desktop with my Mac applications.

• Portability: This MacBook provides the perfect balance for me.

• Software Availability: The range of applications is staggering and covers just about any category I could think of.

Alison explains, “After two months I still find the machine fascinating. I don’t hate my Windows XP machine, nor the Vista laptop or Ubuntu workstation I also have at my desk. I just don’t use them all that much anymore.”

  1. What I really liked about in David’s blog is that ALL of
the replies were supportive, encouraging and helpful.

There wasn’t a single flame last time I looked. Maybe Zune Tang and Afib are the only windows fanbois left on the planet and they just have to hang out here to feel needed.

    Just a thought.

  2. The switch makes all the sense in the world to me. Especially since the guy said he programmed in DOS. M$ totally screwed the pooch when the made the command line obsolete.

    Just my $0.02

  3. re: innhitman

It sound to me like a severe lack of knowledge to me.

I know the people at Best Buy arent genius’s but before coming out with that crap they could have just gone to Apple.com and find that information out instantly.

As yes, I think they get more commission flogging WIndowz than Macs and add the ignorance to the mix and you get the ‘amazing’ store experience of best Buy.

Glad you stuck to your guns and bought your MBA though – If they had talked to me like that I would have thrown the mac at them and told them to fuck off and I would have bought the gear from the nearest Apple Store.

  4. “Another quitter”, ZungTang

And this is a surprise how? At least you have come to the same conclusion as the rest of us…ANOTHER QUITTER from Windows. Get used to it, it’s only the start.

  5. …long established comfort zone?

…attitudes based on fear, uncertainty and doubt?

…ignorance is contagious and spreads trepidation to the front lines?

Sounds like MAC lemmings to me. Fear and ignorance are the tools Apple fanbois use to lure the weak into their cult. Common falsehoods to draw them in are “malware took my Windows machine down last weekend”, “Windows machines are ugly and the OS is a mess” and “you get what you pay for”. Whatever.

Once hooked MAC sheep develop a heightened sense of smugness and pretension—so acute that they’re blind to “real world” computing with the “viruses? I don’t know what you’re talking about”, “everything is easy” or “everything just works” mantra from MAC fanbois. Think different, MAC dorks. If it sounds too good to be true, it is.

Really? I thought it was because of industry experts calling out Windows for what it is:

PC’s are susceptible to viruses, malware, and they are forced to use DRM-riddled software being sold by an orangutang in a business suit? It’s too good to be true!

  7. Jason Snell, Editor of MacWorld Magazine, in the latest issue says: “The reason Microsoft’s founders are among the richest people in the world is that the company’s products, including Windows and Office, are like public utilities. Practically everyone uses them.”

Well, I agree that practically everyone uses them, but do you really think that’s the real reason why MS founders are the “richest”? And are these products really public utilities? I think the real answer to both questions is worth contemplating when buying into a computing platform for personal use, and much more so when contemplating what an entire company is going to rest it’s computing needs on.

Mr. Alison is only one of many millions that once again demonstrates that you simply do not have to use Windows – at home or at work. Enterprise infrastructures simply do not have to build their computing platform on MS products – period. The truth is that no one actually must use MS products, including WIndows and Office. We’ve simply talked ourselves into an imaginary position that doesn’t really exist outside of the rhetoric we’re feed by MS reps and their partners. And that’s a fact.

  8. “…you simply do not have to use Windows – at home or at work”

What the hell is Mr. Peabody is talking about? Hey smarty pants—if Microsoft disappeared off the face of the earth where would that leave us? That’s right. It would be a dark, cold and bleak existence.

Not using Microsoft products is like not breathing air. Do you suggest people stop using air too? Air happens to be in my comfort zone alongside food and water. You MAC dorks seem to think you can live on expensive and pretty little toys that can’t play games. Ridiculous.

  9. After bleating the virtues of OS X to my co-workers for nearly 5 years now, I got a call from one (who is well-known for being rather computer savvy and once was our IT guy) who finally reached his tipping point and wanted to know if the Mac Mini would be good enough for his needs. And once HE jumps, others will follow.

  10. “if Microsoft disappeared off the face of the earth where would that leave us? That’s right. It would be a dark, cold and bleak existence.”
As opposed to what Microsoft is doing to the world now?

“Do you suggest people stop using air too? Air happens to be in my comfort zone alongside food and water.”
So you DO live in a hamster cage!

“You MAC dorks seem to think you can live on expensive and pretty little toys that can’t play games. Ridiculous.”
*sigh* Oh the tough life we live! Having a powerful, stable OS with the ability to boot into the Dark Side if we feel the urge to play crappy Winblows games, or stay on the good sauce and play the Mac port. So how is that overheated, overpriced Alienware tower that you use to play your games on?
What? Speak up! We Mac users are playing the latest games on the consoles which cost a fraction of the loan that you took out to pay for that paperweight you call a PC.

    Your whining. Our laughter.™

  11. @ innhitman
It’s a overviewed and planned sales statement, otherwise they would have asked you if you would like to buy an external Superdrive. SCAM and typical of Best Buy…it was the same at COMPUSA, and we all know where they went.
It’s a shame that most people would be not informed and believe them. Years ago, I would go into COMPUSA and make all the OS 9 computers say “COMP USA Employees SUCK” when a dailog box came up. Their “megahertz” emphasized PC boxes couldn’t do that, and none of them have jobs there now.

  12. @innhitman…

There’s a much simpler explanation. Best Buy/Geek Squad make *much* more money on support for crappy Windows machines than they ever will on a Mac. Macbook Air is selling quite well; satisfied customers buy them and then never return to Best Buy. If you buy a Windows laptop they know you’ll be back inside 30 days to have them fix something, at which point they can charge you $50/hour.

The “no DVD drive” argument is just an acceptable smoke screen to hide their true intentions.

  13. “…you simply do not have to use Windows – at home or at work”

What Mr. Peabody is talking about is the truth. Hey friend — if Microsoft disappeared off the face of the earth where would that leave us? That’s right. It would be a bright, warm and wonderful existence.

Not using Apple products is like not breathing air. Do you suggest people stop using air too? Air happens to be in my comfort zone alongside food and water. You windoze dorks seem to think you can live on cheap and ugly little boxes that can play games, but have many problems like viruses and crashes. If you really want to play games, get a console! Ridiculous.

  14. • Software Availability: The range of applications is staggering and covers just about any category I could think of.

Unless of course you’re in to the market in which case you’re screwed without Paralles or Fusion.

Intuit’s Quicken for Mac is a terrible application too.

Don’t get me wrong. I’ll put up with all of it to keep from going back to Windoze but I’d like to point out that improvements to the software availability could be made.
