U.S. News & World Report: Apple Macs are attractive, stable, secure, and more fun than Windows
Wednesday, May 16, 2007 - 12:22 AM EDT

Apple StoreFor PC users who don't want to upgrade to Microsoft's Windows Vista, U.S. News & World Report's David LaGesse offers alternatives like sticking with Windows XP or trying Linux or the best alternative by far:

Buy a Macintosh: Apple's computers are attractive, stable, and secure–and more fun than Windows. Macs can handle all of the Internet, audio, and video functions that most families need, though some games and other software are not available. While they appear more expensive than comparable PCs, Macs can be cheaper than a computer that's properly outfitted to run Windows Vista. One more bonus: If you must, you can run Windows on your Mac with programs like Parallels.

Full article here.

[Thanks to MacDailyNews Reader "Matson" for the heads up.]

MacDailyNews Take: Those that take LaGesse's advice to buy a Macintosh will be very, very happy personal computer users.

Trying to convince some of my family members of the above is like pulling teeth. They'll eventually come around, but not after many frustrating hours wasted dealing with their computer woes.

When the mass-market media starts saying "get a Mac," the mass-market will at least consider getting a Mac. That's all Apple needs, fair consideration as an alternative to the el-cheapo Windows Vista PC from Dell, HP, Gateway, etc. Once consideration is given, it's obvious that many users actually buy at Mac. That's the big difference. Before, most consumers were aware that Macs existed, but never considered it a viable choice. Now, they consider it and often buy it. What a difference...!

@ yep & me:

Perhaps when you find that you can use Macs properly, your grammer will improve as well.

Is it any wonder PC's have such a bad press!

Individuals who work as IT consultants should not be allowed anywhere near computers until they are able to communicate with intelligence!!

May 16, 07 - 03:19 am Comment from: Me....

10% market share, here we come!

May 16, 07 - 03:59 am Comment from: Walter Chillum

nsapap,

Be patient dude (dudette?), it took me five years to get my sister to switch and she's doing fine with her emac. Just keep at it and they may eventually come around.

The way I did it was that every time my sister rang me up with her latest windows' woe I kept telling her I couldn't really help her unless she went over to macs and eventually she did the switch.

I suggest you give a date to your family after which they have a choice: switch to macs and you'll help them (tech assistance) or they stay with windows and they have to pay to fix the mal/spy/etc./ware on their computer(s). I guess you could call it the apple and the stick! Sorry bad pun.

"History teaches us that men and nations behave wisely once they have exhausted all other alternatives." ~ Abba Eban

Now that people have discovered the problems with the alternatives, they are starting to behave wisely and switch to Macs.

Sadly they need to make the mistakes for themselves, try and patch things up and eventually discover that it doesn't have to be like that, but they get there in the end.

Most of them only chose PCs by following the herd. Some of the herd leaders are now going in a different direction.

My favorite quote to potential "switchers" and friends that are Windows Users:

"This all ends when you say it does."

It applies perfectly don't you think to the Windows experience?

I think so too!

It's "grammar", people, not "grammer".

May 16, 07 - 09:01 am Comment from: Galloway

MW Magic Word = per, as in people are being per-snickety about grammar today. Although the next time I see someone use "loose" when they meant "lose" I'm going to loose... er, lose it! :-0

Kelsey says it's Grammer.

Cheers, Seattle.

May 16, 07 - 10:09 am Comment from: @Me

So you think typing fast and having fun excuses your bad spelling and even worse grammar.
If English were not your first language, I could understand.

But otherwise, suffice it to say that reading your posts is NOT fun!

May 16, 07 - 11:23 am Comment from: GranitW

Could it be that Apple's stock fell to 107 and will jump to 145 really? Can't wait...

May 16, 07 - 05:28 pm Comment from: Crabapple

@Chris Thank you for the reality check! It is Grammar people, I stand corrected, just as a cheque is indeed a cheque and not check!:-) ( Okay, I am being a bit naughty now! notice I said okay and not O.K!! )

As for Me, what is Warcraft? is it something doubleya plays? I am now off to eat a pizza well away from this electronic equipment.

As for keeping my cool, I find it annoying that people who should know better i.e IT should actually know better!.

The reason their aren't many IT people in business's where Macs are used more than Pc's is because those business's find they can live happily without costly IT personnel!

Graphic Artists, Advertising agencies, Printers, Publishers, Photographers and media producing business's have always used Macs even in the dark days when Mr. S J was not there.

Macs have been in the business environment since they were first made.

Pc's started in programmers department mostly for file and record storage. Then to accounts management and then to shops, before the advent of the Apple Mackintosh.

The Mac interface was copied by M$ who then licenced it to Pc makers, who then marketed them for the home.

Games machines were mostly Amiga, Sinclair ZX and the BBC's Acorn. Those were the most famous, there were plenty that were being made by enthusiasts buying components from Radio Shack and Tandy.

I would expect you to have learnt the history of computing in its most basic sense so that if people come to you as an expert, you can provide them with a solution as well as knowledge.
Hence my Beef!

May 16, 07 - 05:40 pm Comment from: @ me & Yep from Crabapple

Could you both send me a cheque for $250.00 for the lesson! It cost me quite a bit to learn all that information and more!!

Before I now leave this site. It was mostly the advent of the ipod that encouraged the majority of people to buy the imac, macbook, etc for their own use at home.

Prior to that, Mac equipment was at use in the above mentioned as well as Schools, Colleges and Universities.

It has never been a profitable venture to be a mac IT consultant or an independent mac reseller or repairer.

That should tell you something and that is why you are a Pc consultant using a Mac for yourself.

Just a little wisdom you had not realised you needed.

May 17, 07 - 03:41 am Comment from: Awesome... Me :> crabbie
