iPhone dominates Android in smartphone loyalty

“Owners of iPhones like their handsets more than Android owners like theirs,” John Paczkowski reports for AllThingsD.

“That’s the gist of some new research from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) which just finished analyzing four quarters worth of smartphone platform loyalty surveys collected between July 2012 and June 2013,” Paczkowski reports. “According to CIRP’s data, 81 percent of existing iPhone users purchased another iPhone during the 12 month period surveyed. Meanwhile, 68 percent of existing Android smartphone users bought another Android device.”

Paczkowski reports, “During the period CIRP surveyed, nearly three times as many Android handset users switched to iPhone as iPhone users switched to Android. Between July 2012 and June 2013, iPhone poached 20 percent of its users from Android, while Android captured just seven percent of its users from iPhone.”

  1. The problem is….. It is not blind loyalty…….. Its just a better product. All the anal…yst and bs bloggers get it wrong. Don’t know if it is blindness, lack of brains, of lack of morals…

    But they keep getting it wrong. Must be a monday. LOL

  2. There’s another angle to this as well : Apple makes high quality products that last. As a micro-publisher, I use my 4-5 year old Mac Mini with Snow Leopard (and Adobe CS3) with no problems, and little or no need to upgrade. On the move, I have my iPhone 3GS with iOS6.x and my iPad1 with iOS5.x, and they’re nowhere near needing to be replaced—perhaps in a few years time.

    I doubt the same wold be true if I had some shoddy items from Dell or Samsung.

  3. Android device users are usually looking for the most bang for the buck. Usually, the cheaper device wins by default. Because there are so many different brands of Android devices available, there’s not much point in a consumer sticking to one brand. Whatever the hot item of the month is, they’ll just buy that brand.

    I’ve never shopped that way. Whenever I find a reliable brand, I blindly stick with it as long as it continues to satisfy me. Price never enters the picture. I’m probably not what you might call a diligent shopper. After I got my first Apple Mac 128, I never, ever considered buying another brand, so it’s approaching almost 30 years of non-stop Apple. I’d definitely be considered a loyal Apple customer. I’d say I got my money’s worth because they all lasted a long time pretty much trouble-free. None of them ever stopped working but some became too slow after I upgraded the OS, so I just bought a newer and faster model.

    My current 2009 iMac 24″ 3.06 GHz has been running 24/7 since I bought it (I only restart it for upgrades). I tried running Mountain Lion on it but it was too slow, so I’ll continue running it with Snow Leopard until it dies. It’s been perfectly reliable and that’s what I’m looking for. I’ll trade extra speed for reliability.

  4. During the classic “Windows vs. Mac” era, Windows users had a tendency to hate their machines. Windows was tolerated, never loved. And yet, these folks wouldn’t think of switching to Mac, because they couldn’t conceive of actually liking and enjoying their computers. Instead, they stuck with Windows, stayed miserable, and were convinced that Mac users were weirdos for loving their machines.

    I wonder if some of these Android users are the same way. They’re not excited by their phones, but somehow can’t conceive that an iPhone would be different.

  5. Yup, two people in my office are dumping their droids as soon is the next iPhone is released. They want to get the 4S for the big discount. Even though they’re not going for the latest most expensive iPhone, they are sick of android.
