Apple is reducing the daily budgets employees can spend on artificial intelligence tools as part of a cost-cutting push, even as the company continues to place AI at the center of its operations, according to Bloomberg News‘ Mark Gurman.
Last month, Apple quietly lowered the daily spending cap for some engineers using AI models to $200 from $300, people with knowledge of the change told Bloomberg. The company is now planning additional reductions for certain engineering teams that could bring their daily allowances down to as little as $100.
Other groups of employees face the prospect of still tighter limits, with daily caps potentially dropping as low as $25, Gurman reported. Many non-engineering staff already operate under a $100 daily ceiling, while some workers are permitted to exceed the standard allowances based on the nature of their roles. The budgets apply to the cost of input and output tokens consumed by the AI models.
The reductions form part of a broader efficiency drive at Apple under new CEO John Ternus, who has focused on streamlining operations and reducing management layers. The moves come as other technology companies have also imposed restrictions on internal AI usage, with Tesla setting weekly limits around $200 and Uber capping individual developer spending on AI coding tools at $1,500 per month.
