Bill Gates: Apple may have to make a Surface-like device

“Now that he’s in his 50s, Bill Gates is still fanatical — fanatical about Microsoft’s new tablet/PC thingy known as the Surface, a device he believes Apple may have to follow,” Chris Matyszczyk reports for CNET.

“Gates described how his goal with Microsoft had been to deliver ‘the magic of software to people both in their work and in their home,'” Matyszczyk reports. “Surface, he insisted, is a new form factor. He called it ‘exciting.’ (He subsequently got even more excited about that excitement.) ‘You don’t have to make a compromise. You can have everything you like about a tablet and everything you like about a PC all in one device. And so that should change the way people look at things.'”

Matyszczyk reports, “How come, though, pressed [interviewer Charlie] Rose, Jobs was able to cross the tablet threshold and Gates wasn’t? ‘He did some things better than I did,’ admitted Microsoft’s co-founder.”

MacDailyNews Take: Besides banking cash, something at which he was no slouch but didn’t much care about, either, Steve Jobs did everything better than the increasingly delusional Gates.

  1. Give the man a break, guys. All his money is tied up in Microsoft shares, and Ballmer has halved their value. OF COURSE he is going to talk this thing up. Now excuse my while I revert to hysterical laughter.

  2. Some people refuse to not have a keyboard; I work with many of them. They are certain that a keyboard on a screen cannot work, so they buy Droids and devices such as Surfaces. Once they try virtual keyboards, they find that they are quite usable; however, by then it is too late: they already own the other product.

Besides, it is uncool for an IT techie (myself and those I am describing) to use an Apple product. Fortunately for me, I don’t particularly care if I am regarded as cool or not. I just like products that work: Apple does, Microsoft does not.

  3. Apple was just the first to put the components together at the critical time, but like Steve Job said it is not about the hardware but the software. Osx based on unix is scalable without the os falling, so Apple was able to get the ios to the magical slate first. The genius was to to create a marketplace and get develeopers onboard. This was successful and was taken to market years ahead of any compeditor. There will always be someone that will not buy Apple hell I use thier products but find dealing with the company like negotiating (not) with a mix of nickolodeon and the SS and fear thier 1984 advert is about Apple enslaving
the world not freeing it. Humans a virus self perpetuated.

Ps. Apple please design the new Mac Pro with tooless removable hard drive bays.

  4. Man.. Gates must have delusion of grandeur! Or lives in his own shut in world. AKA Zanadu. Soon he will be mumbling Rosebud… or in his case Surface…

Hum… Or could be he had a BSOD ( Brain Screen of Death ) and needs a reboot.

I have two iPads a #1 & #3. Uses them at a convention last weekend. Did not have time to pack up a computer to take with me. But worked out well using the iPad’s ^_^

  5. I noticed no talk about battery life. Also kicks ass that they have ports at seemingly random spots along the side of the thing. It’ll look great with stuff plugged into the side of the screen while using your keyboard.

  6. In one of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation conference room…

Melinda Gates: ” O O.. Keep it going Bill.. It feels good”
Bill Gates: ” I am hot plugging my “USB device” as hard as I can into your ‘Surface”s ports”
    Melinda Gates: “Don’t stop Bill.. O… ”
Bill Gates: “Sorry honey… I cann’t do it no more…, my “Battery” run out”
Melinda Gates: ” Don’t you dare to ‘Zune’ on me… I have the best ‘Surface’ ever!!”
Bill Gates: ” Sorry Melinda… I need to ‘Ctrl’ ‘Alt’ ‘Del’ myself…”
Melinda Gates: “C’Mon Bill… You BSOD on me again…Your “kernel’ sucks!!”
Melinda Gates: “Can you perform like iPad… it keep going, going, and going… I heard it can last up to 10 hours…”
Bill Gates: “Who care about iPad… I prefer your ‘Surface'”
Melinda Gates: “Does it f**king matter now? Your ‘Zune’ or ‘Kin’-like equipment die faster than ‘WebOS’ – f**king useless!!”
    🙂
