Apple Board Member Al Gore campaigns for Oscar for Apple Keynote-based documentary

“Al Gore is waging a fierce campaign for recognition and an Oscar statuette for his global warning documentary, while reviving talk that he’s pursuing a bigger prize: the presidency,” Beth Fouhy reports for Forbes.

“This Saturday Gore is hosting a network of 1,600 house parties across the country to watch and discuss his documentary, ‘An Inconvenient Truth,’ with the Democrat planning to address the gatherings by satellite hookup. The movie is on the short list of feature-length documentaries being considered for Oscar nominations,” Fouhy reports. “The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announce the Oscar nominations Jan. 23, with the 79th Oscars slated for Feb. 25.”

“‘I am not planning to run for president again,’ Gore said last week, arguing that his focus is raising public awareness about global warming and its dire effects. Then, he added: ‘I haven’t completely ruled it out,'” Fouhy reports. “Those words make Gore the 800-pound non-candidate of the Democratic field.”

Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth,” the highest-grossing documentary of the year, features copious use of Apple’s Keynote presentation software, even while many reviewers of the film incorrectly describe it as a “PowerPoint” presentation.

  1. @ mAc-warrior: “… the temperature of the Earth is well below the established 3000 year average, and the temperature has been much higher than it currently is now, with no ill effects.”

Unless you had weather stations set up 3000 years ago, it is physically impossible to know with any certainty what the temperature of the Earth was then. Our measurements come from such measurments that have been taken going back to the 1800s, and they all indicate a warming trend, post-industrial revolution.

McGherkinstein Jones has also done us a service by getting rid of the political BS, by pointing out that it is our activities that have created measurable changes in the level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere in that same time frame. 2x as much in the last 60 years, compared to knowable levels over the last 600,000. More gases=more heat. More heat=climate change. Climate change=changes in everything from the way we grow food, to where we can live economically. Changes like that, on a global scale, can’t help but at least cost more lives & money than would otherwise happen, as we struggle to deal with it. And of course, the worse case scenario – which no one can rule out with any certainty – is that the changes will be so bad that we, as a species, wind up trying to eak out a living from a planet that no longer is environmentally capable in accomodating us on a wide scale.

That last point alludes to a very large point that’s missed in this discussion – global warming is not about ‘hurting the Earth’. The Earth couldn’t give a flying f*ck about how hot it gets. The Earth will still be here. The problem is what the effect will do to US – the humans.

Now, is the worse case scenario definitely what is going to happpen? How the hell should I know. Does the evidence thus far indicate we are going down that general road? Yes. Will the Earth care one way or another whether it happens? No. And whatever the Earth/Mother Nature does to adjust, there is no gaurantee that it will be beneficial to us – it could just as well facilitate the Rise of the Cockroaches or the Return of the Dinosaurs or something completely different.

So, given the possible consequences of the path that available evidence indicates we are on, would we be supremely stupid not to take preventative measures (especially when all of these measures will also make us more economically efficient AND politically secure) to preserve some semblance of what we know is an environment conducive to our comfortable existence? Uh … duh. Out of a basic sense of self-preservation, it makes no sense not to! Only an utter and complete idiot wouldn’t take action to preserve the good things they have.

But, as many of the posts on this site show in no uncertain terms, certain vocal elements of the conservative movement in America are just that; utter and complete idiots.

I for one am happy to see that the majority of Americans are finally waking up to that fact.

  2. “Our measurements come from such measurments that have been taken going back to the 1800s, and they all indicate a warming trend, post-industrial revolution.” should read:

“Our best info today comes from such measurments that have been taken going back to the 1800s, and they all indicate a warming trend, post-industrial revolution.”

  3. @ SimpleMath-

“…Do you think that people that strap bombs to themselves and blow other people up, or fly airplanes into buildings aren’t “evil-doers or” “suiciders”?…”

Sure I do! (But, if I were President of the USA, I might try to speak in less of a sophmoric way, wouldn’t you?) As I stated before, to make the stretch from Sunni vs. Shiite in the Iraq CivilWar=terrorists,
I don’t see it. That is an internal struggle- they are using IEDs against our troops because they resent (right or wrong) the “infidel” prescence. Same reason Osamo (remember him, the guy WHO ATTACKED US?) gave. I Report. You Decide.

“…You come on here freaking out about how theories of Global Warming are going to destroy us, yet downplay suicide bombers that we KNOW are killing people. Last I checked suicide bombers have killed far more people than global warming…”

I’m FREAKING OUT? No, sounds like YOU are, a little now. Surprising, because up until this point, I thought you were one of the more intelligent conservative posters.
(I realize I am infammatory. I used to be civil. The “other side”, usually dished it out. After awhile I got tired of it because of A) the amount of BS B) the thin skin of those who dish it out but can’t take it.)

“…Why is it you expect everybody to change our lifestyles to stop the potential global warming, yet when we do anything to stop terrorists, you criticize it. If life is so important to you, perhaps you should support efforts that are trying to stop deaths that are happening now…”

No, I WANT to stop the taerrorists. Al Quada and Taliban are in AFGHANISTAN.
Let’s go get ’em!!!! (I mean it).

  4. Yes, mAc-a warrior-
    don’t bother to repond.

    Those two are bullshit, too.

    ODYSSEY67-

“…McGherkinstein Jones has also done us a service by getting rid of the political BS…”.

Thank you. (I mean that, even though probably seems funny, coming fromn ME!).

  5. Simple Math-

“…Wow, that’s clever. What does religion have to do with this discussion? Why is he a whacko? because you say so? Based on your “fairy Tale” and “Mormon” comments, I guess your a secularist. I guess that explains why you think it’s OK that terrorist are killing people…”

The founder of that “Institute” seems to be theologically challenged. A survivalist nut. Google him.
    I am NOT a secularist.
I think it’s OK that terrorist are killing people?

    “…WHO NEEDS SCIENCE, FACTS, ETC.
And in your case, who needs facts at all. It’s much easier to call people a “Chimp” a “religious whacko” isn’t it?

I have presented facts, and references. Plus, don’t forget. I am Always Right. (It’s uncanny).
The only person I have called Chimp is G.W. aka, George The Chimp (TM).

  6. I’m Australian, so my comment is neutral as an outside observer.

You idiots are quoting bullshit at each other, with no attempt at obtaining facts or quoting from substantiated evidence.

You’re beating your dicks at each other, trying to make that slapping sound bigger than each other, but you end up smacking and pulverising yourselves.

Both sides, Democratic and Republicans… you’re FUCKING STUPID. Stop regurgitating what you think you know, and GO FIND OUT!

  7. …Sung to the theme from “The Beverly Hillbillies”…

    Terrific parsing.

…Obviously we are responsible for the number of cows on the planet aren’t we?

A very large amount of biomass is being converted into beefburgers, yes, to feed the very large apetites of a very large population.

…I guess you must also love the republican congress that worked with Clinton as well?…

What the republicans through their cronies and right wing press did to Clinton should go down in history as one of the largest ever character assasination attempts against a U.S. president. Needless to say, despite all the illegal activities by Ken-the-Starr – the nightly leaks of outright lies (beats me why Ken wudn’t thrown in jail) – Clinton’s popularity kept climbing.

…The fact that the country did well while he was in office is not memorable….

    That is a rather unperceptive.

…You’re beating your dicks at each other, trying to make that slapping sound bigger than each other…

Take your fetishes elsewhere. May I suggest you toss a couple of prawns on the barbie along with your sausage or wank yourself to sleep. BTW, have you come up with a solution other than “purposely ignore” the poor aussie airforce kids ordered to crawled into the toxic fuel tanks of your F-111s and have been suffering ever since?

As for global warming, I’m bothered by Gore’s failure to consider what percent of all greenhouse gasses is CO2. Whatever…. A global weather crisis might just be what humanity needs to head off extinction, assuming it’s survivable.

  8. Steve, one word of caution for you. Step- AWAY- from the stingrays.

Really, my entries C & P’d from wikipedia are not substantiated?
    WSJ? No?

    Whaddya’ want, a friggin’ affadavit?

And what is this, some sort of Aussie sport, dick-slapping?

Really, did you read your post?
    You must be proud!
All of Australia is proud of you, mate!

  9. “Oh, yeah, let the misinformation begin. Maybe some clarification will help. Probably not.

Every Florida recount done after the election showed Bush won. It was a Federal election, the Florida Supreme Court has no jurisdiction. Get over it.”

1- There has never been a Federal Election. Each state/commonwealth has the right to choose it’s electors by it’s own laws and methods as long as they do not violate the US Constitution. As long as a state does not prohibit someone’s civil rights, etc., the Feds have NOTHING to say about what or how a state chooses it’s electors.

2- The recount of all Florida votes showed that Bush lost. It was buried deep in the bowels of the papers. Accusations go on page 1, corrections on p45.

3- If the State of Florida could not be decided in a timely matter, the issue was supposed to go to the US House of Representatives. It was not.

Bush was appointed President by a Supreme Court illegally by the very people charged with upholding and protecting the Constitution. Most importantly, the interloping in a state issue was supported by the ‘Conservatives’. That’s the way of the Neo-Con. Spout state’s rights until it’s not convenient.

  10. “The founder of that “Institute” seems to be theologically challenged. A survivalist nut. Google him.”

Who are you speaking of? Joseph Smith? He was a farmer from Vermont/New York.. Even if he was a ‘survivalist’, so was John the Baptist, what’s your point?

    “I am NOT a secularist.”
Well, you have no problem attacking the Bible as “fairy Tales” and calling the Massachusettes Governor a religious whacko. This leads me to believe you were probably not at the last Billy Graham revival.

  11. The childish behavior that abounds in this thread is an embarrassment to MDN. I simply wanted to present an alternate viewpoint that I have read about in numerous sources. I think it’s worth debating, but I will not continue with the level of immaturity that is present here.

To everyone’s friend “Always Right”: You can just go on thinking that you’re “Always Right”. Maybe you are, and maybe you aren’t. Maybe you should consider that there might not be a “Right”, in all cases. But your immaturity and bigotry shows a level of insecurity rivaled by few here. Childish insults are not the way to garner respect and admiration from others. Someday, perhaps, you’ll learn that those two things are more important than being “Always Right”. Maybe if you reach the tenth grade you’ll realize that.

I will not even address your theological insults. You have no idea what faith I hold. I’m done with this.

  12. You are worse than excrement and you are dead wrong about what happened in that election. You are totally full of it. Bush won fair and square and you mentally challenged, poor losers, threaten lawsuits all over the place. Notice how the Republicans are filing lawsuits all over the place. You libs are SICK!

  13. http://www.junkscience.com/

Al Gore is full of shit about CO2 being the main cause of global warming.

CO2 has little impact on the Earth’s temperature. Variation in solar radiance, the Earth’s longterm orbit, the effect of cosmic rays on cloud formation, etc. all have more impact on the Earth’s temperature than CO2.

The longterm climate models are completely broken and can’t predict the climate next year much less 100 years from now.

Chicken Little Gore is scaring people for his own political purpose, nothing more.

Thank the merciful God that George W. Bush won the election and saved us from the lunatic Al Gore. Only a fool would want this idiot as President.
