“Microsoft Corp.’s long-awaited release of the upgrade to its flagship Windows operating system will likely be delayed again by at least three months, research group Gartner Inc. said on Tuesday,’ Reuters reports. “The research note, released to clients on Monday, said the new Windows Vista operating system is too complex to be able to meet Microsoft’s targeted November release for volume license customers and January launch for retail consumers.”
“Gartner targets a Windows Vista release in the April-June quarter of 2007, nine to 12 months after Microsoft conducts a second major test, or ‘beta,’ release for Vista during the current quarter. ‘Microsoft still wants to get it out as soon as possible, but slipping from January to March is nowhere near as bad as slipping from shipping before the holidays to after the holidays,’ a group of Gartner analysts wrote in the report,” Reuters reports. “A Microsoft spokeswoman said the company disagreed with the Gartner report and it was still on track to meet its launch dates.”

With the credibility of Microsoft’s “reports” of Longhorn and Vista releases at near zero percent, I suppose that one must look elsewhere for more objective, balanced, and fair analysis.
The biggest software company in the world, with billions of $, they spend 100s millions on R+D (?), employ hundreds of IT consultants/enginners and yet – THEY CAN’T EVEN WRITE AN OPERATING SYSTEM!
OMG – If I ran Microsoft I would “sell the company and give the shareholders their money back”
Imagine what incredible things Apple could do with all those resources!!
The funny thing is, even if/when VISTA is finally released, it will run faster on Mac Hardware then deciated windows boxes.
Imagine what all the hardware suppliers (DELL etc all) are thinking now… “yet another year now with no new hardware to sell VISTA – why are we partnering with Microsoft anyway?. Let’s do a deal with Apple instead”.

You can bet that APPLE will patent EVERY new feature in Leopard.
Microsoft won’t be able to copy any of the new features.
I’ll bet Vista will ship right after the next Photoshop upgrade for the Mac.
Of course, while we all sit here and gloat, its possible, just possible, that MS is actually going to release a good product. I know I know, its not likely, but it is possible.
Given the way things are going at Microsoft, based on the information that is widely available, I have to surmise that it is not possible for M$ to turn out a good product. They are the T Rex of their world. The only problem is that their world is changing.

Death of Longhorn. Evisceration of Vista. Repeated delays. Origami busted. IE losing relevance. Threats of dismissal by Ballmer. Declining moral in Redmond. Yup, the Microsoft machine is hitting on all cylinders. Would you care to quantify your assessment?
Just for the record, I don’t hate Microsoft -but I have a hell of a time making fun of it!
But this is an actual suggestion for them, for the new Windows:
1. The new Windows should adopt a new kernel, based on UNIX. Hell will freeze before they adopt a Linux kernel, but they might be able to acquire or use some BSD kernel, or buy a company with a commercial UNIX – Silicon Graphics is pretty cheap right now, as well as the crooks from SCO- and adapt it
2. Either base the new GUI on X or build their own proprietary GUI over the new kernel. Actually, a new GUI platform could avoid their apps to run natively on, for example, Linux, so strategically, they would have to build a proprietary graphics shell.
3. Use their virtualization technology to run legacy Windows apps on its own memory space, so viruses, spyware, etc doesn’t contaminate the new kernel – like Apple did with “Classic Mode”.
I mean, beyond the bashing, wouldn’t this be a reasonable move? Worked great for Apple!
