I might be more articulate than most, but the 51% who voted for Bush are not mostly uninformed neo-con religious Rush loving hicks, as of course the losing side is not mainly America hating UN loving NPR addicted Mike Moore fans. Many of us would have voted for another Democrat (Lieberman in my case, and possibly Gephardt if his face didn’t get so red). Almost none of us, including the fresh faced excitable youth at the convention, think that Bush has done no wrong. And, I might add, neither does he think that.
I think most Republicans think that the basic domestic Democratic welfare plank, including jobs, health care, etc. is exactly right, and that improvements can be made. This country is far too rich not to be able to provide adequate levels of support for everyone in the country. (Not just citizens btw……..the 14th amendment is a must read). But we differ greatly on how to do that, and most Republicans do not trust government to allocate efficiently or wisely. There is the equivalent of the Air Force’s $10,000 coffee pot in every part of government, and the SEIU, NEA, and mail handlers union are great reminders that the point is the job, not the end result, especially since the goals of government assistance are qualitative and subject to infinite interpretation. But, Kerry also got more votes than any other successful candidate in history. the highest total of votes previously was Reagan in 84. Kerry received roughly 3 million more than reagan did.
Yes, this time bush won both the electoral college and the popular vote. Does this prove that he is right and everyone else is wrong? No, the nation is pretty evenly divided, more so really than it has been in a long time. I do believe that Bush made some choices after 9-11 that alienated a lot of people, americans and others alike. It is a shame. The commentator was comparing what the republicans promise in their family values speech during election season, with what was delivered. I can’t remember all of it, but the gist was this:
you were promised a ban on abortion. you got a war in iraq.
you were promised “no child left behind” you got a reduction in actual dollars to schools
you were promised a stronger economy. you got outsourced job tax breaks for corporations
you were promised prayer in school, you got tax cuts for the rich.
I found it interesting and a good point about what politicians say and what they actually do.
Same goes on the other side. I don’t feel like typing it out, but others have made mention of broken promises of the liberal/democrats.
Pagen Jim/Laff makes the error (by implication), common of those ignorant of the Bible, that evangelicals care less for their fellow man and more about ushering in the End Times:

This bigoted comment is not so much about the evangelical belief in the End Times as it is intended to impugn Bush policy regarding the middle east. Some who follow this imbecilic line of thinking occasionaly go so far as to say that President Bush is seeking to usher in the End Times with his war in Iraq. Setting aside that “conservative Christians” are more likely to be true Christ followers in word and deed than anyone else on the planet, let’s look at the twisted logic underlying the typical “End Times” thinking amongst secularists. A discussion on this very topic happened a few weeks ago on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher where guest David Cross stated condescendingly that Bush “takes the Bible literally”, and “he wants to fulfill Revelation” with his war on Muslims. Maher nodded approvingly while the crowd applauded approvingly.
Let’s look at this charge for a moment. Presumably, Cross and his like-minded anti-evangelical friends think that somehow, by America coming to its own (and Israel’s) defense in the middle east, Bush intends to preciptate the Second Coming. If this is the case, I submit that he is going about his prophesy-fulfilling efforts all wrong.
Charles Krauthammer recently presented the eminently logical theory that Kerry most likely had a secret plan for “bringing along the allies” to help with the war in Iraq in return for cutting Israel loose. Now, if I were a President who had the power to presumptuously rush the world toward the events depicted in the prophesies of Revelation, there would be no better way to do that than for me to abandon the Jews in Israel. Right now, we’re down to just a few countries which will stand by that embattled nation. Of these, only the US is in a position to truly protect Israel from its enemies.
