Analysts: Samsung’s Galaxy S6 is selling even slower than the Galaxy S5

“In the ongoing status check of smartphones, Samsung Electronics is seeing lower-than-expected demand of its flagship Galaxy S6 phone in China, while Apple is seeing continued steady sales of its iPhone 6, according to analysts John Vinh and Michael McConnell of Pacific Crest Securities. Today they offered a survey of U.S. handset sales gathered from store inquiries, as well as feedback from companies in the supply chain,” Jack Purcher reports for Patently Apple. “The Galaxy S6 is selling slower than the prior flagship, last year’s Galaxy S5.”

Purcher reports that the analysts wrote in a note to clients, “Based on carrier conversations, sell-through results for GS6/Edge in the U.S. market appeared in line with carrier expectations with channel inventories remaining relatively lean. Despite lean inventories, we are concerned to see that AT&T had been offering a free Galaxy Tab 4 with the purchase of GS6/Edge during May. Despite the tablet promotion, we saw no upside to our sell-through estimates and see modest risk to component estimates, as we note relatively lean inventories.”

MacDailyNews Take: Can’t flop hard enough – although seeing one of these iPhone knockoffs in the hands of, say, a real estate agent or a car dealer or a contractor is rather helpful as it immediately tells us to look for smarter ones. It’s like instant an IQ test.

  1. I said six months ago to some Android believers that Samsung won’t be in the business of making phones in 2017. They thought I was mad and I said why stay in a business that’s losing money. My six predictions from Jan 2007 have either met their target or are on target to do so.

  2. I think the chart on Patently Apple’s website is labeled wrong. Small inventories suggest good sales but the chart shows the small bars for the S6/Edge, suggesting it’s doing a lot better than the S5. Retailers are usually out-of-stock because they’re sold out. The article’s words would work better if the caption was reversed.

  3. Great take, I was just at a car dealer and the chap had an iPhone. Instant cred.
Incidentally, my iPhone just recognized and spell corrected the name Slartibartfast. HHGttG fans rejoice.

  4. I’ve noticed four types of Samsung users.
    A. The clueless – Who call it a “iPhone”, like they call all tissues “Kleenex”. They usually have a belt clip for it.
    B. The embarrassed – They hold it with one hand trying to block your view so you can’t see what it is. They usually blame their spouse, their company, etc. for making them use one.
    C. The Proud – They walk around all cocky with a chip on their shoulder daring you to say something. A simple smile and a shake of your the head usually devastates them.
    D. The Switcher – They had an iPhone and switched. They either curse what they’re using now, or want to spend an hour convincing you that they made the right decision.

I politely avoid them all as it’s a drain of my time.

  5. Reading between the lines it sounds like Carriers are selling close to what they ordered of the S6/Edge units based on the article’s claim of ‘lean inventories’ in the channel. The crux is whether carriers expected the units to sell well and ordered high, or ordered low with the expectation of keeping inventories low.. One factor that is also mentioned that may have caused both the low sales as well as the relatively low inventories in the channel was difficulties in manufacturing the curved screen of the Edge. Since that problem appears to have been remedied perhaps another look is in order in the next quarter.

    1. They should just check the Android Warehouse Hell of Unsold Devices, and look at how large of an area and how high the stacks of unsold Galaxy S6 are. They’ll have to move some of stock of unsold devices out to make room for Galaxy S6 Plus phones when they ship. 🖖😀⌚️

  6. When I ask what is selling at a place you can buy phones I ask what people are buying and they say the iPhone 6. I then ask what about Samsung’s new phones and they say no one wants them, just the iPhone.
