“The alleged iPad killing tablets are coming, but with price tags that aren’t going to even come close to denting Apple’s lead. When Apple CEO Steve Jobs launched the iPad it wasn’t clear how aggressively these newfangled devices were priced,” Larry Dignan reports for ZDNet. “Now we know because Android tablets and other rival tablets can’t hang on pricing.”
Dignan gives examples, including:
• ViewSonic’s View Pad 7-inch: US$479. 10-inch: $629. Both versions are Wi-Fi with no 3G.
• The HP Slate 500 with Windows 7: $799.
Dignan writes, “These prices illustrate how aggressive Jobs was at the iPad launch. Apple had the device and the pricing to arguably grab at least an 18-month lead.”

MacDailyNews Take: Like lambs to the slaughter they are led.
Our potential competitors are having a tough time coming close to iPad’s pricing, even with their far smaller, far less expensive screens. The iPad incorporates everything we’ve learned about building high value products from iPhone, iPods, and Macs. We create our own A4 chip, our own software, our own battery chemistry, our own enclosure, our own everything. And this results in an incredible product at a great price. The proof of this will be in the pricing of our competitors’ products which will likely offer less for more.”
These are among the reasons we think the current crop of 7-inch tablets are going to be DOA. Dead On Arrival. Their manufacturers will learn the painful lesson that their tablets are too small and increase the size next year, thereby abandoning both customers and developers who jumped on the 7-inch bandwagon with an orphaned product.”
Sounds like lots of fun ahead. – Apple CEO Steve Jobs, October 18, 2010

Heh. Gonna be tough for anyone to combat the iPad now, with competitor items being at those prices but without the brand image the ipad enjoys. Steve Jobs and Apple really played their cards right this time.

It all make sense now why every competitor is opting for the 7 inch. A 10 inch would be more exspensive and not as good as an experience.

It is going to look stupid when they say Apple is too expensive again. Where? Show me? The time of the crap netbooks of past and reality is here now boys and girls.
• There is no Microsoft tax
• Owns the OS’s and key software
• Owns the chip design
• Owns the distribution of the apps
• Owns the stores you get them at
• Has the full turn key / halo package to offer
• Compatible with the next “Just one more thing”
You think media and IT you think Apple!

Someone will make a solar powered “pad” as inexpensive and thin as a credit card sized calculator soon, you watch.
When they do, wake me up, as the iPad is too heavy and too hot.

iPad “competitors” need something to differentiate their products from iPads. They don’t have price. Android might help in some camps. That leaves the 7″ screen. They can hype this fault as a feature and see who buys in.

A little off topic but I was in the apple store regents street today and the thing that really struck me was the queues at the check outs. I haven’t noticed queues like that since the third generation iPod…the one with the touch wheel that propelled apple into the big league.
I saw the 11 inch MacBook air and can see why it is so popular!! It’s going to be a big quarter.

Wait, what? Too heavy? Seriously, dude… Bulk up a bit then. If an iPad is too heavy for you, you must have some kind of muscle problem.

This is the animal that breaks Apple into the Enterprise. Let’s face it, with Enterprise it’s price, price and then price. If all they can do is give less for more, then Apple is in, and in a very big way.
Everyone that’s been searching for the game changer, here it is. Between Apple and Google, Microsoft is caught in a 2 front War, Apple in the OS vs Windows, and Google in the Office vs Cloud / Open App.
The end could come much more quickly than anyone has imagined to date.

My first impression of the iPad (apart from how freaking snappy it was) was that it was heavier than I expected. However, after having used it for a month, I don’t even notice the weight.

On another somewhat unrelated subject; I just walked past a pretty large Starbucks on the UWS (Upper West Side), near Lincoln Centre (Metropolitan Opera/NY Phil). I counted 8 laptops in there — not a SINGLE one of them was Windows. I know UWS is somewhat more affluent (and artistic/academic) than the rest of Manhattan, but all Macs and no Windows? That was quite a surprise!
As for the iPad, it is clearly smooth sailing into version 2 from here. Holiday season will be end up being a killing of epic proportions (if they can make enough of them), there is absolutely nothing that can stop them.

@iPad user
Heavier than you might have expected, but by no means something any normal person could EASILY carry around with one hand safely. Heck, my three year old niece carried mine around one time.
