“The alleged iPad killing tablets are coming, but with price tags that aren’t going to even come close to denting Apple’s lead. When Apple CEO Steve Jobs launched the iPad it wasn’t clear how aggressively these newfangled devices were priced,” Larry Dignan reports for ZDNet. “Now we know because Android tablets and other rival tablets can’t hang on pricing.”
Dignan gives examples, including:
• ViewSonic’s View Pad 7-inch: US$479. 10-inch: $629. Both versions are Wi-Fi with no 3G.
• The HP Slate 500 with Windows 7: $799.
Dignan writes, “These prices illustrate how aggressive Jobs was at the iPad launch. Apple had the device and the pricing to arguably grab at least an 18-month lead.”

MacDailyNews Take: Like lambs to the slaughter they are led.
Our potential competitors are having a tough time coming close to iPad’s pricing, even with their far smaller, far less expensive screens. The iPad incorporates everything we’ve learned about building high value products from iPhone, iPods, and Macs. We create our own A4 chip, our own software, our own battery chemistry, our own enclosure, our own everything. And this results in an incredible product at a great price. The proof of this will be in the pricing of our competitors’ products which will likely offer less for more.”
These are among the reasons we think the current crop of 7-inch tablets are going to be DOA. Dead On Arrival. Their manufacturers will learn the painful lesson that their tablets are too small and increase the size next year, thereby abandoning both customers and developers who jumped on the 7-inch bandwagon with an orphaned product.”
Sounds like lots of fun ahead. – Apple CEO Steve Jobs, October 18, 2010

@iPad user
Heavier than you might have expected, but by no means something any normal person could EASILY carry around with one hand safely. Heck, my three year old niece carried mine around one time.
@predrag
You should see St. Paul, MN. The coffee shops and wifi hotspots here rarely have a Windows machine in sight, throughout most of the city. X3 At least in my eхperience.

Will someone please shoot every hack journalist and blogger who uses the term “________ killer”? Please. Pretty please. I am sick of hearing how this product or that is an iPod killer or iPhone or iPad killer. History shows there is yet to be a competing product to remotely come close to accomplishing this.
Zune, anyone? Uh, no.
It’s the typical conceit of the drive-by media to use the “_________ killer” moniker, to infer that every existence of Apple continues to be threatened. Since when do many quarters of positive earnings surprises, $300+ stock price and over $50 billion in cash and short-term marketable securities as well as zero debt infer that the viability of Apple is in doubt? That never stopped the hacks and Apple-haters from using the “__________ killer” term to hint that Apple is doomed.
It makes Krusty pretty cranky. And trust me, you don’t want me that way. I’m pretty good with a chainsaw.
Now that our good friends in Redmond are again blowing millions on advertising to convince their new “iPhone killer” Windows Mobile 7 is the way to go, look for their lapdog analysts and IT media to proclaim that only Windows Mobile 7 is the standard as the acceptable OS for corporate use. You’ll hear that with phones and you’ll hear that with their crappy iPad wanna-be once they get their s*@t together to roll one out with great fanfare (drum roll, please). Look for CNET and ITWorld et al to join the chorus to proclaim that anything Apple should not be allowed in the hallowed halls of corporate IT.
Get ready for turd quote whores like Enderle to start blathering incoherent babble.
What a crock.
Well, enough for now. Gotta fire up my McCullogh chainsaw…

Have to agree with Predrag on this one. It is absolutely open season for Apple this Christmas and they are the only hunter in the forest with guns and ammo and and whole fleet of ATVs to carry the booty home.
Meanwhile, Samsung managed to show up with little red wagon and a slingshot and Microsoft still can’t quite get their shiny new bow and arrow out of the workshop. RIM bought some brand new, fancy weapon but is still trying to figure out how to open the box and not quite sure which ammo it uses. Nokia lined up a bunch of new Daisy 1938 Red Ryder BB guns and can’t seem to figure out why they can’t even kill a squirrel, much less bring down an elk.
Apple is gonna sell 30 million iPads before anyone else has anything even remotely competitive. The fact that no one has a single 10″ tablet in the same ballpark as Apple ready to sell by Christmas is absolutely stunning.

Yep! Over price with trick to make it in range or so poorly designed as to be a useful as a brick….
As a professor I had who stated to the class multiple times. You cant compare Apples with fish heads.

Much of the time, it is MDN that adds the “____ killer”

This is really incredible. It is exactly as Steve said it is in MDN quote above. Odd that the price makers of the stock market did not listen to him, yet.
When has this ever happened before? One company just “mowing down” the competition. Innovating on product, manufacturing, retail, design. Leaving everyone in the dust.
Was it like this in the early days of Ford Motor Company or of the Edison Light Company? It think this is maybe even more impressive because in those cases the markets were not established and held by others.
When has this ever happened before?
I’ve said it before, but Id love to see Apple di away with the wifi only models & charge 499/599/699 for the 3G/wifi iPads. I read somewhere the 3G chips cost Apple $8 each. It would seem to help with production & everyones bank accounts for my idea to come to pass.
“When has this ever happened before?”
Sony Walkman, maybe? Those things took off huge when the first came out. That’s all I can think of that’s close.
@Krusty. (I do a terrific Krusty, guffaw and all)
I too was very sick of hearing iPod or iPad Killer and now I think of it more as “iPad Killed”. Or “The iPad Killer.” After all the odds are any new devices will more likely BE killed rather than kill. The burden of market share proof is on new devices. Until then they’re iPad Kill.
@Mac Daddy
Yes. Sony was pretty hot. They ruled TV, VCRs, Stereo, Portables and had the amazing walkman. Panasonic was the great copier. The American companies were dying.
Still, the magnitude of the “landslide” feels bigger here. Maybe I am just so much of a fan boy I can’t see it in perspective.
In theory, someone made a pact with the devil. You see it in the movies, you see it right before you. Soon, someone’s soul will be collected.
Or so, as the mythic story goes.
just sayin’ – prove me wrong

a little different perspective on the ipad price. the price is what you pay to get it. the value is what the product gives you in return for the price. the competitors will try to do battle on price eventually, but if the apple value stays high, people with a choice will still chose the best price/value proposition.
apple apparently understands that margins come from delivering value, not making cheaper products. apple’s real competition will come from people who understand that.
BTW, if you have a target red card, you can buy an ipad at 5% off everyday. at least until apple stops them. i was able to combine a one day 10% discount and the 5% to get a 16gb/3g at 15% off. i was so happy. this came off of target’s margin, not apple’s.
The tables have turned……
