Apple: Quite believable, actually

“I might have stumbled into a new drinking game Thursday when it occurred to me that seemingly every other word out of an Apple executive’s mouth at one of the company’s signature keynote presentations was ‘unbelievable,'” Adam Lashinsky writes for Fortune. “(Readers of a certain age will recognize this as a variation of the ‘Bob Newhart’ game, where participants slugged a gulp of beer every time a character on TV said, ‘Hi Bob!’)”

“The funny thing about Apple’s predictable hyperbole is that Apple has become rather believable, its presentation word choice notwithstanding. Thursday’s event was unremarkable in the sense that it was a housekeeping affair for Apple,” Lashinsky writes. “The word that pops up most frequently to describe Apple’s showing is ‘expected.’ Wall Street and other enthusiasts expected all this and Apple delivered. For any other company, such a show of technical and marketing force would be the event of a generation. For Apple it’s just another day at the office.”

“More than once Apple showed a photo that was a powerful commentary on the company,” Lashinsky writes. “It showed the elegant side views of an Apple Watch, an iPhone, an iPad, a Macbook Air, and an iMac. It was a perfect illustration of the power and glory behind Apple’s success, its elegance, its simplicity, and its combination of hardware and software.”

    1. apple has lined these products from left to right to spell, nearly, a-p-p-l-e:

      The appleWatch is the ‘a’
iPhone and iPad the two ‘p’s (I know, this is a stretch)
      Macbook Pro the ‘L’ (obvious)
the iMac retina display the ‘e’ (again, a stretch)

      That’s what I see.

    1. Some people are waaaay too jaded. It was a solid self-denigrating presentation. There was humor in it than normal with Tim making fun of his fashion sense and Craig acknowledging recent iOS8 update issues.

Technology will always have the occasional quickly fixed blip but I’m sure Apple’s competitors wish they were unfixable blips. Is anyone really talking about “bendgate” or the initial issues with updates anymore?

I’m lovin’ the Note 4 and GS5 reviews that show those products are lacking and actually second and third rate, products Scamsucks PR notwithstanding Apple will never bow to – quite the opposite. WAAH, Waah, waaaah… Evil copying Shamdung Emperors getting what their just monkey brain desserts.

  1. Well if Yosemite is any example, Apple certainly are still on their game. My 2 years rMBP is a rocket. Safari is certainly on steroids. Everything seems to work even Parallels.

  2. Insofar as drinking games are concerned, you’ll do well by waiting every quarter or special presentation for an Apple executive to say “unbelievable”. Think of it as kind of getting drunk on the bottle.

For the real hard core alcoholic drinkers though I’d recommend listening to journalistic spew. You also won’t have to wait for a TV show, or reruns, or a quarterly report as journalist spew is sure to come out 30 hours a day, 9 days a week, with extra overtime over the holidays.

Your arms may get sore trying to keep up to spew but even an off the wall pissed to the gills drunk will recognize as material beyond the realm of drunken stupidity.

  3. “For any other company, such a show of technical and marketing force would be the event of a generation.”

Great line. And SO true. It would be nice if various “pundits” and “analysts” realized that other companies can’t even dream of producing such a line-up of quality, refinement and utility.
