The Internet of iThings: Apple’s iBeacon already in 200 million iPhones and iPads

“Over the summer I predicted that the micro-location iBeacon would be the most important new feature in iOS 7. Consumer awareness of the feature is low, but it is estimated to be available (potentially) on almost 200 million iOS devices that contain Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) right now,” Anthony Wing Kosner reports for Forbes. “What’s missing are apps that give users compelling reasons to engage with what we can call the Internet of iThings.”

“There is no real large-scale execution of the technology to speak of yet. Apple has played this feature down because as far as this holiday season is concerned iBeacons are only just kicking in,” Kosner reports. “[Apple] needs to entice developers to really figure out what people need and where exactly they need it. Having an already installed base of 200 million potential customers should make that pretty easy.”

  1. I’m not entirely clear about this, but how does this help Apple’s bottom line? Is Apple selling iBeacon modules so they can make money from hardware sales? I hear Qualcomm is already selling these modules. I know the latest Android smartphones running JellyBean and KitKat are also capable of using low-energy Bluetooth, so it’s not as though Apple has any edge over Android in this matter. People seem to keep making a big deal out of this tech. It might be fine for consumers but what’s Apple going to gain from it? There haven’t been any results that I’ve seen from Macy’s trial so I don’t know how that’s been doing. We’ll probably have to wait until after the Christmas holidays to see how successful it was.

      The short answer is that it doesn’t immediately improve Apple’s bottom line, but the longer answer is that it will do in many ways.

      If stores deploy iBeacon technology, people will see iPhone users using their phones to find their way round places where GPS won’t work. The perception will be that iPhones do things that other phones can’t do – even though some Android phones would also be able to use that technology.

      Similarly stores will be more likely to adopt things like iPads as sales aids – even though other tablets might do the job.

      Increased visibility is always a good thing – especially when that visibility happens while the technology is doing something impressive and useful.

  2. Maybe it’s like the hype around “IT” and “Ginger” that was going to completely revolutionize the world. Then the Segway was revealed to be nothing more than a scooter that will dump you on your face if its batteries get low. (That’s more compelling than a tamagotchi. Fail to feed “IT” and you’ll be dumped on your face.)
