Apple has released AirPort Base Station and Time Capsule Firmware Update 7.6 which is intended for all 802.11n AirPort Express, 802.11n AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule models and provides fixes for the following:
• An issue with performance on overlapping wireless networks
• An issue with AirPlay audio streaming
• An issue with configuring multiple entries for DNS servers

Yep, all of a sudden Time Capsule + 3 AirPort Expresses blinking amber, AirPort Utility launched. Everything green again after updating.
My Extreme (5th gen) is now so snappy that it’s “got blistas on its fingas…”
Imagine that!
I’m getting errors on connecting to the update server. Since it’s working (4 years without missing a beat), I’m in no hurry.
I have the VERY FIRST square AirPort Extreme (802.11n) Base Station; I’m kind of surprised to get another firmware update for it after all these years.
mine installed fine on all three Airports.
Does it fix the issue where the Airport Extreme makes noise EVERY time you download anything wirelessly? It’s a well known design flaw I can’t believe a company as obsessive about silent operation would overlook.
I consider myself a fervent Apple fan, but the Airport Extreme (latest gen) is a noisy POS. Easy to configure though.
what kind of noise, Jimmy?
An annoying scratching noise, that would happen only when it downloaded anything over wifi. AEBS unit was a new and latest gen bought from Amazon.
Found it incredibly annoying since im always in the same room as my router. God, now everyone who hadn’t noticed it will now hate it.
A WiFi router should be completely silent in operation. Ensure that the source of the noise is the Airport Extreme. If it’s making a noise, something’s broken. I can’t imagine what it is because the AEBS has no moving parts inside.
As Redd Foxx would say….”Xactly”.
Maybe if an external drive were hooked to it
but it sounds like someone busted a cap in that mutha
(OK, a leaky capacitor in geek-rap)
For you too young to know
very NSFW volume wise
And no, I did not have any external hard/flash drives connected to the AEBS.
I quickly isolated the noise as coming from the AEBS unit. Not a Time Capsule with an enclosed hard drive, but an Airport Extreme (Fifth Generation).
I quickly noticed the scratching/buzzing sound from the AEBS instantly in every time I browsed or downloaded ANYTHING over WiFi.

I had no choice but to revert back to my trusty and silent WRT54GS from 2004 until the AEBS’s replacement, the e4200 arrived.

And no, I did not have any external drives or NAS connected to the spanking new AEBS.
You might want to RMA the unit. An electrical short is arcing inside. As TowerTone said, it could be a busted capacitor.
I updated 4 yr old extreme and 2 expresses that extend my network in about 60 seconds using the new Airport utility on my iPad. It’s another bit of Apple Magic. Just amazing to watch!
This time i used Apple’s iPad app (Airport Utility) to update all Airports and time capsules.
It was so easy.
