Microsoft Corporation, on their Zune website today stated the obvious. Zune hardware is dead:
“We recently announced that, going forward, Windows Phone will be the focus of our mobile music and video strategy, and that we will no longer be producing Zune players. So what does this mean for our current Zune users? Absolutely nothing. Your device will continue to work with Zune services just as it does today. And we will continue to honor the warranties of all devices for both current owners and those who buy our very last devices.”

Microsoft. Can’t even knife the baby cleanly.

So, if people want to carry their music with them, they’ll now have to buy a Windows Phone…which is great for those who don’t want a fancy phone but still want to carry their tunes.
Apple should offer a promotion: turn in your Zune and get $25 off a new iPod (generous, I know — they’re probably only worth about $10)…
Just imagine how it would feel to crap something that shape! I’ve no idea why the BBC would even bother doing Zune podcasts, as they’ve never been sold in the UK. Other than the Beeb are very pro-MS, and noticeably anti-Apple. They still insist on foisting a Flash-based iPlayer on us for Chris’sake!
It’s because the bbc is funded by Microsoft/Bill Gates foundation. The people responsible for this should be in the tower awaiting trial for high treason. The queen being a proud iPad owner most clearly isn’t amused.

Yea, I’d time that announcement for a day (like when Apple announces the iPhone 5) so it would be buried in other news.
The Zunes will become great collector’s items in the years ahead…Antique Road Show, American Pickers, Auction Kings Gallery 63…will all be selling these with a significant nostalgia premium.
The announcement from MS that the Zune music player is dead, I guess leaves the only question to be asked of MS…
Will you have a real funeral procession for the dearly departed “more blood on the iPod clickwheel” (as MDN would state) Zune player just as you had with that stupid mock funeral for the iPhone?

The Zune still has a very important function: It is the metaphorical replacement for the Edsel!
So many young people nowadays have no clue what the term “Edsel” signifies. Well, youngsters, the Edsel was the automobile equivalent of the Zune.
