WSJ: Apple tablet to ship in March

Apple Online Store“Apple Inc. plans to unveil a new multimedia tablet device later this month, but doesn’t plan on shipping the product until March, people briefed by the company said,” Yukari Iwatani Kane and Geoffrey Fowler report for The New York Times.

“While the shipping time hasn’t been finalized and could change, people briefed on the matter said the new tablet device will come with a 10- to 11-inch touch screen,” Kane and Fowler report. “An Apple spokesman said the company doesn’t comment on rumors and speculation.”

“Analysts currently believe an Apple tablet will be priced at about $1,000, possibly including a subscription to a nationwide Wi-Fi wireless service,” Kane and Fowler report. “The tablet is expected to be a multimedia device that will let people watch movies and television shows, play games, surf the Internet and read electronic books and newspapers.”

  1. The WSJ is now repeating rumors from “people briefed by the company.” They also said not to expect any “near-term” earnings benefit from the tablet, a few days ago. I guess now-until-March is what the WSJ considers “near term.”

  2. What if Apple does not announce a tablet at the Jan. event? May be all this rumor is conjured up with the scheme in mind to make Apple stock tank on that day when the company simply announces a new version of AppleTV, iTunes, and new iPodTouch with video cam?

  3. I think it is a bit early to make a call as to if I would buy one of these or not. Especially since no Apple tablet product exists, and no specifications have been announced.

I’m guessing that an Apple device will have something more than a tablet device I could buy from HTC. My guesses would be ebook purchase through iTunes, “Back to my Mac” capability, and iChat.

Maybe some big hardware game changer, like a built-in data projector, or projected keyboard, so you could put in on a flat surface, and use it like a laptop…

  4. Wow…really? I mean…come on…really? OMG!!

    Really? a Mac Tablet? OMG?

And it will be between 10 and 11 inches? OMG!! Really?

And it is going to be a multimedia device?? Really? OMG!!

And it will be priced around $1,000? OMG!! Really?

And no one from Apple would comment? OMG!! Really?

    I just peed my pants…

  5. @Chuck U Farley,

Thats exactly what my wife wants to know. She’s currently using my “old” Intel Core Duo 17″ MBP and she is very interested in replacing it with the tablet. But only if it allows her to plug her camera in and upload photos.

If its nothing more than a glorified iPod Touch, we’ll probably be getting her a 13″ MBP instead.

  7. How can “people briefed by the company” not know if the mysterious device is a 10 to 11 inch touch screen device. Bad on you Murdoch and your rag WSJ.

By the way, go see Sherlock Holmes. Marvelous!

  8. They said the iPhone wouldn’t sell either.

Then they said the Air wouldn’t sell.

Only thing selling is other companies’ stock it seems. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
