Apple has dramatically increased its supply chain targets for its inaugural foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, following an overwhelming rush of pre-orders that exhausted launch inventory within minutes.

According to a report from DIGITIMES Intelligence, Apple revised its initial 12-month shipment target upward by 44%, boosting production projections from 9.7 million to 14 million units.

The drastic revision underscores a shift in consumer demand that has caught both Apple and component suppliers off guard, creating a stark contrast between explosive interest in the premium dual-screen foldable and softer sales for Apple’s standard flagships.

Pre-Orders Sell Out in Minutes, Shipping Dates Slip into 2027

Pre-orders for the $2,000 dual-screen device opened to high anticipation, with initial launch-day allocations completely selling out almost immediately. Within hours of going live, estimated delivery dates on Apple’s online store slipped from the initial launch date past late January. To curb scalping and manage inventory, Apple has implemented strict purchase limits of two units per customer.

While Apple framed the delays around “extraordinary” demand, industry insiders point to lingering supply chain bottlenecks. Manufacturing sources report that early production yields for the foldable mechanism and specialized display assemblies have faced maturation hurdles, keeping daily output low during the initial ramp-up phase.

Divergence from the Standard Flagship Lineup

The surge in demand for the iPhone Duo stands in marked contrast to consumer reaction toward the standard lineup.

• iPhone Duo: Igniting fresh growth in a premium market tier, driven by early adopters and high feature differentiation.

• Standard Flagships: Higher price tags and incremental, minor hardware upgrades have resulted in more cautious adoption.

Upstream supply chain checks reinforce this divergence. Key suppliers, such as camera lens maker Largan Precision, have noted early order trims and reduced long-term visibility for standard components, suggesting consumers are either holding onto older devices longer or opting to skip routine iterative upgrades in favor of the new form factor.

Catalyst for the Broader Foldable Market

Apple’s official entry into the foldable space is expected to dramatically accelerate the adoption of dual-screen hardware industry-wide.

Global Foldable Smartphone Shipment Growth Forecasts (DIGITIMES)

Year Projected Growth Rate Key Driver
2025 7.4% Baseline market adoption
2026 25.7% Initial entry of Apple (iPhone Duo)
2027 59.1% Full production scale & app ecosystem

Beyond hardware supply chains, software developers are rushing to adapt iOS applications for multi-screen, dual-window productivity. Apple is rolling out expedited software updates and specialized layout APIs across third-party development suites to capitalize on the new form factor. As competitors adjust their product roadmaps to counter the iPhone Duo’s momentum, Apple’s supply chain is racing to scale manufacturing to meet unprecedented demand.

MacDailyNews Take: iPhone Duo is a first generation product, but it’s clearly a hit that will only get better and better with each passing year!

  1. I haven’t encountered these “strict purchase limits”. I have 4 Duos on order, 3 last Friday and 1 just now, hoping that one may be available for pickup sooner than my earliest Nov. 9-16 timeframe. One is for me, one is for a family member, another for resale if it makes sense and the last i’ll cancel. It’s worth noting that the Jan. 25, 2027 delivery we’re seeing when ordering now hasn’t budged since last Friday. I’m all but certain this is Apple’s maximum backstop and we’ll only see delivery dates contract from here on out. Astounding if they actually underestimated demand by ~50%, it’ll be nearly as amazing if they can ramp production to meet it by Q1 ‘27.
