RUMOR: Apple to launch tablet with 9.6-inch Multi-Touch™ screen in February 2010
Monday, September 14, 2009 - 11:56 PM EDT

Apple Store"As Apple Inc. will launch its newest tablet PCs [wince] next February, a couple of Taiwanese suppliers of PC parts and components have managed to join the supply chain and will start delivery to Apple in December, according to industry sources," Steve Chuang reports for China Economic News.

"The tablet PC [wince] features a 9.6-inch screen, finger-touch function and built-in HSPDA (high speed download packet access) module, and adopts a P.A. SEMI processor chip and long lasting battery pack, selling for between US$799 and US$999," Chuang reports.

MacDailyNews Take: Every time Chuang uses the term "PC" in relation to Apple's "tablet," we wince. Apple has long used the term "PC" against Microsoft Windows, it no longer stands for "personal computer," it stands for a machine blighted by Windows: a "Poisoned Computer." So, call it a "MacBook touch," if you must; or "Mac tablet" or even "iTablet." Leave the "PC" out of it. Also, we're not sure what he means by "newest," unless he's counting iPhone and iPod touch (Newton?) as Apple's first "tablets."

Chuang continues, "DynaPack International Technology Corp. has been exclusively contracted to supply up to 300,000 units of long lasting battery packs a month for Apple`s newest tablet PCs... Wanshih Electronic Co., Ltd., a leading supplier of PC mini coaxial cables in Taiwan, is expected to absorb around 70% of Apple's orders for mini coaxial cables for the tablet PCs [wince]... Mag. Layers Scientific-Technics Co., Ltd. and Wintek Corp. will supply power chokes and touch panels, respectively, for use in Apple`s newest tablet PCs [wince]."

Mdn: why do you wince when "pc" is used in relation to apple? Apple released the worlds first commercially viable pc. Take back that term! It belongs to apple, not Microsoft.

Sep 15, 09 - 12:04 am Comment from: I hate AT&T;

If this thing requires purchase of a plan from AT&T;then Apple can shove it, and this is coming from someone who has been dying for an Apple tablet for the last 10 years.

Sep 15, 09 - 12:07 am Comment from: Grow up, MDN.

PC is a generic term - get used to it.

Sep 15, 09 - 12:09 am Comment from: Jubei

PC = Piece o' Crap.

iTablet, iPod Pro, Mac Pod is more like it.

Sep 15, 09 - 12:17 am Comment from: MacDust

What are "mini coaxial cables"? Are they saying this will connect to your cable box? Sounds like old tech to me.

Sep 15, 09 - 12:20 am Comment from: ken1w

I like "iPod Pro." smile

"iPod" itself is a great name. It started out as a music player, but Apple (Steve Jobs) obviously picked it because they saw it becoming much more over time.

Sep 15, 09 - 12:28 am Comment from: MediaXYZ

I guess that means no new tablet devices frpm Apple for Christmas.

If they have HSDPA, wouldn't they need FCC approval? Would that mean a full announcement from Apple will be soon, like they did for the iPhone?

Sep 15, 09 - 12:29 am Comment from: blah blah blah...

I seriously doubt it will bound to any carrier. If anything it will an add-on option. When they finally release this beast out of it's cage, they would only be hurting themeselves by binding it to a monthly contract. It's a big risk doing that.

Sep 15, 09 - 12:40 am Comment from: Deus Ex Technica

As it will likely NOT be monikered an "iPhone", Apple would ave no obligation with this device under their exclusive contract with AT&T;. My prediction is that Apple is currently negotiating "dumb pipe" agreements with all carriers. It's what Apple wants for it's customers, and right now Apple is holding all the negotiating cards.

Can you imagine the pressure on any U.S. telco CEO right now to NOT say no to such an agreement with Apple, especially knowing that Apple is seeking the same agreement from their competitors? Imagine being the only telco who DOESN'T carry the iPad?

Apple can write their own ticket right now. And they probably are.

Sep 15, 09 - 12:51 am Comment from: Mac Dev Vet

Apple, pre-annouce it before holiday season!
Why? Because:
- this will not cannibalize any of your existing hardware
- it will give time to developers to adopt their iPhone apps to higher resolution
- it will steal the Christmas, like Grinch, from the tablet/netbook market - people will save money and wait for your iPad instead of buying some other junk
- the media will reach a new level of hysteria

Maxi-pad, and it'll have wings - for the 'cloud'.

Sep 15, 09 - 01:28 am Comment from: MacTony

shhhhhh.... I just heard from my super duber reliable source that due to unforeseen pre-production issues completely unrelated to the iTablet, the release date will be moved to March 14, 2010.

I just read that they are catching fire!

Sep 15, 09 - 01:42 am Comment from: garymac

O.K. Imagine this...
An iMac type frame (docking station) with either a connected keyboard or wireless, ejectable screen (tablet) for on the go with a great battery life and iPhone keyboard. This product will be heavily marketed to the education field (new eMac?), it will contain a large enough hard drive (flash, SSD) to hold ALL of students schoolbooks (in digital form).
Goodbye schoolbooks.
1 device. Multifunction. Homework transferred digitally. Education as all of us know it is about to change.
Now look at the medical field. Doctors and nurses all equipped with Apple's newest device. All patients records available with a screen tap, with on the spot input. Prescriptions delivered to local drug stores with a tap on the screen. No more doctors prescription notes in highly illegible handwriting.
Now look at the general consumer... you and me.
I want one.

Sep 15, 09 - 02:16 am Comment from: this story is...

this story is shit. plain and simple. you never know with apple plain and simple. Look at what happened with the touch, ooooo camera, NOT. So sit back relax, don't get your hopes up, work with the tools you do have instead of imagining them up, lets get on with it. YES apple is going to release a bigger touchscreen device, they would absolutely be foolish not to. But do you really think they give a shit what we think, no other wise the iPhone would have lasers. So mark your calendars for the 1st week of january for CES, when it's introduce, and make sweet love to in february when it comes out.

Sep 15, 09 - 02:16 am Comment from: HolyMackerel

We should refer to Windows-based Computers as 'WC's - appropriate double meaning?...

Sep 15, 09 - 02:18 am Comment from: justme2

Would fit my prediction of Apple making big splash at COMDEX with this product. Announce at COMDEX, rollout a month later.

Sep 15, 09 - 02:29 am Comment from: Macaday

1. I don't think MDN should 'wince' when Apple Macs are referred to as PC's. For too long people have regarded them as something different - which worked in favour of Wintels. Macs are just the best PC's that money can buy.

2. February 2010 or whenever it launches may become a tipping point. Because it will likely coincide (planned?) with the tsunami that will engulf Microsoft - Google Wave.

Sep 15, 09 - 02:33 am Comment from: ken1w

@ HolyMackerel

> We should refer to Windows-based Computers as 'WC's - appropriate double meaning?...

How funny... Isn't that what "PC" users used to call Mac users, before Mac OS X? Now WE have the more "serious" UNIX computer, that is as user-friendly or as geeky as you want it to be.

Oh, great. Now I have to suffer through the rest of the year, and my birthday, anticipating a Mac Tablet.

OTOH, I'm getting really good at ignoring rumors... especially tablet ones! I'll survive grin

Feb 14 sounds like a good to release this. With some groovy heart/apple screen saver. Release it 5:00pm so we can realy put our relationships to the test. Hmmm... Romantic dinner or queue outside the Apple store. Decisions decisions.

Here we go again.
Analysts spouting crud again.
"I have no credible info, I'm just pullin' stuff out of my nether region-but Apple is going going to release a super nifty gadget that sucks, hums, washes the dishes, tucks you in at night....and get this , it's powered by unicorn farts!"

Sep 15, 09 - 04:00 am Comment from: Figurative

Oh you can call it mactouch you can calls it macbooktouch, you can calls it a touchbook, you's can even calls itva touchpod, but's ya doesn't haves to call it a PC!!

Sep 15, 09 - 06:51 am Comment from: Wings2Sky

Here's what I would buy. A small tablet that is hinged in the middle with a continuous screen across the hinge. One one half of the screen there are two small dimples that represent the location of the home keys on the touch pad. You can hinge the pad to type. You can open the pad completely to have a full screen in landscape mode (for movies, ebooks, presentations). Or you can close it to make it smaller and protect the screen.
I just don't like the ergonomics of typing with my head down. But I will withhold any negative predictions as I completely got it wrong on the shuffle and eventually bought one!

In 1984 when I was trained in the features of the first Mac 128, the trainer held up the 400k diskette emergency ejection "tool." He announced that "this is the Apple PC" as he displayed the PaperClip.

Sep 15, 09 - 07:30 am Comment from: clyde2801

I'd like to have a bigger device myself (dang my old eyes) with anywhere internet access with a caveat or two.

Having anywhere, anytime web/idisk access would be nice, but I don't want to be a$$ raped by AT&T;, that is why I don't have an iPhone. (It's bad enough being apple's bit^#.)

$800 to $1000 when you can buy a fully functioning laptop for $999? I understand apple not wanting to cannibalize laptop sales, but that's pretty steep, unless it has some really kick-a$$ new features.

At that price, if web access is included (ala' amazon kindle) it would be acceptable. Otherwise, it raises a lot of questions: Will apple try to get a carrier to subsidize the purchase price and tie it to a telco? What data access plan/price would the telco have?
Would apple arrange for a flat rate, all you can eat data plan?

If it only has wi-fi for internet access at that price, meh.

Sep 15, 09 - 07:49 am Comment from: Road Warrior

Gee, these reporters are getting sloppy, I mean should it not read "As Apple Inc. will launch its newest tablet PCs [wince] next February, thus replacing it's older versions of tablet PCs."

Then it would truly be as ridiculous as it sounds.

Sep 15, 09 - 07:59 am Comment from: Thorin

iPod Cinema grin

Sep 15, 09 - 08:16 am Comment from: Amos

It's not designed or meant to cannibalize MacBook sales, just as the Touch is not meant to. It will create a new market and do everything Garymac said --- it's an iBook, stupid, not a tablet, the totally new iBook, fully integrated with iTunes, the App Store and the new Book Store. Bet the farm.

Give me lasers on my iPhone!

Sep 15, 09 - 10:41 am Comment from: DLMeyer

But ... will it have a built-in camera, with adjustably focus and focal length and a 99 gajillion-pixel ... oh, never mind.
I'm bored to the "frack you" point with rumors of Mac tablet PCs. I do (still) expect they are on their way, do (still) believe they will fill in the bottom end of the MacBook (not Pro) line, but am bored silly with rumors of "details" beyond that. Apple will bring them to light when it suits Apple, at a screen size that suits Apple, and with other features (say it with me) that suits Apple.

Sep 15, 09 - 11:22 am Comment from: Olternaut

I tell ya, that Apple tablet had better impress. And I mean impress the hell outta the public.

September's ipod event was C grade at best. So I really hope Steve Jobs is screaming at his crew right now to make sure the tablet is a success.

Sep 15, 09 - 12:01 pm Comment from: Digital Mercenary

So would the current Macbook be dropped in favor of this new device? It might make sense, especially if they wanted to re-use the term Macbook. Although it would also make sense for Apple to keep the current Macbook for education sales only.

Sep 15, 09 - 12:29 pm Comment from: YourRight

Yes it's true apple has used the word PC in a negative way. But was is also true is that when apple switched to its current OS a few years back then went to a Unix OS (not there own) that runs on PC hardware, sort of blurring the line.

Microsoft actually owns TabletPC.com so that's another reason the might stay away from the word PC.

They will also not use the words macbook anything, iphone grande, etc.

It will be called the Apple iPAD, iTablet, or some other new name. It is a new device and will get a new used name.

If it is sold for 700 plus they may have problems. Crunchpad is suppose to be 300, and netbook companies will be producing models for 300-400 by 2010. It will really have to be feature loaded to be worth double the price.

Rob,

I remember using the paper clip to eject discs from my Mac, too. I also remember asking myself, "Who was the moron who designed this piece of crap disc drive?"

What a freaking embarrassment! What was the reason for needing a paper clip anyhow other than making users cognizant of needing to scrounge around for a makeshift tool to remove a disc that should have ejected with the mere press of a single key.

Sep 16, 09 - 12:04 am Comment from: ZB

$799 = AT&T;2-year plan.
$999 = Other carrier (+ tethering).
Then everybody can play & everybody is happy.
Hey "garymac", you stole my idea.....from about 18 months ago. Of course, I got my idea from an Apple patent.

Nov 18, 09 - 03:32 pm Comment from: Fullmetal99012

Does everyone who owns an apple product have to be a douche. "Macs are perfect, macs don't crash, etc etc." That's absolutely not true. I'm not saying that Windows Based machines are perfect either, they crash, but macs crash too. also, macs are horribly overpriced. I can get a new windows laptop that's is fast for under $500 bucks, and yet a new mac book pro or air is over $1,000. As for macs not getting viruses, that's only because not many people have macs. If everyone switches to mac, then coders will bring their viruses to the mac platform. Then you mac users will find a way to blame PC's.

Nov 18, 09 - 05:06 pm Comment from: HolyMackerel

@ Fullmetal99012

I would like to believe what you say is true as it is probably your experience. Certainly what you say re price is true. But I work in one of those PC-based organisations who are given a $500 laptop and find they fall apart as fast as plastic Nokia phone, or find lots of even MS software doesn't work on their own OS, or works inconsistently for no apparent reason, or is unnecessarily complex.

Many cope with Windows daily then use a Mac at home. Some, like me, use Parallels. It is true that not everything on the Mac 'just works' and sometimes apps do crash. But running both OS's side by side gives you the best comparison, and to me Windows XP just doesn't compare.

The success of Windows 7 is much to do with its Mac-likeness. But the proliferation of <$500 NetBooks is killing the gloss of W7 very quickly. If most businesses bought decent speed, well made $1000 laptops then Apple might have something of concern, but they don't, so Apple doesn't.

Don't even raise the virus issue since your arguments were OK until then. Any virus that gets onto my Mac needs Admin access to auto-launch on login, otherwise it is limited to that session only and is lost on a reboot. If a web page or any downloaded app asks for my password then I know it is to be avoided. Problem solved.

Nov 21, 09 - 09:29 am Comment from: Fullmetal891

@ Holy Mackerel: I apologize about the viruses thing. That password thing also brings up an interesting point. I think windows may have tried to fix/implement something similar with User Account Control, but it failed. UAC was the worst thing ever. it was very annoying, and would pop up whenever you used a legitimate program. I also believe that it probably didn't stop very many viruses.

P.S. i forgot my login stuff and my old email doesn't work so I have a new account
