“Gates, in Las Vegas Sunday, boasted that Microsoft has sold more than 100 million copies of Windows Vista since the OS launched last January,” McDougall reports. “While the number at first sounds impressive, it in fact indicates that the company’s once dominant grip on the OS market is loosening. Based on Gates’ statement, Windows Vista was aboard just 39% of the PC’s that shipped in 2007.”
“Gates’ statements at the 2003 and 2008 Consumer Electronics Shows thus reveal — calculating roughly — that Windows XP captured about 67% of the new PC market during its first year. Vista, by contrast, captured just 39%, or less than half, of new PC shipments in 2007,” McDougall reports. “The numbers are no doubt troubling for Microsoft, which spent millions of dollars developing and promoting Windows Vista.”
McDougall reports, “Contributing to Vista’s woes is the fact that new desktop alternatives to the Windows operating system have emerged in recent years — including Apple’s beefed up Leopard…”

The mental health agency I work for in Texas has purchased about 50 new Dells over the past year, and the IT guys are erasing Vista and ‘upgrading’ to XP. I doubt Vista will ever see the light of day.

I am a Mac user and have had Vista foisted upon me. I took a college course last semester that required us to use software on a CD. The computers in the lab ran Vista. Every time we put the CD in to run the software, we were prompted for an admin password for “security”, which of course we didn’t have since it was a school-run computer lab. The best part is that the IT department didn’t even have to turn off user access control. They found a workaround that allowed us to run the software after less than a half an hour of tinkering. So the “security” in Windows Vista was both annoying and easily circumvented. Useless. This experience is tame compared to some of my friends’ Vista experiences.
Windows (Vista, XP, 2000, you name it) is a joke. I pity people who have it foisted upon them regularly. Consider yourself lucky that it actually works for you the way it’s supposed to (for the time being).

I installed it on my home PC, put up with it for two months, then deleted it.
It’s crap. And the user interface changes take it further away from usability and closer than ever to a miserable “absolutely everything has to go thru and Explorer window” garbage.
