“Big-box retailer Target is poised to become just the second third-party retailer to market Apple Inc.’s new Apple TV device at its brick-and-mortar retail stores,” Aidan Malley and Kasper Jade report for AppleInsider. “The bullseye-themed shop will join Best Buy, which agreed to cary the inaugural Apple living room device just last month.”
“People familiar with Target’s plans say units should turn up in official capacity at several locations by month’s end, exploiting the monthly rollover (or electronics department ‘reset’) to establish a presence. Like Apple’s own retail stores, Target will reportedly equip at least some locations with a full-blown demonstration unit hooked up to a widescreen HDTV, showcasing the product for shoppers unfamiliar with its concept,” Malley and Jade report.
Malley and Jade report, “It’s unclear at this time how many of Target’s stores plan to carry the Apple media system or, similarly, the size of the merchant’s commitment to flashy showfloor display units. A spokesperson for the retailer declined to provide specifics of the deal after conferring with Target’s ‘internal partners’ …Target currently markets Apple TV only through its online store.”

LOL Scooter.
re: apple can’t break into the top 5 computer manufacturers…
strategically (and that’s all that matters in the long run) being in the top 5 by marketshare or units sold may be their doom. if you design your business to run in that race, you better be ready to make your money and run. companies that are at that level cannot be adaptive, innovative and nimble. the money you make as an equity owner will be based on projected future earning, which cannot be sustained. that’s why the dell market cap is less than apple’s while their revenue is almost 10 times higher.
apple is already my number one because that’s what i choose to use. because i choose, i pay whatever premium i need to make that choice. the computers in the top 5 generally get their not by user choice (i am given a dell to use at work-and the word given describes accurately its value). those of use making our own choice are what makes apple profitable in their business model. they are a margin company, not a volume company. so don’t look, for them to crack the top 3. they are in the top 5 by individual choice and will make more money than any other manufacturer in their group.
back to the thread…
consumers choose. that’s what made ipod a smash hit and will do the same for iphone & appletv. apple does not have to buy its way into market share like sony and ms do with xbox and ps3. it does it by providing compelling value (consumers choose and they are smart). the creating of value is what creates markets. apple has a history of doing this, lest we forget the apple ii. they fundamentally do this because unlike ms and sony, they are (like hp used to be) an innovation company.
retailers, like target, are in the business of merchandising. their internal value system is $/sq ft. what will ultimately drive retailers to place appletv on the floor is that equation. this is also why apple’s stores are so successful. their $/sq ft. is world class. based on that, there should be an apple store inside every target. unfortunately, they haven’t figured that out.
CandTsmac –
i know – but then Apple should not sell its products in a substandard environment.
Touché, Scooter!
P.S. Publix sounds like a nasty bar contest.
You can also get tv at Sam’s Club.
@twisted mac freak:
You can’t get mace at Macy’s.
Fast Food edition:
You can’t buy bells at Taco Bell
You can’t buy kings (or any royalty for that matter) at Burger King
You can’t buy old farmers at McDonalds
You can’t ride mass transit at Subway
I think they are available at Target only because Amazon.com sells Apple TV through Target. If you look for Apple TV on amazon.com you’ll see this in small print:
“Availability: In Stock. Ships from and sold by Target. Gift-wrap available”
And you can’t get rivers or jungles, trees, or women from Amazon…
“You can’t buy old farmers at McDonalds”
Or from Dell, for that matter.
“You can’t buy bells at Taco Bell”
Not much of a taco, either.
emmayche: True, but you can get maced there.
Target’s electronics departrment sucks big time. It’s all low end junk – but Apple want’s the exposure.
I DID see a queen at Dairy Queen……
