Apple sends reps to WinHEC to keep tabs on Microsoft

Apple has apparently surprised CNET’s Joris Evers by attending Microsoft’s WinHEC hardware engineering conference.

Evers reports that four Apple employees are attending the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference in Seattle this week to see what Microsoft is doing, “‘I am attending WinHEC to keep tabs on what is happening in the industry and what Microsoft is looking to do over the next year,’ said David Harrington, manager of the hardware technology group in Apple’s worldwide developer relations department. He declined to make any further comment, citing Apple’s public relations policy.”

Evers reports, “WinHEC is meant for companies that develop hardware to work with or run Microsoft’s Windows operating system. Apple is flirting with that with its trial release in April of Boot Camp, which is software that enables Windows XP to run on Intel-based Macs. However, an Apple representative last week reiterated to CNET News.com that the company has no plans to ship Windows on any of its systems.”

  1. Before everyone goes crazy, remember Apple still has iTunes on Windows to look out for. They have to know about Windows changes and hardware compatibility for the sake of keeping iTunes humming along. Don’t want Microsoft throwing a wrench into Windows that will take down iTunes. Also, they want to make sure their Macs can run Windows without problems so that switchers will have an easier time of switching.

    Move along….nothing to see here.

  2. However, an Apple representative last week reiterated to CNET News.com that the company has no plans to ship Windows on any of its systems.

But they are definatly allowing Windows on Mac’s in order to sell more hardware.

Apple resellers are already selling Mac’s with Windows pre-installed.

So may I ask, what the heck is the difference?

If Apple doesn’t install it, then they don’t have to support it. But Apple heavily advertises and sells OfficeMac, what’s the difference in selling Vista?

    None.

Microsoft’s office application familly is productivity software. Microsoft Operating Systems are counter-productivity software. Probably why Apple promotes the use of one and not the other. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  4. So what if they’re keeping tabs on Microsoft? its not like they’ll get any primo software/hardware out of it because M$ dosn’t make primo ANYTHING. At least when its the other way around, M$ manages to blatantly steal Apple’s ideas from right under their feet!

MW: The industry is led by Apple. Period.

Story: Apple checks on Microsoft at WinHEC
I’ve attending my third consecutive WinHEC here in Seattle, and
there have been Apple people here every year. Many of the folks
who come are looking to see what Microsoft is doing with the
hardware OEMs, since Apple’s hardware uses a lot of standard
components (CPUs, GPUs, RAM, Hard Drives, Optical Drives, Digital
    Cameras, etc. etc. etc.)

  6. They are considering renaming it WinHELL with all due respect to their demonically possessed CEO, Sith Ballmer. Chairs will be bolted down as advised by their attorneys mainly for safety issues. Raingear will be handed out to the first ten rows of the keynote to protect them from wave after wave of sweat flingings.

  7. Can’t wait for Microsoft to show Apple who really has the power. Just wait and see. Windows Vista will do everything OSX does but people will actually buy it in masses. Bwaaa Bwaaaahaaa haaa…… Soon as Mr Jobs retires, Apple will finally die die die die……

  8. To Love Windows

The only reason people will “buy it in masses” is because new computers will get sold. The upgrade market for Windows 2000 and XP actually sucked and people mostly got a new OS with a new computer.

PC’s have become mostly disposable because of this.
I’m sure Vista will prove no different and few people will run out to buy it as an upgrade for their existing XP or 2000 baesd system (mostly becuase MS spec’s for machines that can run Vista well made a lot of running PC’s obsolete)

And FWIW let me know when Windows vulnerabilities come down close to the number in OS X will you ? At that point maybe Windows will do what OS X does but I’ll bet UAP makes it too annoying to use.

  9. Love Windows,

Apple MIGHT die without Steve Jobs.

Microsoft WILL die WITH Steve Ballmer.

As for waiting and seeing with Vista… we’ve been waiting for several years now, and MS is ready to announce still further delays (no surprise).

You’re like a fanboy of a dying car company. “Sure the current lineup sucks, but you just watch! The long-delayed new models should be out soon and then we’ll show you! I just know they’ll rule and be top sellers again, right?”

Once a company loses its buzz it’s very, very hard to get it back.
The only buzz in Redmond today are the flies around Ballmer’s biomass.
