Microsoft Windows Vista Beta running on Apple Intel-based Mac

“A few weeks ago we launched our tongue-in-cheek contest to dual boot Windows Vista on an Intel Mac… but little did we know Apple was planning on dropping the Boot Camp news a few days later,” OSx86 Project reports. “Nevertheless, Vista has proved a challenge even with Boot Camp, so we were fairly excited when AirmanPika let us know about his success with installing and booting Vista. Although several people have gotten the installer to work, AirmanPika is one of the first to get Vista up and running – and the first we’re aware of to give some screenshots. The installation isn’t without its glitches yet – and you have to delete your OS X partition – but it’s a start.”

  1. Selling hardware is their business. That’s where their revenue comes from, that’s where their profits come from, and revenue and profit is what defines a business. Everything else they do is in support of this core business. Apple is famous for its software — both the Mac OS and their own Mac applications — but they make way less money selling Mac software than they do selling Mac hardware. And the iTunes Music Store is just the equivalent of “software” for iPods.

John Gruber has some good insights on the matter.

  2. Hello!!!

With a Mac, OSX and Boot Camp – why would anyone upgrade to Vista?

Anyone who has existing Windows software, has an existing copy of Windows XP and buys a Mac- it seems to me this kills ANY reason to upgrade/buy Vista unless its a new Dell/HP PC.

Am I the only one who see this?

Boot Camp gives the window users the safety blanket to make the big switch, gets the switcher a reason to switch with new hardware and they can use the OLD hardware (keyboard, mouse, monitor) with the Mac Mini.

    Seems like checkmate to me.

  3. Ok Matrix3,

    Try this on for size.

If Vista is as good looking as Mac OS X, even more secure, and most all programs are written for it, why would anyone buy a more expensive Mac just to run Mac OS X when there is little software for it?

That’s the checkmate Microsloth is working on right now. They are not going to give their monopoly away to Apple or anyone else.

All things being equal between the two OS’s, the availability of software and compatability will be the issue.

If Mac OS X can run Vista applications, then it’s a stalemate.

  4. Morty:

You might have a point BUT Vista isn’t shipping this year.

So all those that might have picked up Vista with a new PC this year for the holidays’ can’t buy it.

Guess what, they go to a big box retailer, they have money to burn they see the new shiny Mac’s, they hear they can use their exsting software and the windows they know and feel comfortable with and they BUY now.

Oops, MS with Vista missed the boat…

    Checkmate!

  5. Whether this is good or bad, I just hope developers don’t stop developing for the Mac.

Mac game developers are watching this Windows on Mac thing with great interest.

You see, the ports of Windows games to the Mac has always taken time, improvements made.

Now Mac users can just buy the Windows version instead of waiting for the Mac version to be released.

Mac’s use OpenGl and Vista will use DirectX, so this is problem getting both to be released at the same time.

  6. Morty… er. MacDude asks.. “If Vista is as good looking as Mac OS X, even more secure, and most all programs are written for it, why would anyone buy a more expensive Mac just to run Mac OS X when there is little software for it?”

BECAUSE VISTA IS NONE OF THOSE THINGS! VISTA DOES NOT EVEN EXIST YET! Come on man, get a clue… M$ has been working on the vaporware called Vista for over five years now and it has just been delayed again till 2007.

There is plenty of software available for the Mac… Over 16,000 titles to be exact…Developers are comitting to the platform in droves… Apple has been consistently selling more Macs and breaking records for the past ten quarters. Apple is set to deliver another brand new OS (Leopard) probably before Vista. Mac marketshare is growing three times faster than the PC industry.. Apple is strong and healthy with 9 billion dollars in the bank..

Things are good for Apple, lose the fatalistic spiel… I’m sick of hearing it…

If you want to run Windows and buy a Dell, THEN GO AHEAD.. What exactly is your point here? I just don’t get it..

  7. So all those that might have picked up Vista with a new PC this year for the holidays’ can’t buy it.

Temporary delay, Vista for buisnesses will be released in November and for consumers early next year.

All people will do is buy a Vista capable PC for the holidays and wait for the Vista release to buy it.

    Come on, use your head.

By the way a 64 bit Intel Core Duo will be released in November as well. So there will be powerful PC’s ready to be sold by the holidays.

PC vendors or Microsoft might even give a discount on Vista because of the delay.

  8. Hey Mike,

If I’m this “macdude” your refering so much and are telling people to ignore, then why are you responding to me?

Really, I think your the depressed insane one.

    macdude on the brain.

  9. Hi Morty,

Sorry, the businesses that CAN buy Vista in November, won’t.

Think about it, first ru of a new operating system, you don’t want to migrate your users until all the bugs are worked out in the real world. The worst thing you can do to yourself is to install a buggy, untested version and they have all your users crying for help. You’ll test it first on a “small” group and after it is proven to run with your existing software – you roll it out.

Oh, and the 64 bit Intel Cores, guess who might have that up on their new systems for holiday? Here’s a hint – it will be called the replacement for the PowerMac’s. You’ve given people another reason to buy a Mac for the holidays!

    I think it’s checkmate!

And by the way, a regular PC with a coupon for Vista when it comes out- most people want immediate gratification.

The MD word: Nuclear – as that’s what Apple dropped on MS

  10. Matrix3,

If you beleive a simple delay of a OS that’s 95% market share is all of a sudden going to kill them off, you got rocks in your head.

Vista could be the most bug ridden, insecure piece of garbage and still most everyone will use it.

Just like they do XP now.

Actually I hope Vista fails really, really bad. Apple will make out like gangbusters.

But Apple is betting Vista will copy a lot of OS X features “Redmond start your copiers” so they are planning a counter to that, which M$ is just playing a waiting game because Apple isn’t going after M$ big market, enterprise.

M$ is waiting for Lepoard, then will add those features to Vista and release it with a big media frenzy that will make Apple simply disappear in comparison.

I wish Apple would get back to it’s innovative roots, Mac OS X is still too complicated for most.

  11. Hi Morty,

Yes, I agree with you that this won’t kill MS off in a month.

I hope I didn’t come across with that time frame.
BUT… Checkmate in the sense that this will be the beginning of the slide of MS, this will give people the reason to try OSX, this will give people the reason (with MS help) not to upgrade to Vista and by default keep people on XP long enough for them to switch. Checkmate as in stoping the momenteum that MS had by defauland giving everyone the option to use a different operating system. We’re at a nexus which was created by MS with a new(copy) operating system called Vista and the delay of releasing it by their own timetable.

Apple taking advantage of this window(no pun intended) with the switch to Intel and Apple’s better Operating System. No one can really say that Apple copied Longhorn/Vista since it’s still not out.

MD word: leaders, as in that’s what Apple is.

  12. MacDude asks “then why are you responding to me?”

Because I seriously want to know what you get out of jacking this forum.. For months, I’ve been watching you and your fatalisitic attitude about everything…

Absolutely everything that you write is about how Apple has wronged the world… Never and I mean NEVER have I seen you write anything positive at all about Apple..

I really don’t get it… Is it really fun for you… Is this a form of entertainment for you? Please explain..

And don’t try your I’m Morty, who’s MacDude line… I can see your spots from a mile away..

  13. Mike,

I believe that you are on the correct path.

Maybe you’ll find ‘Morty’, or ‘The Poster formerly known as MacDude’, here >

MDN/MW: I’d bet ‘money’ that you will.

PS. Nothing like a disgruntled, former-employee, pissant – to post excretive nonsense, in an attempt to rattle the chains of those who are mostly happy with the products of your former employer.

  14. Thanks Bloke!

It all makes sense now!! MacDude used to work at Apple and was FIRED! That’s where all his pent up anger comes from… MacDude loses his job at Apple and spends all his time badmouthing and trying to spread FUD and rumors..

    Wow! Talk about a HEAD-CASE!
