“The new version of Microsoft Windows, called Vista, has slipped again. It was originally going to ship in 2003. Then 2005. Then 2006. Now in early 2007. I’m not surprised, having seen a demo of Microsoft’s new programs at an ‘event’ for tech buyers in New York last week,” Daniel Lyons writes for Forbes. “The new programs are phenomenally complex, with scores of buttons and pull-down menus and myriad connections among various applications… Meanwhile, 500 tech buyers sat there in the dark, their eyes glazing over from the sheer mind-numbing pointlessness of most of this stuff. The audience laughed out loud when the Microsoft guy showed off a kludgey system that lets you fetch Outlook e-mail messages using voice commands from a cell phone.”
“Even more ironic is that Microsoft has ginned up a new slogan, ‘People Ready,’ which apparently is meant to describe its software, or maybe it describes companies that use its software, or whatever. Who knows? It’s one of those phrases that means anything, and so means nothing,” Lyons writes. “Who makes this stuff up? Do they actually pay this person? And is Microsoft just figuring out now that its programs are used by–gasp–people? …Worse yet was the grumbling afterward in the press room. Why the hell did they drag us here? we wondered. We’d been promised big news and some earth-shattering announcements by Microsoft flacks who insisted this was something we shouldn’t miss. Instead, we got a demo that was about as compelling as a root canal followed by a 15-minute press conference with Ballmer, the Microsoft chief executive who seems incapable of speaking at any level softer than a bellow.”
“Worst of all, I can’t believe Microsoft actually held this big nonevent “event” only a few days before announcing another screw-up in Vista. If Ballmer knew he was about to announce a delay and still had this event, he’s crazy. If he didn’t know Vista was about to slip again, then Microsoft is in worse shape than anyone realizes,” Lyons writes. “Given Microsoft’s delays I can’t believe open-source stuff still hasn’t caught on for desktop computers… Why not at least switch to an Apple Computer Mac? Apple’s new operating system is stable, reliable and easy to use. The applications are simple, gorgeous and work well together. And they’re here. Today. Steve Jobs must be waking up a happy man this morning.”

MacDailyNews Take: “At least” switch to an Apple Mac? Versus open source alternatives, Mac OS X offers the personal computer user much, much more. The vast majority of people who use personal computers would be far better off with an Apple Mac than any other personal computer.

You can either come up with fancy slogans about being “people ready” or you can BE people ready.
Which do you think Microsoft is?
Which do you think Apple is?
So when is this 10.5 Leopard or what ever its going to be called supposed to come out????
May be Steve called Bill up:
Hey Bill, I hear you are thinking about buying Palm, so you can rename BeOS into Vista. Forget about BeOS. Why don’t you buy Apple and bring me in as an advisor to MS instead. Then you can base next Windows on a really stable and secure Next/BSD OS. You don’t even have to concern yourself about backward compatibility either. We got this nifty software based on Darwin, that let people run any Windows applications. Yes, Bill it runs MS Office for Windows without any problem. We even have a server running Exchange server on it.
Macdude, I’m with you 99%, but saying Macs are “entry level” is completely wrong. If you mean that they are user friendly and are very intuitive to use, then I’m with ya.
You’re wrong about them being “entry level” if you mean that Windows PCs are for those who aren’t “entry level” computer users. I mean crap, I do plenty of programming at my day job, and am the defacto tech support for friends and family and hope I’m not considered an “entry level” user. But I use Macs at home, Windows at work, and I’d recommend a Mac to anyone I run into over Windows anyday. It’d make my life easier!
So when is this 10.5 Leopard or what ever its going to be called supposed to come out????

a month before vista..
operation ‘pull+rug+from+under+redmond’
2009
mike:
Actually pull+rug+from+under+redmond is scheduled to be fall of 2006. If Micro$oftie is scheduled to now ship Vista in 2007, it is WAY sooner than a month ahead of Vista.

The crows are back.
I got the sh!t pecked outta me as I walked to the 7-Elevn for lunch.
Holy sh!t that hurts.
Also, I need to lose my cherry soon. Being 37 AND a bad spellr AND a virgin is just to much.
Macs wont help me do that. Loose my c herry I mean.
Girrls hate Macs.
Can you guys help a dork brother out? I need some tips.
So again I ask you fanboiz, “Why do crows attack me when I walk to the store?”
MacDude: try deodorant.
This is indeed great news. It’s definitely an opportunity Apple shouldn’t miss. Tiger already is far ahead of Microsoft’s Vista, Leopard will set new standards even before Vista comes out.
Somewhere in a very dark corner of my heart, I think MS’s copycats are simply waiting to copy some of 10.5’s features.
This reminds me in some way to the fall of the Roman Empire – in computing ages.
“Apple’s new operating system is stable, reliable and easy to use.”
Stable? Reliable? I should say so; the last time I restarted my laptop after donwloading OS 10.4.3, I said to myself “Let’s see how much uptime I can get before I have to restart”. That was 136 days ago. The only thing that has kept my other Macs from being up the same length of time is when the washing machine blew up on Christmas Eve and tripped the power supply to the whole house. They’ve been up and running since then though, all on 10.3.9.

The fact that the study was done in Berkeley completely nullifies the results.
And I am not a conservative, although I am not sure why you care so much. Typical type of dribble from a liberal such as yourself.
Keep Suckin’!
I love Apple and my Macs. That is why I don’t want Apple to get to big. Being number two has its advantages. I don’t want everybody to own a Mac. Maybe I’m a little sick but I like being a minority. I like to see Windoze users suffer and complain. I also use Windoze sometimes and I like it just like I like jalapeno peppers sometimes but not everyday.
MW=gone. Guess like is my mind gone?
sorry to to have hurt ur feelings. go back to playing w urself, it’ll be ok

I can’t believe Microsoft actually held this big nonevent “event” only a few days before announcing another screw-up in Vista. If Ballmer knew he was about to announce a delay and still had this event, he’s crazy. If he didn’t know Vista was about to slip again, then Microsoft is in worse shape than anyone realizes
You got to love Ballmer , he has no shame
Strike the iron, Steve! Strike it!!!
It’s official, MacDude needs a girlfriend. Desparately. Or, mybe someone could loan him some money for a new tube of lubricant?
The Bottom Line:
1. The nails are going firmly through the lid of the coffin marked Microsoft. At least half the nails have apple shaped heads.
2. No war was won overnight, and MS Windows is a pretty big ship to sink. But I can’t remember when it last won acclaim. But daily we see it treated with contempt, both from inside and outside the company.
3. The leaders and thinkers in IT are opening their eyes to OSX, and after the watershed the vast flocks will follow just as the sun is sure to rise tomorrow.
Go Apple! Persevere and the you will have the world in your palm… joining the cajones of Gates, Ballmer and Alchim which are already there.
Microsoft desparately needs zen training. They seem inacpable of understanding that less is often more.
We keep asking ourselves why Apple doesn’t advertise OSX (whick is probably a deal that was struck with M$), but why do I not see Linux advertised?
MDN should hold a best caption competition for the Forbes picture of Ballmer. Mine would be:
The Bratwurst was excellent, but you should’a seen the size of the Blutwurst!!
