Fastest Apple G5 Power Macs versus fastest Windows PCs

Bare Feats has posted various test results comparing “CPU Crunching” for a Dual G5/2.5GHz Power Mac vs. Dual G5/2.0GHz Power Mac vs. Dual Xeon 3.4GHz vs. Pentium 4 3GHz vs. 64 bit Athlon 2.2GHz = 3GB of 333MHz DDR which shows that the top G5 Power Mac (dual 2.5GHz) won every CPU intensive test except one.

Test results here.

Bare Feats explains, “Though the G5 Power Macs did well in the CPU tests, they were pretty much ‘smoked’ in the 3D GRAPHICS tests. Part of it as to do with how much effort developers put into optimizing (or re-writing) the game code to take advantage of the unique features of the G5 Power Macs. Quake 3 Arena, though considered obsolete by avid gamers, is a perfect example of the potential of the G5 Power Macs to excel in gaming.”

  1. “pc and mac owner”

Why use both? Maya? After Effects? They’re crap.

yellowmustard is right. And you are simply transparent. Look for justification of your poor choice to use a PC elsewhere and don’t bother with the silly charade.

“We have macs and pcs.” Whatever, loser.

  2. Isn´t it interesting that the Mac seems to fail in this test of games and all the Macaddicts jump on it, trying to put down the gaming activity.
You guys don´t have any games on your macs???
    I do.
    Including World of Warcraft.

Next someone will show that Photoshop works better on a PC and these same people will be saying, “who uses a Mac for graphics?”.

The mac should be the tops in every use of the computer.
That should be the goal and the rule.

  3. pc and mac owner: “if you don´t own and work with them both you can´t talk.”

    I don’t recall saying I didn’t.

We utilize both Macs and PCs as well. The bookkeeping department uses Dells and we in the graphics department use G5s.

The only difference is we make the money, and they count it for us. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  4. amazed:

It’s the software, stupid. Read the posts above AND the article.

You can build the best car in the world, but if you put a shitty driver, shitty gas, and shitty tires on it… it will perform like shit.

Lesson: PowerPC (RISC) and x86 (CISC) are different architectures. Do you actually know anything at all?

  5. ron: Only losers retire. And real big losers retire early. You sold out.
    We work until we drop.
Work is our life. Being creative is our life.
We use any and every tool to make our work better.
    We use Macs and PCs.

You can sit in your rocker or take your annual trip to Vegas and Hawaii.

See you at the movies. You´ll probably be seeing our work in it.
While you are retired, we are trying to make creative greatness and history – with our Macs and PCs.

And into the gutter we go!

I don’t have to create for money now that I have more than enough loot to last me and mine. I create what I want, when I want, for who I want. Brilliant!

  8. yellowmattercustard: smalltown newspaper graphic artist, correct?

Start your own company, pay your own bills like me and my partners.
    Be better, strive for greatness.

Our bookkeeping department uses Macs, too bad you can only afford Dells in yours…

  9. “ron: Only losers retire. And real big losers retire early. You sold out.
We work until we drop”… (more misc drivel by pc and mac owner)

Yeah, you’ll work till you drop because you’re wasting your time on PCs. Hopefully you’ll drop early… for your sake.

  10. ron: “I create what I want, when I want, for who I want.”

Like you just made up all that – very creative.

Hey, ron, you said you are retired. Did you forget that?

    “Loot”?
What did you do, rob a bank?

  11. duh: “Yeah, you’ll work till you drop because you’re wasting your time on PCs. Hopefully you’ll drop early… for your sake.”

    You haven´t a clue, duh.
Someday you can afford both platforms and….
nah, you´ll never be able to afford two computers.

I’m only retired from HAVING to make money. I create art every day.
Brilliant, have a Guinness! No games tho’.

Oh good. Thanks for bringing things down a notch. Classy.

We operate a small town graphic design firm but it’s nothing remotely as dinky as a damn newspaper outfit. And you suggest me starting my own company? How very realistic. Great argument! Are you here to discuss the article or stroke your ego?

And cost has nothing to do with their decision to use Dells for the bookkeeping department… it was a necessity due to the software chosen. PC-only garbage.

But please, go on… I seek further knowledge and enlightenment from you. What was your name again?

  14. To all you people that don´t own peecees:
We have them both in our company.
    Macs work great and
    the PeeCees work great.

We have no problems with either. Both are effective platforms for us. We have the Macs and PCs running fulltime and have no problems with either. We waste no more time on the PeeCess as with the Macs.

And they are all on a network together and work just fine.

Sorry to ruin your day with this PeeCess work fine for us news.
Our computers bring us money, I bought them for our company. If they did not work I would dump them.

  15. Many of my clients have in the past attempted to justify their problems by seeking camaraderie in on-line communities. Clearly the same is happening here. The anti-social game addicts and remorseful PC owners are stalking a Macintosh news site in search of some sort of validation.

This really is an agonizing ordeal for a professional to observe. You gamers and PC drones need help to get through your issues.

(PS – My office uses only Macs. That way we don’t have to waste our time or our money on technical support, anti-virus, anti-spy, anti-malware software and constant upgrades to the laughable Windows OS.)

  16. I work for a major CAD software company. We will port anything to any OS/Hardware (Mac OS X/G5) if a company (Apple) will front the money for the port so we don’t waste our time…which is on the order of anywhere from $250,000 to $500,000. I still am not sure why Apple doesn’t do this because I seriously doubt that we are the only CAD company that has such a program in place for new ports.

Magic word is “hands”, as in “It’s all in Apple’s hands now.”

Yellowmattercustard, why are you putting down people like me that work at small newspapers?

Thanks for bringing things down a notch. Classy.

Yellowmattercustard – “And cost has nothing to do with their decision to use Dells for the bookkeeping department… it was a necessity due to the software chosen. PC-only garbage.”

And yet that PC-only garbage bookkeeping software is able to make sure your customers get billed and you get a paycheck every month….

Well, there you have it. I’ve read no clearer LIE on MDN. Ever. You are one funny dude.

Now I realize you’re being sarcastic. The rest of your posts are much funnier since I now know you are JOKING.

    Ha! That’s a good one!

  19. Therapist: “This really is an agonizing ordeal for a professional to observe.”

What a dweeb. Did you have to look up “therapist” in a dictionary to see how to spell it?
High School starts at 8 am. Be there or be tardy.

    – “not Therapist”

Lashing out is a natural response. I’m sorry to see that you took my earnest comment with such hostility. Hopefully your high school has a qualified counselor that can help you with your anger issues.

  21. I suggest that the “not…” poster and this delusional “pc and mac owner” send me an email right away. Any more time lost in starting your course of counseling could have long-term negative repercussions. I really don’t know if you should be operating in the real world without supervision and multiple sedatives.

  22. Yes. I was putting down you personally, you brave, brave newspaper worker. How convenient for you to show up right when you did! Why, you’d think you were an alias!

And the billing thing… give me a break. It was something our company had done by hand for thirty years. How it’s done is not important. But without the work we produce, there would be NOTHING to bill out. Business 101.
