Fastest Apple G5 Power Macs versus fastest Windows PCs

Bare Feats has posted various test results comparing “CPU Crunching” for a Dual G5/2.5GHz Power Mac vs. Dual G5/2.0GHz Power Mac vs. Dual Xeon 3.4GHz vs. Pentium 4 3GHz vs. 64 bit Athlon 2.2GHz = 3GB of 333MHz DDR which shows that the top G5 Power Mac (dual 2.5GHz) won every CPU intensive test except one.

Bare Feats explains, “Though the G5 Power Macs did well in the CPU tests, they were pretty much ‘smoked’ in the 3D GRAPHICS tests. Part of it as to do with how much effort developers put into optimizing (or re-writing) the game code to take advantage of the unique features of the G5 Power Macs. Quake 3 Arena, though considered obsolete by avid gamers, is a perfect example of the potential of the G5 Power Macs to excel in gaming.”

  1. “…living in the Mac-only fog”

Actually it’s a fine mist. No, seriously, I do have Wintel boxes and Macs… which is why I can competently call a spade a spade and you a liar.

  2. Yes, I am your high school couselor and therapist and weren´t you in my office again last Tuesday for another one of your exposing yourself in the girl´s locker room situations of yours and screaming to the girls “Want to see my big Mac?”

And when I told you to keep it in your pants you responded: “Lashing out is a natural response.”

See you in school next week, don´t be late!

  3. now thats funny: “I do have Wintel boxes and Macs… which is why I can competently call a spade a spade and you a liar.”

No, what it means is you have no clue how to operate and maintain your computers. (Tip: quit going to the porn and gambling sites and getting all the adware in your peecee.)

Why do you keep the Wintel boxes if they don´t work?
    Hypocrite.

It is amazing how many Mac chest thumpers actually own Windows computers. Why keep them?

  4. I’m distressed by the escalating outbursts by this “not…” anonymous poster. Why are you so hostile when my comments have been made in earnest?

Again, please feel free to email me. My email was entered into the feedback portion of this site, so you should be able to send me an email by clicking on my name.

Look, whether or not your secondary school offers appropriate resources for you to deal with your emotional issues isn’t the point now. I think you should seek immediate help even if it is outside the confines of your education system.

  5. I find it odd that no one has raised the point that the choice of x86 machines for the test stacks the odds in Apple’s favour.

To claim that a P4 3GHz or Athlon 64 3500+ are the ‘fastest PCs’ is clearly false. Both Intel and AMD make considerably faster processors than the ones used in the test. Additionally, there was no AMD multiprocessor configuration which would have levelled the playing field.

Finally, the memory set up on the Athlon 64 would not have allowed it to run at it’s true potential. Why was DDR333 memory used? And why put 3GB in the machine? Since this would prevent the memory from running in dual channel mode (assuming the chip was socket 939 which I believe all 3500+’s are)

  6. We have Wintel boxes and Macs because we’re in the very lucrative business of providing IT support to companies stupid enough to use Windows as the backbone of their IT infrastructure.

Yes, we are raking it in hand over fist.

  7. A fake 2pc and mac owner” wrote: “You got me. So what? I was spouting a fountain of shit. I was just tired of people putting down my gaming world. Zandar will be pleased.”

I did not write that. That is some Mac owner that has to cheat and use someone elses name to stay in the discussion.

    Who is Zandar?

  8. Yahoo! I won.
You know you have won in these discussions when somebody starts impersonating your name.

    And keeps referencing Zandar.
    Who ever that is.

    Bye-Bye.
    See you in the movies.

  9. Wow. traffic died down with the “pc and mac owner” imbecile left. I guess he was posting as “no…” too.

In a way, I’m sorry to see the loser go. That shit was funny.

  10. It’s time for Apple to go shopping. They have enough cash and enough market cap to buy Electronic Arts and it would make sense for a number of reasons.
1- It would make the stock LESS dependent upon Macintosh hardware and software sales. One of the things that Wall St likes about the success of the iPod and iTunes is that it makes Apple’s profit base less volitile. Owning a gaming company would add to that.
2- It would assure a steady flow of top-grade games to the Macintosh platform, which could drive sales of Macs in the home market.
3- It would buy Apple a stable of top-flight programmers, that can also be used for other projects.
4- It would get and hold the attention of ATI and NVidia. That’s Mr. Jobs, Sir- to you.
5- It would also be a great big poke in the eye to Sony and Micro$oftopoly.

  11. The reason that most games run faster on Windows is that most developers prefer to use Direct 3D, a Microsoft propriety application programming interface or API, to communicate with the graphics card. Direct 3D, strange as it may seem, is optimized to work best with Microsofts Operating Systems.

Games written using the industry standard, OpenGL, performs just as well or better on a Mac.

With Windows at 98% of the market most developers haven’t seen a need to switch; the money isn’t there.

Now if Apple adopts IBM’s Power Cell processor, rumored to run 10 times faster than anything presently being sold, the tables could turn and turn fast. How many Windows users would switch to a Mac if the Mac ran 5 or 10 times faster than anything they could run Windows on?

  12. Apple should take matters into their own hands like they did with iLife. They only have to produce ONE game that is the ultimate and starts out only running on the Mac to have tons of gamers have to get a Mac to play THE game. We all know Apple could do it and god knows they have enough cash to fund it. And as the Quake 3 tests showed if optimized properly the G5 is a superior processor for gaming.

They could port the game to windows after a year or so and have it run “acceptably” to rake in more cash to fund further development. Of course by that time the new version will be out – again Mac only for the time being.

Once you get a significant number of gamers on the Mac, the other game developers will start paying more attention to optimizing for the Mac in their development and ports.

Come on Apple! You took away the price argument with the Mac mini, now tackle the final hurdle – gaming.

  13. So. The PC is faster at games. Well whoop-de-fricken-do.

How fast can a pc encode a FCP video into DVD? If I have 10 apps open at the same time, can I switch back and forth without taking a penalty hit in performance? How about those processor intensive Photoshop filters? Are these things important to the people who buy their PCs to play games? Didn’t think so.

Games are boring when you reach a certain age and getting your work done becomes far more important. That’s why I use a Mac.

  14. The PC’s advantage in raw clock speed is nullified by the time wasted with various Windows issues. A PC user might take a fraction of a second less to perform a given task, but will waste minutes or even hours sorting out spyware or just grappling with the GUI.

Secret word: “parts”, as in the processor isn’t the only one that counts.

  15. I really used to get a kick (and useful information) out of these comments after MDN articles. In the last few weeks, the quality and maturity of postings have taken a severe nosedive. Now it’s all namecalling and stupidity. So, this is the last time I’ll read comments on MDN. See you later. And thanks, those of you who gave useful information and insights in the old days. I’m sad that your contributions got overwhelmed by a tidal wave of crap.

By the way, since this is the last time I’ll read comments, I won’t see the idiotic and immature responses that this post will get. Can’t say I regret that.
