RUMOR: Apple to release new PowerBook G4s this week

“Apple will be releasing new PowerBook G4s this week. All have faster processors, and the top models also have the new video chip option with up to 128MB VRAM (could it be the Mobility Radeon 9700?). Hard drives will be faster and larger. The Aluminum form factor will remain the same,” Jason D. O’Grady reports for O’Grady’s PowerPage.

O’Grady reports, “There will be one more update to the Aluminum PowerBook G4 after this one before the PowerBook G5 is announced. There will be no dual processor PowerBook G4s as originally speculated in these pages.”

Thanks, Apple, for clearing up what I’m doing with the tax refund check I just got. Looks like its remodelling the bathroom after all….

I’m glad iPods are selling, because the last piece of hardware Apple has announced that wasn’t a disappointing piece of shit was the G5 towers. And no, I don’t consider an unexpandable G4 iMac with a crap graphics card inspiring just becaue the monitor is big.

  2. It’s been really quiet on the hardware front, except the MINI. I hope at the WWDC, they unleash numerous hardware upgrades all at once and make it a summer to remember. A PBook G5, rumored multimedia appliance, upgraded cinema displays, new iPods……I can’t wait.

Just counting down to WWDC…tick tick tick.

  3. Mac User — okay, Mac User, you *so* got me. I stand corrected.

However, I just checked and my name doesn’t start with “University of” or end with “Inc.” and I have had no success being declared a state or federal agency, so I’m sticking with the disappointing piece of shit line, thanks.

  4. All Macs will be G5s or better by mid ’05. This will make the transition to a 64-bit OS easier for Apple as they will not need to make 2 versions of the OS, 64-bit, and non 64-bit. I think Apple will state the min sys req to G5 for 10.5, and G4, G3 users will be S.O.L.

This WILL make people mad I am sure, but it will help Apple sell more Macs after people see the difference a 64-bit OS should (I say should because I have not seen it yet) make.

-The Dude…. quite possibly the laziest man world-wide.

  5. Okay, one rumor says PBG5 in like three months and a rumor that has updated G4s this week. Why buy this week when one can wait a few months and get a far superior (in theory) machine?

  6. Geez! Some of you folks are in serious need of a reality check. Considering all the marvelous things one can do with just about any Mac these days, your attitude, my dear Sam, is truly ridiculous. Peace.

  7. what a stupid release.. come here MOTO. kiss my ass.. thanks for lagging the entire company for the last 5 years.. no seriously.. come here.. *drops pants.. GIVE IT A KISS MOTO!!!

  8. I think Sam was angry at G5 Xserves – which along with the iPod mini didn’t do much for Apple home buyers.

As nice as the current mac’s really are – they are lagging pretty hard on the heels of PC portable makers.

I don’t want much – just to see a PowerBook that can keep up with my son’s Thinkpad T41p

  9. Geez, the G5 desktop hasn’t been around that long. It’d be a bit of time before it comes out in the Powerbook. Just hold your pants and get back to work. And you guys hollering about how much faster your Thinkpad or other is… it’s not all about speed, it’s what the Mac can do for us. You whiners can just pick up your Windopes toys and go on home.

  10. please breathing fire – the 1.7 GHZ Pentium M in that T41p – and the 128 meg video card it packs makes short work of *anything* in Apples PowerBook line.

We’re a multi-computer household and our Apples have been lagging behind the PC’s for a while now.

    Heh… 0 for 2004 … that’s pretty good.

  11. I know exactly what my mac can do for me – but as a consumer I’d like to see a faster Mac as our PC’s seem to get the same thing done in better time.

You dopes that seem to believe that it’s okay for Apple to both demand a premium price for warmed over hardware *and* beat up on users that try to push them to perform can go suck eggs.

I will agree that it’s *not* all about speed. My iBook has amazing uptime compared to any PC in the house. But at some point – you start to lose ground. All I want is a system that isn’t using the same sorry ass 1GHZ and a sneeze processor that has been around for almost 2 years.
