Apple offers .Mac renewals a choice of free gifts

Apple is offering .Mac members special renewal gifts. In an email to members, The .Mac Team state:

“Thank you for being a part of the first year of .Mac! For a limited time, we invite you to choose one of the great free gifts listed below to be sent to you after your .Mac membership renews… “

  1. If anyone is listening at Apple:
I have not renewed my .mac yet, but will shortly. However, how about a different premium like 20 free downloads at the ITMS? I couldn’t give a rat’s a** about the Sims or EverQuest.

  2. A certain number of free iTMS downloads might make the .Mac service a little more attractive to many others, but only barely for me as I presently pay nothing for an extremely reliable 56k dialup from home (provided for free by my employer). What possible reason is there to having a .Mac account when using a 56k dialup? (A somewhat rhretorical question, but like last time this topic came up I’ll still read any attempts to convince me).

I’ll more than likely wait until I can get a reasonably priced DSL or cable connection at home and don’t have to wait forever for downloads to complete.

  3. When it’s time for me to renew my membership I hope they have SOME kind of promotion. Just throw me a bone of some kind but no matter what I’ll renew. I, like a lot of people, like free stuff!
    😀

  4. I have no interest in the games being offered and $20 at the AppleStore doesn’t do too much for me either. I’m probably going to let .Mac go as $100 is too much for what I get considering the email problems of last year. Webspace is also much cheaper elsewhere and I don’t need the synch feature.

Now if they gave 20 or 30 tracks at ITMS I might get interested

  5. I never could take advantage of the 1st premium they offered… the 100 free pictures. The server was always busy, unreachable.

iTMS downloads would be a better carrot. Or at least let the $20 be applied to the iTMS, as well as the Store.

  6. Hey, newsflash to those that don’t want the incentive to renew.

Make a decision as to whether or not renewing is worth it to you based on what you pay for and what you receive for that payment. If you don’t want the premium, shut up. Quit whining about someone trying to give something away to incent renewal.

People in general need to just quit thinking that everything should be customized to their specific situation and need. It’s a general promotion designed to attract the greatest interest from the largest audience.

  7. These promotions are worthless. They are outdated games that I don’t have time for. I like the idea of iTMS downloads. That would be enticing. The games won’t be enough to convince me to stay with .mac. Not for $99. I didn’t find it to be worth the money. Especially after the mail problems of the last year. With those problems, you would think that Apple would give us an extra 6 months or something.

  8. I agree with the idea of having a premium that’s applicable to the iTMS. (Heck, even $10 instead of $20 would be nice!) If I do renew, I’ll probably use the Apple Store premium to buy the pro version of QuickTime (and hope they don’t come out with a new pay-for upgrade too soon).

  9. I have noticed where Apple gives new Mac buyers a discount on the first year of .Mac.

How about giving the same deal to existing .Mac account holders if they buy a new mac during the year. Allowing them to extend their .mac account for 12 months at the new purchase price.

  10. Are you people morons or what? When will you understand that .Mac should be worth the money or don’t buy it. No one is forcing you to renew if you don’t want to. If the offers aren’t enticing enough and the value isn’t there for you, don’t renew. End of story. Quit whining about what offer would really make you renew. If the value isn’t there, move along.

How dumb is it to wish that Apple would give everyone a continual discount on .Mac? Remember, they’re in business to make money, not give things away at a lower cost or below cost just to satisfy some idiot’s view of what is owed him or her.

    End of rant.

  11. not morons- people do get value from their .Mac accounts. Its just that $99 is stretching it a bit. The $20 in downloads at the ITMS would add just enough value to make it almost a no brainer.

  12. Um, how about the fact that right now ( and until the end of October) you can get free a very, very useful $40 utility called Sticky Brain. I downlaoded it, doubtful that it was really worth $40. It’s worth every penny!

So download Sticky Brain and .Mac becomes $60. Download the Virus program, a few other things that will be free throughout the year and in the end, it’s a bargain. Plus you get 100 megs of space, a place to post pictures and movies fast, and all the other things that .Mac has.

And doesn’t ITMS bill through the Apple store? That’s where my recipts come from for my downloads. Maybe we CAN apply the $20 gift certificate for the store to that. But I’m not going to. I’m going to apply it to purchasing Rainbow Six – Raven Shield! 😀

If you have .Mac now, get Stickybrain and give it a try. I love it! I’ll pay for the upgrade some day too. It’s that good.

As ISPs come and go (I’ve had to change my main email address five times in four years because of consolidation and bankruptcy in the broadband market) my .Mac email address remains, and people know how to get ahold of me, even if .mac isn’t their normal way to contact me.

  13. I would prefer regular deals/discounts on Apple product as a .mac customer. 10 percent off on any Apple Apps or accessories say Soundtrack, Panther, Wireless mouse or iSight would add up nicely and encourage me to send my money Apples way. Adding more to .mac would be nice as well, including stability. I like the contest they had with iMovie and the free iPods. So more .mac contest please. OK, this is just a wish list. I am going to renew again anyway. My .mac sights full and I use it regularly. The games and $20 bucks are a nice gesture but not a closer.

  14. I just renewed my .Mac account. $99 seems like a lot, but you have to remember, it’s only a once a year charge. I find most people to be rather dumb, $99/year is a lot more than $8/month. It’s like those cheesy infommercials that don’t charge $150 for a product, they charge 3 EASY payments of $49.99 instead. And of course, THEN people think it’s a great deal. It’s a con. Apple is not playing it right.

Anyway, I try and get as much use out of my .Mac account as possible. Lately it hasn’t been much, but I still find it to be worth $99/year, and besides, it’s another way I can show my support for my favorite company. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  15. Let’s see: we’ve got cheerleaders and naysayers. Creating a lot of bad will on both sides, Cupertino. Why not wise up, Apple, and offer

    * * * * TIERED PRICING * * * *

so that users can choose the amount of services they want and not feel ripped off. Me, I’d like access to some of .mac’s services, but my ISP offers much more disk space for less. Others are in the opposite boat. And would a pass-through address-only service be too goddam difficult? People would pay for it, see?

Apple forgets that when costs are basically fixed, the name of the game becomes “revenue”. Tiered pricing is the best approach.
