Apple iPhone 4S smashes record with over one million pre-orders in first 24 hours

Apple today announced pre-orders of its iPhone 4S have topped one million in a single day, surpassing the previous single day pre-order record of 600,000 held by iPhone 4. iPhone 4S is the most amazing iPhone yet, packed with incredible new features including Apple’s dual-core A5 chip for blazing fast performance and stunning graphics; an all new camera with advanced optics; full 1080p HD resolution video recording; and Siri, an intelligent assistant that helps you get things done just by asking.

“We are blown away with the incredible customer response to iPhone 4S,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, in the press release. “The first day pre-orders for iPhone 4S have been the most for any new product that Apple has ever launched and we are thrilled that customers love iPhone 4S as much as we do.”

        1. Apple was never about changing iPhone design every year. They did iPhone 1,2,3 with basically the same design.

Also, Apple protected iPhone 4 buyers’ investment — they did not make the pricey phone all of sudden yesterday’s design buy pushing all of sudden new one just after one phone release.

    1. Is it Friday yet? This is my first preorder … no waiting in lines like the other 4 times! Does Apple use FedEx for these deliveries? If you ordered directly from Verizon, does Apple still do the shipping? FedEx comes to my house early in the, UPS in the evening … I’m hoping FedEx!

      1. S Balmy, Relax. It’s okay. Yes, Apple usually uses FedEx for shipping. At least in my area. 🙂

If you’re lucky, you might even get it a day early! 🙂 that’s happened to several people here, before 🙂

      2. I have ordered three iPads and my iPhone 4 from Apple and all were flown from China by FedEx for the order — and all arrived at least one day earlier than promised. FedEx is much better then UPS for shipments like this because you can sign a shipment authorization form to have the package left in a secure place should you not be home.
And get this, fellow Apple crazies: there is an app called LiveATC that lets you listen in on airport air traffic control communications. While checking the tracking for my iPhone 4 I saw that the flight had just left Anchorage. A couple hours later I checked KPDX on LiveATC and damned if I didn’t hear the freighter being cleared for landing. Sure enough, in minutes the tracking showed the phone checked in. It delivered that afternoon. Yeah, I am batshit crazy, but I bet Steve would approve. Two iPhone 4Ses are on order. Just trying to do my part.

  1. I lol’d at the Bloodbath take 🙂

Also, it’s a good thing they didn’t release the iPhone 5. It would have been so great that the universe would have exploded. and we absolutely can’t have that before 2012 😉

Congrats Apple, and Tim Cook for a successful launch 🙂 And Steve, if you’re watching, I hope you approve. We miss you.

  2. Do I start camping Wednesday night or Thursday night? Only question left.

Partner is flying early to WashDC Saturday and wants to take a working 4S. Apple phone lady originally told me not to preorder because there was no guarantee the phones would come Friday for sure. So it’s the Store (shrine) camp-out.

Both on the 3GS so this will be a rock the socks upgrade!

  3. Well it’s 1,000,000 1… my contract expires in December and I will most definitely be getting a 64GB Black iPhone 4Steve (it’s what I’m calling mine)

Thanks SJ, thanks for everything. X

  4. 1. Apple iPhone 4 is the number one selling smartphone even though it is 18 months old
    2. iPhone 3GS is the number two selling smartphone even though it is antediluvian at this point.

Apple did not need a shiny new design to sell more cell phones. It simply needed to make more phones and have the option to sell its phones to any telco in any country.

The iPhone 4S allows Apple to manufacture one phone and sell it anywhere.

And once people actually see how Siri, iOS 5 and iCloud work together, the demand will increase exponentially.

  5. I’m one in a million 😉

I guess it tells us one thing. Apple have ramped up about 1M phones prior to the release. They appear to be shipping directly from China so looks like minimal stock in the US. That makes sense in a way because Apple don’t know the mix for demand in the first set of countries and can manage the workflow more efficiently.
My phone is still “preparing for shipment”. I wish the shipping was by FedEx and not UPS. It is a lot harder to get a shipment from UPS if you’re not home to receive it.

  6. I knew I was gonna get one. I just hesitated on day one. Sitting there with “Delivered by October 14th” line on the screen, I froze. Dummy!

Finally pulled the trigger last night. My black 32 GB 4S is on the way. “Delivers Oct. 24 – Oct. 31”. It usually comes a wee early but I shouldn’t have doubted myself. (I guess I was also trying to decide between the 32 and 64, but still no excuse!!!) at least I don’t have to wait in line.

  7. Judas Priest, what the hell has New Zealand done to offend Apple so? I visit Latvia often and it’s one of the poorest countries around. I doubt that there are more than a handful who could afford to buy an iPhone 4S yet there they are, named above in the country list, while New Zealand is again ignored. No Apple store, not even an official presence called Apple in New Zealand, a fully-deveopled country with tens of thousands of Apple supporters and customers.

Could it be because Apple took a very big amount of money from my credit card after someone stole my identity then totally ignored me when I emailed, telephoned and even wrote hard copy letters? And, after being totally ignored, I complain in here about the shameful lack of any response? Probably not, so why are we as a country treated so shabbily over the years?

  8. I’m too lazy to go to back and look, but after the iPhone 4S launch event, didn’t MDN predict there wouldn’t be lines for this one?

You might want to re-think this one, guys.

    Ordered mine from Verizon yesterday.

  9. I’m happy too. I also recall those other folks who couldn’t shut up about the 4S being a disappointment, Apple shares were going to fall, Tim Cook’s presentation, etc, etc.

Someone who has stuck with Apple even during the dark ages, I say, “Hooray!”

  10. And this doesn’t even include sales of the 3GS (for free at AT&T) and 4 (for $99 at ALL 3 U.S. carriers). That is no doubt huge as well!

BTW, my cousins bought 2 3GSes the day of the 4S announcement at Walmart for $45 or something. I told them to go bargain with them for the $0 price, but I think they’re just letting it go. But it does go to prove that the older models are still relatively popular. The price point has been killer at $50. I know several people for whim that was too good to resist. AND NOW THAT MODEL IS FREE!!! and the iPhone 4 is just $100?!? I would nit be surprised to see huge numbers of these models too.
