Apple sells out initial iPhone 4S stock

“Despite the general sense of disappointment after Apple announced the iPhone 4S on Tuesday, people preordered the smartphone in droves on its first day of availability,” Eric Zeman reports for InformationWeek.

“Apple and U.S. carrier partners AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon Wireless all began accepting preorders for the iPhone 4S at 12:01AM Pacific time on Friday, October 7,” Zeman reports. “AT&T’s online store was overwhelmed instantly, and many consumers complained of difficulty placing orders for several hours. By noon on Friday, AT&T said that more than 200,000 preorders were placed for the iPhone 4S. AT&T said Apple’s latest smartphone was seeing ‘extraordinary demand.'”

Zeman reports, “The iPhone 4S was also available directly from Apple’s Web store. Throughout the day on Friday, Apple indicated that the iPhone 4S would be delivered to those ordering it on Friday, October 14. initial stock available to first-day buyers. Apple didn’t say how many devices had be preordered through its site.”

  1. Hey, this iPhone 4s is terrible. No anti-gravity, no teleportation, it really sucks……. and I am really pissed. I tried to order one all day and they are sold out.

Man, I hate Apple. How could they do this to me. Now I will have to wait with everyone else…. Crap. Apple sucks…

OK, for those that do not know, the above was meant to be funny. Have a nice weekend. 🙂

    1. I couldn’t order one through apple.com, the Apple Store app, or 1-800-MYAPPLE. Around 9:30PM yesterday, I placed an order for a black 64GB iPhone 4S (“S” stands for “Steve”) on Verizon’s website. It is due to arrive by October 14th, 2011. I don’t think Verizon sold out of them, or at least not until very late yesterday … or I’m going to be VERY displeased next Friday!

    2. As I said from very beginning, “general sense of disappointment” is tornado in a glass. (Id est totally irrelevant to actual people, who never expected “iPhone 5”, nor they care about the name much, nor they read all of these tech blogs and hype themselves up as we do.)

      1. Yeah there is not “general sense of disappointment” it was just a few loud angry geeks and corporate shills for competing companies who were making all the noise about how disappointing they thought it was. Everyone who actually looked at the specs objectively knew it was a a good phone with a few awesome features.

  2. Here is my original post from Tuesday when everyone was bitching about the iPhone 4S:

This is going to be like the iPad debut.

stage 1 – everyone is soooo disappointed – “I’m not getting one”
stage 2 – Well I goes that Siri thing is kind of cool.
stage 3 – It does have a faster process and better camera and I can get it with 64Gb
stage 4 – Well, I am eligible for an upgrade . . . may as well get one
stage 5 – (Day of pre-order) Geez, Apple, why can’t your server handle the traffic? I couldn’t get in on the preorder.
stage 6 – How come Apple can’t make enough of these to meet demand.
stage 7 – what? they are going for $2000 on eBay?
stage 8 – better get out my sleeping bag to wait in line.

Currently stages 1-5 are completed. On to stages 6-8.

    1. Excellent summary phxdoc!

I would add one more step somewhere around 5 – 7:

Stage 6A: The evil Apple marketing geniuses must be lying and creating an artificial shortage to pump up demand and kick the hype machine into overdrive. I’m sure Apple has 10 million iPhone 4Ses just sitting in warehouses somewhere next the Ark of the Covenant.

      1. 1 for Synth and phxdoc, too. While everyone else was bitching, I ordered two iPhone 4Ses, a black 16 gb for my wife and a white 16 gb for a niece. And i bet that I can sell the wife’s mint condition 3G for in excess of $100 on Craigslist. What Android phone that is the second of five generations will EVER have such a stunning resale value?

        1. Meanwhile in China, everybody get their sons, daughters, cousins, wives, grandfather, grandmother, relatives and even their newborn babies to order 5 iPhones 5S so that they could sell the phones at a higher price in the black market channel.

        2. Corrections:

Meanwhile in China, everybody get their sons, daughters, cousins, wives, grandfather, grandmother, relatives and even their newborn babies to order 5 iPhones 4S each so that they could sell the phones at a higher price in the black market channel.

    2. That’s me 😀
Not ashamed. Life has a necessary order of events to work thru.
I got the pre-order via apple.com within 5 minutes Friday morning 9 AM CST.
I think I’m safe with delivery. I imagine the black 16GB model is the least popular. Yes? Sounds like everyone here is going for the 32GB+.

    3. I told my mom about the”general sense of disappointment” and she was shocked. She couldn’t understand why anyone would be disappointed with what was released. She didn’t follow any rumors. She was able to look at the phone objectively and see how awesome it is.

  3. “Apple indicated that the iPhone 4S would be delivered to those ordering it on Friday, October 14. initial stock available to first-day buyers ”

A little confusing. Does this mean there’s no point lining up at the stores if you didn’t pre-order?

  4. Only the bloggers had “general disappointment.” They were disappointed by their own careful research and analysis, which was limited to the essential features; the case and the number.

@mossman: I think Apple means that if you preordered your iPhone on Friday, it will arrive on October 14. If you go to the Apple Store on the first day they are available, you can buy one while supplies last.

  5. @phxdoc

Stage 1: I said if it looks exactly like the 4 I wasn’t going to bother, so I’m no getting one
Stage 2: Siri does look much better than the app I have now
Stage 3: (After some research), we won’t get Siri in the iOS 5 update in the 4?
Stage 4: that camera does seem really cool
Stage 5: I have 900MB of free space on my 32 GB iPhone 4 and I can get this with 64 GBs?!
Stage 6: ordered my white 64GB iPhone 4S early Friday morning…

  6. It seems that journalism today involves no actual research. Most of these idiots simply parrot what the rest of the idiots are saying. Kind of like a literary circle-jerk.

    1. Not if you were jumping ship from AT&T to Verizon! According to the sales rep on 1-800-MYAPPLE, Apple apparently had trouble creating new accounts on Verizon (over the phone, on their website, and on the iOS app. Verizon’s website worked well, though.

  7. I still want a bigger screen. That is putting apple behind. They need a bigger screen. Yes they are selling but dang it’s time for a 4in screen already. I know many people who did not get an iPhone because of the smaller screen size.

Also why did they not do faster speeds on Verizon and sprint why just AT&T?

    1. Verizon and Sprint both run on CDMA and their cellular infrastructure isn’t easily upgradable with a software update. ATT on the other hand runs on GSM. ATT and Apple were able to update the modem firmware to a newer standard that supports high speeds.

  8. I ordered one for my wife while standing in line with my daughter for a ride at Disney World. In a magical place, I ordered a magical device. I was done before we got on the ride.

  9. Yea I know AT&T is gsm just woukd have been nice for 4G or close. Although I don’t think sprint or vz have 4G here yet.

I have 2 of those but they are a tad big to carry around as a phone.
I am really hoping for 4G next. That and it’s time apple went to 4in screen.

When iPhone 4s is jail broken I will be getting one. Not before

Love my iPad and iPad 2.

    1. So, by your own admission, 4G is nowhere near ubiquitous. Yet, Apple should have crippled the device’s battery life by putting a tecnology in it that won’t male the phone faster than it will already operate on AT&T’s network?

Do you have to remind yourself to breathe?

      Idiot.

  10. The article is misleading, though. It makes it sound like the iPhone is already sold out, but all that is sold out is the small number set aside for preorders. There will be plenty of iPhones in Apple stores and carrier stores come release day.
