It’s a noble attempt, but they don’t go far enough. The screen is smaller and the resolution is lower (128×128). The supported image file formats is very sad compared to iPod Photo.
I’m confident that direct hookup to cameras will be supported by the iPod Photo through third-party cables.

I’m wondering how the portable subscription works.
Do the songs suddenly expire on the music device after a certain amount of time or do they play until you hook it up to your computer so it can check if you still have a subscription?

What does Gateway have to lose? I don’t think Gateway has had a profitable quarter for well over two years now….it may even be longer than that. It closed all it stores earlier this year.
While news.com post doom & gloom articles about Apple and it stock value and profits continue to rise what do they say about Gateway? Well back in June of this year they had a glowing review of the company saying they were not going to lose as much money as they thought..only 85 cents per share instead of 90.
On the bright side if the don’t sell well then Gateway can always use them to bribe reviewers for glowing reviews, giving reviewers 10 to 20 units to keep after a good review, give them to employees instead of bonuses or give them as parting gifts when the company final goes under. Which will be a surprise to all of those technical experts who were waiting with baited breathe for Apple to die.
give them credit. it does have a couple of good idea. such as direct hookup to a camera to download directly into player. which the iPod did that. for $600 you would think the iPod would do that.
but it also has a couple of duds: 4G?? after adding your MP3 files you think you gonna have room to add your JPG files too????

Don’t you just love the way Apple keeps its stuff secret. Bet the copy writer for that release would love to get it back and rewrite it. Nothing better than to see these also-rans touting their junk as being better than iPod, then have iPod come out with better specs and products “before” the other guy gets out the chute. Gateway’s got to be going ballistic about now; their obsolete and beaten before they even ship the first unit.

They have a player that has the same battery life, weight, AND price as the iPod mini, but with a color screen and a direct digital camera hookup, something the iPod Photo should be embarrassed for not including…in a device with “photo” actually in the name. And this from Gateway!
It may not be as nice as the iPod, but it certainly has more than you people are giving it credit for.
on paper this thing truely is a great value…and provides a compelling solution for some. The only negative is that the software may get in the way of a truely integrated solution that apple provides (hardware & software)
the direct hook up to a digital camera sure beats hacking a unit for the HD/compact flash card….This is an AWESOME feature for serious digital SLR use…
the MP3 feature is good for those with large MP3 collections and the ACC support possibly means you can transfer all the songs in your iTunes that your ripped from your own CD’s in ACC format instead of MP3. you can not use DRM ACC files from iTunes but if you really have to buy a song, it isn’t all bad to HAVE to buy a song from Napster.
Ergonomics and cool factor will never match apple’s iPod, but functionally, this is one of the first complete solutions that I would be compelled to consider.
don’t knock it without trying it, seeing it or using it…it’s still a market of choice…blind faith in any one company’s PR is actually not “free choice”…

The Belkin Digital Camera Link is a piece of crap. Worthless. Forget it exists. Need a better solution, and Apple needs to get off their butt and come out with a flash upgrade for the iPod mini so recording plug ins can work on it.

Why with iPod NOTES isn’t lyrics and CD notes supported when music is downloaded from the iTunes store? Even transcripts from the public conventions would be nice. That is what I would call added value. Then the digital music download experience would definitely surpass the benefits of buying CD’s.

It could be an iPod killer but is missing one very important feature, an A/V out port. Who is going to want to view images on such a tiny screeen. Read Gateway’s on description. No mention of any other ports other than the USB data and Audio line out.
I agree that the iPod Photo should have the ability to download directly from a camera. Perhaps Apple left that open for 3rd party developers like they did recording and radio.
I think it’s safe to assume that over the next year, the whole iPod line will have color screens and photo capabilities.

Guess they couldn’t get the other members of U2 or even Ashlee Simpson … as for ‘state of the art’ – MS is not lying that it is state of the art for them … just read the Walt Mossberg WSJ review on the ipod competitors. It took him HOURS to load “music-to-go” and on others, they still would not work correctly.
That’s what people want – uglier, heavier, dumber and harder to use.

I almost feel sorry for them to spend all that time and money coming up with something that fills a gap in the market, and then have the market leader come along and release something that covers most of the same ground. It does go to show how you can’t afford to delay for even a few weeks if you want to have the latest and greatest.
I do like the USB interface though. Something for Apple to add to a G2 iPod Photo.
Go to more, shall we say, bipartisan forums, and you’ll hear Windows-dorks and Apple-hatas wonder aloud why we Macophiles get so defensive about the iPod and the iTMS. Why do we hate these other players and services so, they wonder, and why do we take such delight in their continuing display of competitive incompetence?
Simple. NONE OF THESE COMPETITORS WORK WITH THE MAC. As it stands now, iPod and iTunes’ continued dominance is the only thing preventing my platform of choice from being marginalized in yet another area.

I just love web pages that do nothing. I just don’t understand why these nitwit web designers think everyone has Flash, or everyone wants to download Flash. I go to the Apple iPod Photo page and everything works just fine. I guess these also-rans feel it’s okay to neglect small segments of their potential market. After all it’s not like they have very far to go to catch up to the iPod.
The competition is rising as I expected and Microsoft is there to provide a OS/DRM for everybody.
1: Introduce new product to market.
2: Maintain market dominance as long as possible.
3: Improve product to stay ahead.
4: Eventually lose market share due to flood of cheap copycats who don’t fund their own R&D.

The photo transfer thing is next to useless if it eats up too much battery power and/or takes too long to transfer photos.
On top of that, the screen is laughably small.
The iPod Photo is missing an important feature, I agree. Get that direct transfer of photos off of digital cameras in there PRONTO! And when I’m on vacation, I don’t want to have to carry an extra Belkin do-hicky or dongle otherwise I’d just bring a laptop. Directy transfer from cameras is pretty much the only reason I’d get an iPod Photo (and the price is high enough, thank-you).

Yeah, if it don’t work on a Mac why bother. I’ll admit I was a little shocked at the price of the new iPod so I checked out the Creative Zen. They have a 60giger, which is what I was after. Colour/photo capabilities wen’t that important to me. But alas of course the Zen isn’t mac compatable. Oh well, I think I’ll wait till this time next year when the 80gig video iPod comes out. Now thats something I wouldn’t mind paying top dollar for.

Wentworth has it right. The more inferior units come along, the better the iPod looks. At the low end of the food chain, they consume each other. They don’t take market share from Apple, but keep the whole digital music/player market buzzing along. It’s far short of saturation and can only expand. and Apple is well placed as market leader/dominator to continue in this role. It doesn’t sit back but keeps innovating. The also-rans are left in the dust because none have the “whole widget” approach for which Apple has been so often criticised. The chickens are coming home to roost on why Apple will continue to lead this market – vision, processes, innovation, marketing.

It is as cool as what the design of the new WV bug was when it was introduced a few years back. However, as cool as the re-design of the WV Bug was, it is certainly in a different class than the designs of BMW…
BTW…it is worth mentioning that the iPod Photo with the additional/costly Belkin add-on does allow photos to be uploaded to the iPod. However…you cannot view them on it! The only way they can be viewed is if they are then uploaded to the PC and downloaded again. This pretty much cuts the value of the “photo” aspect in half.
I love the color, the improved battery life, and the better screen resolution, but as far as photos go and the $100 price increase, this is disappointing.
It doesn’t seem to allow viewing the pix on a TV, as the iPod Photo does (there didn’t seem to be a video out listed in the specs). I’d also like to know how the photos are managed from a computer. The iPod Photo’s picture management via iPhoto provides the same seamless integration as music with iTunes.
The direct from camera thing is cool if you are on a trip w/o your laptop and want to store photos, but with a 1.6″ screen, I’d rather view them from my camera.
This guy sounds just like a professor I had. He was stuck in a Windows world. He kept trying to become an Apple user without using Apple products. He liked to say, if only Apple had done this or that in the past. Well prof, looks like Apple is leading the pack in every category they compete in. If only Apple’s name was Microsoft I guess.
Gateway has been run over. They are a discount broker. I wouldn’t trust thier products and I doubt people think Gateway is very cool. Dell could be a competitor, but they lack the focus to beat Apple at any particular thing.
Keep the competition coming though. Keep Apple great.
128 x 128 resolution?! That, in and of itself will make this product a complete joke for viewing photos.
My Treo 600 has a 160 x 160 screen and it is, in my opinion, completely unusable for viewing photos.
The iPod Photo as a 220 x 176 screen – over twice the resolution.
Given the price, I’ll take an iPod mini, than you very much.
all animosities aside, this product isn�t that bad:
– changeable batteries
– transfer photos directly from camera (can�t do that with ipod photo)
– “dock”-like connector at the bottom
– this feature set at this pice compared either ipod mini or ipod photo: could be a sweet spot for many,
