Apple’s AirPods may soon get a new health feature

Apple’s iOS 18 is widely expected to be announced at WWDC on June 10th and Apple’s AirPods could get a significant software update with an important new heath feature.

Lexy Savvides for CNET:

In this week’s episode of One More Thing [embedded below], I take a look at all the rumors about the upcoming AirPods, including a potential hearing aid mode that may launch with iOS 18. In the future, maybe AirPods could integrate even more sensors such as an EEG for detecting brain activity. Apple filed a patent in 2023 that shows such a sensor embedded in earbuds.

A few years ago, there were rumors of the AirPods Pro getting a heart rate and body temperature sensor. That hasn’t manifested yet, but other earbuds like the recently released Sennheiser Momentum Sport already do this. It’s genuinely helpful to have all this data consolidated in your workout app and not have to wear both a watch and earbuds when you’re working out.

There’s big potential for AirPods to further Apple’s health ambitions, especially because the earbuds are one of the most inexpensive entry points into Apple’s wearable line.

  1. I have owned 2 airpod products and both broke.
1st gen pair batteries died after a year.
They wouldnt stay in my ears anyway so i wasnt impressed when they worked.
Airpod pro lasted longer but after a few years the right airpod makes a noise in my ear.
Cleaning it would resolve for a bit but noise returned.
Had it repaired by an authorized repair shop with the repair machine apple sent them, which i think is just a cleaning machine, problem returned.
The quality of the product sucks, too expensive.

    1. Sounds like a fake comment. If they didn’t stay in your ears why did you keep them? I had the same problem with noise and had it replaced by Apple even after my warranty expired, they had a replacement program. The quality of AirPods has been excellent for me. For such a heavily used device that you sweat on and put INSIDE your body (no other Apple product is this personal) it has been great. The first-gen AirPods, which lasted for 3.5 years with daily use, were my favorite all-time Apple product other than the Mac and iPhone.

  2. I own about as many Anker/Soundcore ear “pieces” as Apple. Almost always less expensive and performance/sound, on-par. Switch-pairing is the limiting factor. Apple’s “slippery fit” has been befuddling…for yrs. “Short-life” above is a terrible sign. Apple and endurance has always been synonymous, per my experience.

  3. I have 5 or 6 different sets of AirPods. The left one on the original set did crap out; however, it had been dropped onto a hard floor a few times plus the entire package (case and both pods) went through my washer and the dryer(!!) and still worked. The right side still works today.

The right pod on a gen2 version has stopped working too but left side is okay.

The version 3 are my favorites: no silicon tips so they fit very comfortably and are more compact than any others.

The Pros hurt my right ear even with the smallest tip installed. However, they do function extremely well and are great for late night movie watching while the rest of the household are sleeping. I can’t wear them for more than 60-90 minutes tho’
