There’s a risk that the Apple Vision Pro spatial computer could end up cannibalizing the Mac line by giving plenty of users something that could replace their Mac altogether, Alex Blake writes for DigitalTrends.
Alex Blake for DigitalTrends:
Right from the word go, Apple has been busy hyping the Vision Pro’s capabilities. The company calls it a “spatial computer,” suggesting we need to completely reimagine what a computer is in the first place. The product’s sky-high $3,500 price tag and abundance of high-end materials and technologies give it an undeniably premium feel, far beyond what we’ve seen from even the best VR headsets.
At the same time, Apple has claimed that the Vision Pro will be able to do a host of tasks you’d normally perform with a laptop or desktop computer, from gaming and video calling to writing documents and browsing photos.
To be clear, Apple didn’t explicitly put the Vision Pro and the Mac head-to-head during its reveal event, nor has it ever said you can go ahead and ditch your Mac. But the comparison is obvious if you look at what both products can do.
MacDailyNews Take: The Apple Vision Pro won’t replace the Mac. The Vision Pro could replace your Mac’s display(s). Apple’s Vision Pro is a Mac on your face.

Short answer: Hell no! – No more than an iOS device can. It is a new category that can do all kinds of nifty stuff, but not that. I love my iOS devices, too, but they don’t work well trying to do many serious work tasks simultaneously and on a deadline. I just wish Apple would stop crippling the Mac OS by continuing to dumb it down to the level of iOS. Have been working professionally with computers since the 1960’s, And Apple stuff since 1984 – Lisa, Macs, iOS, iPhones, Apple TV and lots more. Apple Vision Pro will find (& define) its own niche.
Err..no?
Will the head strap come in Bondi blue?
If you have dirty thoughts, it will turn to Zune brown!
Just as the iPad was whispered about replacing the Mac, no, that is hilarious. If they attempt to do so, their business will collapse, because the rest of the industry is not that idiotic. Seriously: who is making these decisions at Apple? I doubt their Google Glass will be any more popular than the actual Google Glass, and it is so far beyond the pale of a phone being a distraction, I cannot imagine people will not eventually rebel or even sue. Whatever genius came up with this idea, and whatever genius approved it are all the testament we need to know that Apple has so tremendously lost its way. What is this company other than a ridiculous channel for ever expanding revenue?
My first thought exactly! Here we go again comparing apples and oranges…
Obviously, all prognostications are guesses at this point. Like the questions, will the car ever replace the horse, and will any automaker dethrone Ford, at one point in time most people would have answered with an emphatic “No!”
Could Vision Pro replace the Mac? A critical factor will be the software. Will developers be able to write software that will empower the end user for everyday productivity significantly beyond what a desktop computer can do? Only time and the creative genius of developers will be able to answer the question.
Steve Jobs liked to quote Henry Ford at this point. Ford said, prior to his first car, if he asked people what they needed, they’d say a faster horse.
Since it’s more geared toward media consumption it will replace the iPad, if anything.
Sky high price? You good folks in the US should visit Australia to see what Apple charges for a Mac! You can almost double the cost!
