“Another replacement Samsung Galaxy Note 7 has caught fire, this one in Houston, Texas,” Jordan Golson reports for The Verge.
“Daniel Franks was at lunch with his daughter and wife when their replacement caught fire while sitting on the table, he told The Verge in an interview. It had been replaced at a Best Buy store in late September,” Golson reports. “Franks said that his eight-year-old daughter regularly plays Minecraft on the phone and wondered what could have happened if she was holding it or it was in his pocket or sitting on a nightstand.”
“This is the (1, 2, 3, 4) fifth replacement Note 7 that has caught fire in the US in the past week that we know of,” Golson reports. “It seems likely that there are more. AT&T has stopped selling the phones entirely, while the US Consumer Product Safety Commission says it is “moving expeditiously” to investigate, though perhaps even that isn’t quickly enough… Until we get more information, the simplest explanation is the best one: the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is a fundamentally defective product and it should be pulled from the market without delay.”
This makes me wonder if there might be something about the *phone* that is causing the problem, not the batteries. Like perhaps the “fast-charing” feature?
There are several suspects apart from fast charging…
Samsung skin bloatware on top of multiple background (some unstoppable) processes…stressing the battery.
Poor in-phone power regulation when charging by either method…stressing the battery.
Poor power management generally…stressing the battery.
CPU error correction and garbage collection continuing after the phone is switched off…stressing the battery.
There’s loads more conjecture over at Ars
It all adds up to a MASSIVE failure for QC and management top to bottom.
Rest easy TC.
According to one of the articles on The Verge, the person (Shawn Minter) who had his replacement Note 4 burn up in his bedroom, went and had it replaced with another model of Samsung phone. Can that really be true? Do you trust a different model from the same manufacturer when the phone could’ve burned your house down? If you really only want Android phones, there are plenty of manufacturers to choose from.
Do you value a fake incendiary iPhone from a slavish copier or do you value the life of family members more by giving them iPhones, the real safe deal?
Don’t they also use these in Samsung VR headsets? Could you imagine if this exploded strapped to someone’s head? Man, I’m shocked nobody has died from these yet.
One only can wonder what was on the mind of the parent that Hans over grandee to his 8 yo son. Does any body in here will let his/ her son with a device from a company know for producing explosive phones?
What an incredible disaster it would be if a child were harmed playing a simple game on a phone. This must be stopped NOW.

It should be considered child abuse to give a kid a Samsung, let alone letting him use it.
