Apple’s Mac stagnation

“Most of Apple’s product lines are severely overdue for a refresh,” Joel Hruska writes for ExtremeTech. “Apart from the recently refreshed MacBook, many of the company’s Mac products are well over a year old. The Mac Mini is nearly two, the high-end workstation Mac Pro is almost three, and the sole remaining non-Retina MacBook Pro is now more than four years old.”

“Apple’s relatively lax refresh cycle is mostly driven by the low rate of improvements in PC hardware these days,” Hruska writes. “Apple is just more honest about it… Apple has held off on making fundamental platform changes precisely because it’s been waiting for the underlying technology to advance enough to make the changes worthwhile.”

Hruska writes, “I’m not an Apple apologist.”

MacDailyNews Take: Yes, you are an Apple apologist.

There is no reason for a company with $200+ billion dollars on hand to sit around with their thumbs up their asses regarding any aspect of their business, much less one that sold 4.252 million units for revenue of $5.239 billion in the last 91-day period.

  1. Yeah yeah, heard it all before. Constant whining that Apple was ignoring the Mac, wasn’t innovating, that the latest Dell was just as sexy as the MacBook, blah blah blah.

In 2012/2013 Apple released the skinny iMac, the retina MacBook Pro, the new Mac Pro, the iPad Air and iPad mini. Every single one of these models apparently blew everyone’s minds, could not possibly be equalled by any other company, would set the direction of hardware for years to come and was proof that Apple really did know what it was doing and had timed everything perfectly to blow the competition out of the water.
Each one quickly became the most important seller in its category, definitely in profit and frequently in actual market share either as a total or at least in its relevant market segment.

So now, just as the hardware competitors have finally caught up and learned the lessons taught to them 3-4 years ago, Apple has mysteriously allowed pretty much all of its legacy systems to be ripe for upgrade.

Do you really think that for all this time Jonny Ive has just stopped experimenting with design in collaboration with the Apple hardware engineers? Do you really think that Apple’s increasing spend on r&d and its history of engaging in pure research on materials science has come to a screeching halt? Do you think they have completely ignored the progress that has been made on thermal output of CPUs and GPUs, display technology and storage density and speed?

How about we all grow up and ignore the temper tantrums of the extremely small part of the market that actually does upgrade to the latest model and pay attention to those that continue to use their Apple computers for several years over multiple OS upgrades with no hassles. They make up Apple’s loyal base of ever increasing repeat customers and they are about due now for upgrades that will actually make noticeable differences to their everyday computing experience.

Take it from this Apple fanboi typing this on an iPad Air 1, resting on top of the original top of the line 15″ rMBP with the first maxed out skinny iMac whirring away in my home office and glancing at my Apple Watch to double check that it’s time for me to go to bed that Apple is about to do what it does every 3-4 years: reset the design language and market landscape for personal computing.

“iPad Air 1, resting on top of the original top of the line 15″ rMBP with the first maxed out skinny iMac”

you are obviously not a high end mac user.
go read some of the posts here from people who are.

I’ve also heard that some people are perfectly happy with the G5 macs.
opinions of people like you and them who are satisfied with old tech because of your extremely limited needs are irrelevant to the discussion here.

  2. My only complaint is that when I bought a new Mid-2012 MacBook Pro it had only 4GB of Ram and a slow Hard Disk… for $1,700.00. After 1 Year I Upgraded to 16GB and 512GB SSD. for $140+$240 respectively. The Difference with the SSD was Phenomenal! What a BottleNeck the Old Hard Disks were… The SSD makes the i7 Jump like Spiderman… I mean dam. So my point is, It should have come loaded already for 2 grand!
