Jony Ive creates one-of-a-kind 12.9-inch iPad Pro, range of accessories for ‘Time For Design’ auction

“To raise money for their relocation to Kensington, the Design Museum has partnered with Phillips to stage the ‘Time for Design’ auction in Berkeley Square,” Elly Parsons reports for Wallpaper*.

“Keen to get in on the action, Apple’s chief design officer Sir Jony Ive has created something new: a one-of-a-kind accessory collection for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro,” Parsons reports. “Ive has a long history with the Design Museum, which is due to close its Shad Thames location in May, and reopen in Kensington at the end of November. He won their inaugural Designer of the Year award in 2003 for the iMac, and he also showed a prototype of a mobile phone at the museum way back in 1990.”

“His new accessory collection includes an iPad Pro housing, which has been anodised with a custom dye; a blue, suede-lined ‘Smart Cover,’ crafted from supple French leather; and an orange cover for the Apple Pencil, created from fine grain Italian calf leather,” Parsons reports. “Ive’s new products are in single editions, designed exclusively for the Design Museum event. To prove it, ‘Edition 1 of 1’ has been laser etched on the back surface of the iPad and the interior surface of the ‘Smart Cover.'”

  1. “Take Jony Ive, If I had a spiritual partner at Apple, it’s Jony. The difference that Jony has made, not only at Apple but in the world, is huge. He is a wickedly intelligent person in all ways. He understands business concepts, marketing concepts. He picks up just like that, click. He understands what we do at our core better than anyone. He gets the big picture as well as the most infinitesimal details about each product. And he understands that Apple is a product company. He’s not just a designer. That’s why he works directly for me. There’s no one who can tell him what to do, or to butt out. That’s the way I set it up.”

  2. Well that would have taken a few hours at most. I wonder what grand accomplishments Ive did in the afternoon. Could he possibly squeeze in a little work on some new Mac desktops?

  3. How ’bout designing a new Mac Pro? or get rid of that ugly hump on the iPhone case? or designing a new SE instead of recycling that old design? or … Need I go on? What is ol’ Jony doing anyways at Apple besides designing one of a kind stuff every once in a while? What is the last iconic Apple design he has done?

I too could go for that, BUT all I want is a major update to my Early 2008 Mac Pro… keep the form factor (which is great for upgrades… new hard drives, new cards, etc) make it faster with an SSD or Hybrid drive, a whole lot more RAM… This is not rocket science: I am all for letting others purchase the sleep new sports car computers. As for me, I like have the “truck”. It was Steve Jobs’ idea for the user to be able to select from both.

  5. Created from fine grain Italian calf leather and supple leather.

Jony bans leather, wood grain and green felt from iOS 7 design, or more noticeably, linear crayon design for three-year olds.

    Height of hypocrisy, sorry …

    Where’s PETA???

    1. That’s easy. No-show.

Liberals do not publicly outcry against other liberals.

Which is ridiculous and exposes hypocrisy therefore rendering their pet causes as only applying to everyone NOT like themselves.

PETA is a self righteous bad joke. In the same vein as feminists are NOT outraged my Bill and Hillary’s treatment of women. SAME THING!!!

      Wake up people.

    2. What makes this special and PETA approved is that Ives personally selected the animals from which the leather was made. They all died a natural death after a happy free-range life. However, many plants were brutally beaten in order to create the bright dies for the leather. So the Plant Pain Awareness Society is up in arms.

  7. Rather sad that the design museum is deserting the area of historical industry and innovation it supposedly represents for the up market centre of privilege that always dismissed such things as rather ‘low class’ unless covered in diamonds, gold and ostrich feathers. Selling out Conrans original ideals for it I would have said and what now makes it different to the other museums nested there. It should have moved further east if it were to move at all, to where after all the Industrial revolution had a true heart beat.

  8. Sorry but J. Ive is so overrated. Seriously? A newly colored back panel and a blue cover? Whoa? Genius -how revolutionary!

Unfortunately, Apple hasn’t come up with anything of meaning since Steve. The software has become buggy and programs like iTunes, sadly, are an overbloated mess. The company’s doing well, but unless they re-acquire some innovative zeal, Apple’s best days are over.

Johnny I’ve should stop running around the world telling people how great he is and start doing something to show it.

Very sad to be writing this. I was a huge Apple fan. First in line to buy so many products and upgrades. I’m waiting but I haven’t found much to be excited about lately.
