Apple releases Apple TV Software 6.0

Apple has just released Apple TV Software 6.0:

• Apple TV 2G (AppleTV2,1) version 6.0 (Build 11A470e)
• Apple TV 3G (AppleTV3,1) version 6.0 (Build 11A470e)
• AppleTV3,2 (AppleTV3,2) version 6.0 (Build 11A470e)

Apple TV Software 6.0 includes support for iTunes Radio, iCloud Photos and Videos, iTunes Music Store purchases on Apple TV, Podcasts, and the AirPlay From iCloud feature which allows users who’ve purchased content from iTunes store to play that same content on other Apple TVs.

To update your Apple TV to the current software version:

1. Select Settings > General > Update Software. Apple TV checks for an available update; if one is available, a download message should appear.
2. Click Download and Install to start the download process.

Do not disconnect your Apple TV during the update process. The Apple TV status light may flash slowly during the update and restart process. This is expected behavior.

    1. “Among new features included in Apple TV 6.0: support for iTunes Radio and purchases from the iTunes Music Store, the ability to view videos and photos from a shared photo stream and Airplay From iCloud, an upgrade to Apple’s Airplay wireless streaming software that allows people who have purchased content from Apple’s iTunes store to play that same content on other Apple TVs.” — John Paczkowski, http://allthingsd.com

    1. FYI….Looks like update won’t work over Ethernet connection. I have 2nd and 3rd gen TV’s and had to disconnect Ethernet and use wifi connection before update would finally work. Seems like this has been a bug in the last few updates.

    1. Same problem here. Tried restoring Apple TV software using iTunes on a 2009 MacBook and a 2012 iMac using latest software first. Unfortunately the Apple TV light keeps on blinking fast. Related error code is 1611.

  1. Damn! I’m bricked too! This happened to my old ATV2 with a previous 5.x version & I had to buy a special, to me, USB cable & restore it. After a time it started working again but the damned front LED light never worked again. 😕

  2. If it includes iTunes radio what does it do to the existing radio app on my ATV3 ? I use it all the time. In fact that’s all I use ATV for, Airplay performance is crap whenever I try to play a video from my iPad/iPhone.

  3. Tried running update from Apple TV. Ran through the full process, after the two restarts, went into recovery mode.

Plugged into my main Mac (running the new updated iTunes), iTunes saw it, attempted to restore. Could not complete, Error 9. Tried again four times. Restarted Mac. Tried again. Same Error 9.

Luckily had other Macs around the house. Tried the restore it on an older MacBook Air that hadn’t been updated to the new iTunes yet. Tried it on there, and it restored just fine first try.

Unfortunately, it restored to 5.3, not 6.0. That’s silly… so now, plugged in Apple TV, spent much time re-configuring it, only to realize have to run software update AGAIN. It ran exactly the same as before, restarted twice for the 2 steps. Rebooted and… it worked. Yay!

However… this is getting worrisome. I’ve been an Apple customer for almost 20 years, and am a longtime software developer for their platforms. I’ve had numerous issues with iTunes Match, as well as a few other problems (iCloud and hardware), all in just the last 1-2 years. The Apple “it just works” mantra of reliability seems to be going down the drain. It’s just lucky I had extra (non-updated) Macs laying around, and my Logitech mouse happened to use a MicroUSB cable to recharge…

I have no objections to Tim Cook, and think he’s doing a fantastic job running Apple. I’m not trying to be a chicken little. I am pleased with their new products, and understand that he is a tremendous CEO running an incredible company (both in terms of quality, as well as scale). In the end, my Apple TV is now updated (but the one in the Bedroom, I’m a little afraid to try and update it… will post back when I do).

I just hope Apple doesn’t continue to decline where it matters most — stable, reliable products. That is and always has been their number one benefit, in my book. I am to this day a die hard Apple loyalist, and am optimistic that these issues will be resolved, or are just temporary/anomaly issues from their servers being so overrun, or another random circumstance.

Keep up the good work guys, but don’t forget to surprise and delight your customers with products that Just Work™.

  4. I always get a chuckle out of all of the idiots who repeatedly have to be the first to do an update. Then the predictable whining and crying because they’re having a problem. But I would dare say some of these are merely the usual trolls on this site spouting their usual lies about owning Apple products.
