“The name for Apple’s next generation operating system – Mac OS X 10.9 – will be called LYNX,” AppleScoop reports.
“This report comes from a reliable source who claims to have talked to someone from inside the walls of Apple,” AppleScoop reports.

OS X Fat Freddie’s Cat!
Pussy Galore!
Yes! +1.
I just hope they dont have any dispute with the deodorant company in the UK of the same name: http://www.lynxeffect.com/uk/home/2012/
But still – Lynx sounds a lot cooler than Lion. I think maybe apple should have saved the ‘Lion’ name for the final version of the OS.
There’s no risk of confusing a computer OS with a deodorant, and Lynx is a public domain name, like Lion or Tiger, so can’t be trademarked. It’s logo can be, however.
Cheetah was the name of the first OSX. Despite the name it was slow as an old dog.
Still it was a sign of huge potential.
They couldn’t use Calico because many people (including MDN) are already accusing Windows 8 as being a jack of all trades and a master of none.
Linux weeps!
“LYNX” <–The only wild cat species left?
Anyway. Another Day. Another Rumor. I'll believe it when I see some reliable evidence. Rumors are crap.
BTW:
• Beta testing of 10.8.3 has been delayed. That's a fact.
• Beta testing 10.8.3 will probably start just after US Thanksgiving. That's a guess.
• TechTard journalists all wear tighty whities causing testicle compression and over-heating, resulting in Low-T and mental derangement. That's a rumor.
Call the next version, “booger.”
Don’t get me wrong, I like innovation and always look forward to the next cat from Apple and love the release of new stuff but as a small time programmer of Mac apps (for home & work use), it can be a real struggle keeping on top of frequent change – quite often the code you are writing can end up using deprecated code before you get a chance to polish it off – by the time you have rewritten everything to bring it up to date another cat is waiting to pounce!
It must also be a real trial for technical authors wanting to write Objective C programming books since the very essence of their material shifts right under their noses and with deadlines to meet they quite often end up releasing books for sale that are out of date even as they are published.
There have been a LOT of changes to the way we write code for OSX / IOS (particularly over the last couple of years) – I bet some authors have had to do complete re-writes simply to remain relevant.
I have a couple of books now on order from Amazon that are always having their release dates adjusted into the future – some books now take years to ship and then they only get a valid shelf life of a few months at best.
As a result, it’s fast becoming a waste of time to purchase tech books at all nowadays, you may as well save some money and just look everything up online. However, Apple’s on-line literature often doesn’t keep up with the SDK changes so this approach doesn’t always bear fruit (even Apple seem to suffer from their own work rate!).
You could argue that with the proliferation of on-line resources nowadays we should all just stick to the internet for source material – however some of us actually do still prefer to pick up a book!
That said, I think Apple is way out in front when it comes to innovation and quality, long may it continue – my MBP is a thing of beauty and my work iMac makes anything from M$ look like something out of the Ark.
Just thought I would offer a slightly different perspective, no intention of trying to sound negative but constant change can be a double-edged sword for some sections of the population.
You are absolutely correct!
Change for the sake of change will make you bleed!
Excellent! I love these big cats and would appreciate to see some in the woods around my house! 😀
But… Will this run on an Octo revA?… That’s another iQuestion…
Lynx sounds nice.
But what comes after 10.9 ?
11 ? Oder 10.10 ?
There are no more cat names available.
Or better, not much more. (say for 10.15)
First. Where’s the iTunes 11? Hey Apple. Who cares about codenames?
I actually doubt this moniker could be anything but an internal name. LynxOS was developed back in the mid 80’s as a very good real time system. There are still valid (i.e., NON-troll) patents around on aspects of that OS held by the inventors.
