“Analyst Shaw Wu with Sterne Agee spoke with industry sources who led him to believe the Apple-HTC settlement will result in a net licensing fee of between $6 and $8,” Neil Hughes reports for AppleInsider.
“With HTC expected to ship between 30 million and 35 million smartphones in 2013, that would result in annual revenue of between $180 million and $280 million for Apple.,” Hughes reports. “‘This is apparently lower than the range AAPL initially proposed,’ Wu wrote in a note to investors on Monday. ‘But to put this in context, this compares to press reports indicated HTC pays (Microsoft) $5 per phone running Android.'”
Hughes reports, “Wu believes the settlement will serve as a blueprint for Apple’s ongoing lawsuits with Samsung and Motorola.”

So Google is now effectively paying Apple $8 for each Android device made by HTC. Apple is slowly building a wall around Android. Inch by inch, Google is being hemmed in by the Apple juggernaut… Look to the EU and US response to the standards-essential-patent abuse by Samsung and Google for the next big nail in Android’s coffin… Google and Samsung have built their houses on sand..
Plus they are paying another $5 to Microsoft. So the “free” OS is costing HTC $13, I’d guess that would rule them out of the low cost/margin handsets. Business is not looking good.
Between $6 and $8? So, umm… $7?
