Mitt Romney: Does President Obama think Steve Jobs didn’t build Apple?

“Mitt Romney said again today that President Obama didn’t believe that Steve Jobs built Apple,” Domenico Montanaro reports for NBCNews.com. “‘To say what he said is to say that Steve Jobs didn’t build Apple Computer or that Bill Gates didn’t build Microsoft or that Henry Ford didn’t build Ford Motor Company or that Ray Croc didn’t build McDonald’s or that Papa John’s didn’t build Papa John’s Pizza,’ Romney said today at a town hall in Ohio. ‘This is the height of foolishness. It shows how out of touch he is with the character of America. It’s one more reason his policies have failed. It’s one more reason why we have to replace him in November.'”

Steve JobsMontanaro reports, “It’s not a new line. Here’s what Romney said yesterday: ‘The idea to say that Steve Jobs didn’t build Apple, that Henry Ford didn’t build Ford Motor; to say something like that is not just foolishness. It’s insulting to every entrepreneur, every innovator in America. And it’s wrong.'”

“The Jobs charge is based on the Romney campaign’s reading of President Obama’s speech on Friday in Virginia, in which he said, in part: ‘If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen,'” Montanaro reports. “But does that mean the president doesn’t believe Steve Jobs built Apple? Here’s what Obama said in his statement after Steve Jobs died: ‘By building one of the planet’s most successful companies from his garage, he exemplified the spirit of American ingenuity.'”

  1. Nope. You just dug yourself deeper, “David”. However, I’d say that Romney’s faith is a mental disorder. It’s founder meets the DSM IV criteria for schizophrenia.

  2. First, take a quote out of context.
Second, spin it to suit your purposes.
Third, manipulate a gullible, unthinking public into believing it.
    Fourth, win an election.
Fifth, stick it to the chumps who swallowed your twaddle hook, line, and sinker.
Welcome to American democracy, 21st century style!

  3. of course, Apple would be nowhere without the publicly-funded Internet, created by DARPA and paid for by John and Jane Q. Taxpayer. Thanks for making the awesome internet, government! And Apple thanks you too

    1. Please point to that part of the Internet that the government pays for. What part of the Internet is OWNED by the government? What part of the Internet is MAINTAINED by the government? Exactly what percentage of your taxes is allocated to sustain the Internet? PLEASE, tell us, where is it? Is it in the communication satellites? Nope, those are owned by specific private communications companies who PAID NASA and even the RUSSIANs to launch them for them. Yes, our tax dollars did pay private companies to develop the technology for the space program… but again, it was PRIVATE COMPANIES that developed the technology! Aerojet General, Lockheed, Boeing, Morton Thiokol, IBM, Texas Instruments, even Apple, and a host of other PRIVATE and PUBLIC corporations bid on contracts paid for with public funds to do the actual design, creation, and construction work… not government bureaucrats. Even the ideas usually come from private think tanks. Only the funding comes from government. . . and many times, even the management is on contract!

  4. Obama: The Internet didn’t get invented on its own.  Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

The Internet was a defense project with no plans to make it available for commerce.

    Obama is really clueless.

    1. But the economy was running pretty good then from the Clinton years and all the money pumped into the banks and lack of regulation. Crashing coming soon after this video.

  5. I’ve been reading the book “The Sociopath Next Door”, and from what I’ve read so far, Romney has sociopathic behavior. I base this on how he continues to re-write his own history, like the healthcare system he developed as governor that is a blueprint for ObamaCare, as well as countless denials of things he’s done and stood for in the past, even when there’s video to prove it.

And as a dog lover, I cannot forgive him for placing his dog in a roof-top carrier and, when the dog got sick, hosed him off at a gas station and the put him back on top of the car.

I liked Romney when he saved the Olympic Games, and when he created his state’s healthcare plan.

But he’s a serial liar, and a man without a conscience.

  6. There’s no such thIng as public funds. Without the private sector the notion of public funds does not exist. If you tried to pitch an idea to venture capitalist 100 years ago with an description as such….” a combustible engine with 4 wheels that rides along side bicycles and pedestrians” With the amount of regulation we have today, investors would laugh you right out of their office”. Politicians and individuals who promote this sort of Govt are the same people that have never signed a payroll check on the front.

  7. I’ve met scores of “really bright people.” Most lack the ambition to succeed at self-employment.

It’s courage that Obama overlooks. I never hear him speak of that. And that separates the trough-feeders from the leaders.

  8. Fools. Some bark out the required Democrat lines, others spout the latest Republican anti-Obama conspiracy theories.

A two-party system would appear to be a poor solution for an effective government. If a two-party system was what we had.

There is one party – Those Who Are In Power. All Democrats and Republicans belong to it. Their single concern is to stay in power. They spout propaganda to rile people up and keep them focused off reality, to polarize them with issues of left vs. right that are actually irrelevant.

If you consider yourself a staunch Republican, and think Obama is the AntiChrist, you have been duped. You have been tricked. You are being taken advantage of.

If you consider yourself a Democrat, and believe Obama is the hope of civilization, you have been duped. You have been tricked. You are being taken advantage of.

The Republican and Democratic parties exist only as constructs, as illusions to keep you powerless and ignorant. And they are incredibly successful at it. The public foams at the mouth over things like contraception, but ignores the fact that their own federal government does not perform in the interests of its own citizens. That our human and civil rights, and our quality of life our eroding from neglect.

We enjoy incredible freedoms and quality of life in the United States of America. But our Federal government needs to be completely dismantled and re-created in order to become effective and actually work for its citizens.

    1. Doug,

Yes its a mess. But re-created?? So we can make a bigger mess.. How about just getting back to what the founding fathers set up. Two sides that work towards a middle of the road solution.???? And take some of the crazy power and secrecy out of it. Just a thought.

  9. We don’t need MDN smearing the POS that is
Mitt Romney on its readers, nor do we need Romney’s feces all over Apple and the legacy of Steve Jobs. How insulting to us all!!!! How disgusting- and, at the very, very least- divisive.

  10. really?

This site is increasingly dumb and dumber- even if my comment gets deleted- it doesn’t make it any less true.

There is no doubt in my mind america is going to fall apart. Just look at it’s citizens bickering nonstop about whose team is better.. not that we are all americans. but oh well… some shit is just inevitable.

  11. American politics is hilarious.

From the outside looking in, your leaders who speak such and think such, controls the US army….shudder..

I am very sure American barbarism will not end with Iraq or Afghanistan.

You guys will attack Iraq and Iran and every other country who threaten your power.

    Rome should fall.

  12. Bottom line – Obama said what he said to whip his base up so he could gender support for raising taxes on the “rich” to pay for infrastructure but that is a fallacy anyways since stimulus dollars do not lead to long term employment.

According to new CBO data, the top 20% pay almost 70% of all income taxes in this country. The bottom 50% pay none.

I wish every President well but I would much prefer someone who has demonstrated a level headed ability to build a successful business across a wide range of industries, govern well (no one does it perfectly), and run a large multi-faceted event like the Olympics with many moving parts. This is more important than the fact that he has changed his mind a few times.

If people weren’t allowed to change their minds with approval, then Apple would be far less successful than they are now.

  13. if anyone things that Steve Jobs build Apple all by himself, I suggest you ask Woz or any of the other geniuses working at Apple at the time… My guess is they’ll say it was a group effort.

  14. “if you have a successful business, you did not build it on your own. Someone else made it happen”.

Well, yeah! Someone helped jobs build Apple—Wozniak. The man behind some of Apple’s early products, along with Jobs.

Anyways, I just finished reading, or listening to, the speech. All I can say is: Obama is an amazing speaker. But to fix America, we need an amazing leader. And Obama does not seem to be that one amazing leader.

While we do need to consider te needy and help them if we can, I don’t think these approaches, such as Obama care and taking more from the rich, is all a good solution.

(and like always, what I am about to say is how I understand the situation and is only my opinion. Therefore, what I am about to say is completely debatable and may not be all correct or accurate).

First, I want to give my thoughts on Obama care. Based on my understanding from listening to the ewe and reading articles, one reason Obama Care was created is to make health Care more affordable. That’s the good thing about it. However, as I have heard in the news, what is happening is that soe people are “irresponsible” and think they don’t need insurance because tey are fine. However, when they do get in a situation where they need it, they don’t have it.

Okey, this is one of the things Obama Care is supposed to fix. And, sorry, but this is also where I will hit it down. While Obama has good intentions as he plans to enforce this law, the government can not always have our backs. What I mean by this is: they need to be less intrusive.

Each decision has its benefits, but it also it’s consiquences. The benefit of not having to pay for health insurance is you save money. However, the consiquences is you don’t have it when you really need it. And that will put a burden on you when you pay for services in full price. That is where I hit Obama care. If you get in a situation where you need insurance and did not get it earlier, that is on you.

It was there. You had an oportunity to get it. But you chose not to. So, today you are to deal with the consiquences. The bottom line here is government can not help us when we make bad decisions.

Secondly, Obama care, being mandetory, would mean trouble for existing health care companies. This is pretty self-explanatory. If you require every citizen to buy this specific insurance, more than likely, this will put existing health care companies out of business. If the citizens are already paying for this government issued insurance, and they are required to so thee is no choice, they will most likely not get insurance from these other insurance companies. Therefore, putting them out of business and getting more spoke unemployed.

In addition, trot having a choice does not sound like the American way, does it?

Thirdly, a short, sweet into the point question: How can we afford to pay for this program?

Next, taking from the rich. As from the rich, that’s where the money is. Yes, but are they willin to give more? If I started a business, put a lot of time and money into it and became a multimillionerre, do you really think I’ll be okey with it when just run along and take away what I made by working by ass off? After taking a large risk and putting in a ton of money on something I was not sure would succeed?

It would be a different story if I was born rich, but what if I worked my butt off to get where I am now? Then you just come along take it from me then give to to some who are just plain lazy, don’t want to work but want to earn, etc? There are some people like that. Ad it ticks me off tat they still et all this cash when tey can’t even show the initiative to do some hard work.

To get back on th Jobs did not build Apple thing, in short, my response is excactly who are you referring to when you say “someone else”? Yes, we do all work in collaboration. A business needs to have customers to be successful, they need other businesses to build products, help improve products, etc. But when you say that someone did not build that business on their own, I can question that.

    1. “Secondly, Obama care, being mandetory, would mean trouble for existing health care companies. This is pretty self-explanatory. If you require every citizen to buy this specific insurance, more than likely, this will put existing health care companies out of business”

You must not understand how health insurance works in these United States.

The Affordable Care Act “ObamaCare” does not mandate that you purchase any particular insurance plan- only that you have coverage. If you are currently covered by a private policy or an employer provided policy you can and will keep it. If you are on Medicare, TriCare, CHAMPUS or other government provided plan you can and will keep it. Only uninsured or underinsured people will be likely to change insurance.

Most people who gain coverage under the ACA will do so by buying into a policy underwritten, administered and sold by a PRIVATE company with a public subsidy. Even government provided insurance is funneled through private insurance as a claims processor/ administrator. This is how Medicare is run, with each state contracting out the administration of the plan. Most private businesses are self insured, but designate or hire a private insurer as a claims processor and policy administrator.

“If the citizens are already paying for this government issued insurance, and they are required to so thee is no choice, they will most likely not get insurance from these other insurance companies. Therefore, putting them out of business and getting more spoke unemployed.”

There will be no government issued insurance. All of the policies will be contracted to or issued by private insurance companies through an exchange. Private insurers stand to gain at least 30 million NEW customers under the ACA.

“In addition, trot having a choice does not sound like the American way, does it?”

Not having insurance is not a choice. Choosing a policy via an exchange is a choice.

      1. Like I said, my points are completely debatable and not all accurate. This is just how I understand the situation. And like everyone else, there are certain areas that I may misinterpret r misunderstand.

So, thanks for clearing things up.

      2. You left out the best part. It kills ‘pre-existing conditions’.

Running my own business, I was shocked at the cost of ‘private insurance’ I was even more shocked when they told me I would not be able to use the insurance for the things I needed it for. Mainly my wires asthma and allergies and my kids allergies.

I asked them what the point of having it was? ‘Emergencies’ they said. 1200+ a month for emergencies? I told em I would roll the dice instead, I started a medical savings account.

Insurance is a racket and the consumer almost always gets hosed. This levels the field a bit..

        1. Word of advice for those doing pay as you go:
Most hospitals, clinics and Doctors will grant you a significant discount if you pay at the time of service- it can be as much as 50% in some instances- but you usually have to ASK.

They do not volunteer this information.

If you would rather pay $400 instead of $800 for the same CT scan this is the way to go.

  15. MDN is the microsoft of apple blogs. Shite on shite.

Oh the irony. honestly- if you want a professional apple “legit news” site go to apple insider.. this is the enquirer of apple “blogs” no better than the idiots he icals.

    1. Most of their Apple post get 10 or fewer comments. They lost credibility as an Apple blog long ago. It’s been taken over by the likes of f2010-2012. Who I actually think is really Steve Jacks, the 1 and only employee of MDN

  16. Woz, Gates, Schiller, Bertrand, the city of Cuprtino, the state of Trxas, the Chinese government, TNT, Samsung, IBM, Fujitsu, Toshiba, Orange County, Austin ALL were contributors to the growth if Apple and Steve Jobs was the first to admit that he did not do it on his own, which was Obama’s poorly communicated point. Without Mucrosoft’s programmers developing Excel (built for the Mac) Apple would have had a rough time getting into the enterprise.

  17. No matter who you support, one thing is for certain. If any of us who hold a job took as much time off as the President and the Congress, we wouldn’t have a job. So, why do they?
