“Samsung’s AV product manager Chris Moseley who doesn’t think Apple has the R&D chops to field a formidable TV,” John Paczkowski reports for AllThingsD. “‘We’ve not seen what they’ve done, but what we can say is that they don’t have 10,000 people in R&D in the vision category,’ hereMoseley told Pocket-lint. ‘They don’t have the best scaling engine in the world and they don’t have world renowned picture quality that has been awarded more than anyone else. … There is no way that anyone, new or old, can come along this year or next year and beat us on picture quality.'”
“Perhaps. Samsung’s clearly got a lot of expertise in display picture quality. But presumably Apple’s got some applicable experience here, too, thanks to its own desktop display offerings and the Retina display,” Paczkowski reports.

MacDailyNews Take: Besides the facts that the vast majority of consumers can’t tell the difference between a Wal-Mart LCD and a top-of-the-line plasma and that Apple’s offering, if there is any, is likely to focus on usability that may be impossible to mimic, not upon whatever the typical myopic TV set peddlers are currently touting, two more things pop immediately to mind:
• “There’s no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance.” – Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, April 30, 2007
• “We’ve learned and struggled for a few years here figuring out how to make a decent phone. PC guys are not going to just figure this out. They’re not going to just walk in.” – Former Palm CEO Ed Colligan, November 16, 2006
If you can wait a bit, do not buy a TV set right now, and if you have to: Do not buy a TV from Samsung.

“Oh, you should never, never doubt what nobody is sure about.”
from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory
(quote based on “The Microbe” by Hilaire Belloc)
With Apple’s astounding ability to reinvent existing markets, is the whole TV ecosystem, its hardware and transmission systems, about to be experience a huge leap forward (destroying many provider monopolies)?
All they have to do is have a 4k-resolution TV with a built-in microwave receiver that gets connected to a small dish. It would provide photo-like quality video to any person anywhere on the planet, along with true high speed internet access to the remotest areas. The technology already exists, and Apple already has the servers to provide the streaming content.
Impossible? Really?
How soon people forget…

Samsung: There’s no way an Apple television can beat us on picture quality.
That’s what people said about cell phones before Apple did their thing.
Samsung may very well be correct about picture quality. The problem for them is that it won’t matter. As MDN said, most people can’t tell the difference anyway, as we can see when they stand in Best Buy or Walmart and pick one out because “this one has a better picture, let’s get it”. If Apple does make a tv, the picture quality will be plenty good enough, even if it’s not technically the absolute very best. And of course the user interface will make the Samsung look like somebody’s school project.
I think that 10,000 employees number includes the tea ladies and janitors.
Survey: How long before Samsung boots Chris Moseley?
Dave already said this but the latest I heard was Sharp bought the rights to Pioneers Technology and they Pioneer had the best quality on the market. Sharp has it now and if Apple is working with them then Apple might have a heck of a TV coming. Just hope its not over priced like the Pioneer sets were!
Yes price can be an issue the current Shap Elite Pro-60X5FD 3DTV is $6K. Time will tell. If anyone is interested see January 2012 Home Theater Mag for info and a review of the Shap Elite Pro-60X5FD 3DTV or check out their web site @ http://www.hometheater.com/category/3d-flat-panel-reviews
“Those who fail to learn history are doomed to repeat it”
Palm-There’s no way Apple can make a phone that can beat ours!
MusicCompanies-There’s no way Apple can sell music on the internet and make money!
RIM-There’s no way Apple can make a smartphone better than ours!
RIO-There’s no way Apple can make an mp3 player that will beat ours!
Sony and Nintendo- There’s no way Apple can make a handheld gaming device to compete with us!
The ebb and tide of failure is littered with those who have underestimated their opponent. 🙂
I actually prefer Panasonic for picture quality.
10,000 people in the R&D vision category? Wow. Excuse my lack of knowledge in this area but what do they all do?
You would think that these would learn not to say stuff like this.
Apple will never build a better phone…
Apple will never outsell Tower Records…
Apple will never allow Windows on their machines…
Apple blah, blah, blah…
To say Apple can’t do something is begging for it to happen!
They’d be better off not commenting at all.
posted on the wall in my TaeKwonDo dojang;
“I don’t fear the man that can do 10,000 different kicks, I fear the man or woman who has practiced on kick 10,000 times.”
TaeKwonDo, huh? Maybe that saying should be…
“I don’t fear the man that can do 10,000 different kicks, I fear the man or woman that knows any other form of martial arts because they will kick my ass any day of the week.”
Sounds like Hubris or well hidden worry. Sammy used to make displays that were head and shoulders above most competitors, but not so much anymore.
When I replaced my old Samsung HDTV it wasn’t with another Samsung for a couple of reasons:
1- As an Apple shareholder I was pissed off over the rip-off Fandroid sh*t they are pimping.
2- The Samsung TVs didn’t impress me on picture quality or price/value.
Finally, let’s stop calling them TVs. Most people do not use the tuner because of Cable/Satellite Boxes and many do not use the built in speaker. What is left is little different than a computer display.
one kick 10000 times, not “on”
Ok, so I don’t practice typing, or at least my practice is not good enough
The apple cinema/ thunderbolt display has higher resolution and brighter images than any tv samsung is talking out of their ass
Apple doesn’t need to beat Samsung or anyone else in picture quality. A standard 1080p very good picture will be more than satisfactory for most people.
Apple will beat Samsung with content delivery, ease of use, and other interesting and useful features that Samsung hasn’t even dreamed about. And that’s what will sell AppleTVs, not a slightly higher resolution.
Amazing that Samsung STILL hasn’t figured out that Apple isn’t interested in a tech spec pissing match, otherwise iPads would have HDMI and USB ports.
10,000 people in the R&D vision category and 2 guys trying to figure out how to add another 20 buttons to their 150-button remote.
Apple computers weren’t about the speed, it was about the quality, reliability and customer service.
Apple OSX wasn’t about functions it was about user interface.
Apple’s MP3 iPod players weren’t about the colors, it was about providing content that was easy to load.
Until Apple’s competition puts their engineers’ focus on the user’s experience, they won’t have a chance. Did you hear that Microsoft?
Sorry, but as much as I hate Samsung, they make good TVs.
And RIM made great smartphones a few years back. Just sayin’.
Sooo the company who produced the highest resolution phone (probably soon to be tablet) is somehow not going to be able to produce a tv set with amazing picture quality? Okay samsung.
What about if Apple has Philips as Display supplier? This European brand is one of the best out there (unless in Europe)
Why can’t they just focus on designing a better product instead of boasting, posturing, and trying to win?
I think he’s right, and I think Apple knows it to.
The smart money is betting not on a TV set, but a more powerful version of the current AppleTV.
No margin in TVs
Long turn over time on TVs
Apple likes to make lots of money on each sale, and they like to sell things often to the same buyer, which is why the iPhone/iPad/iPod refresh every year. No one will upgrade a TV set every year, but for $100, they will upgrade the little black box next to their set. I know I will.
I was going to get a Vizio some time this year, but now I’m holding off on that.
I was going to buy a 60″ LED this year, but went ahead and got a 37″ Panny LCD for the bedroom and will keep my 50″ Plasma in the family room for now. Let’s see what Apple has in store for us in the next 12-18 months…
I would love to have an Apple product at the center of my living room. Hoping it’s true.
That said, I hope the Apple TV gets an upgrade that brings it feature parity with the new set. My setup in the basement theater has a big plasma on the wall but also a 107-inch motorized screen for movies/sports events . . . . and I’d love to be able to use Apple’s new features with it.
Would be the best of both worlds and I’d be willing to pay more than $99 for it.
“There is no way that anyone, new or old, can come along this year or next year and beat us on picture quality.”
And there’s why beating Samsung is easy.
