Analyst: Apple on pace to sell record 5.3 million Macs in Christmas quarter

“Apple is set to have another blockbuster quarter for the Mac platform, with the latest sales data showing the company headed toward selling as many as 5.3 million over the holidays,” Neil Hughes reports for AppleInsider.

“Analyst Gene Munster with Piper Jaffray shared the latest domestic sales data from the NPD Group on Monday, which showed Mac sales up 19 percent year over year in the month of October,” Hughes reports. “As sales continue to pick up leading up to Christmas, he sees Apple selling between 5.1 million and 5.3 million Macs during the December quarter.”

Hughes reports, “Those numbers would represent year over year growth of between 23 percent and 28 percent. Consensus on Wall Street has called for Apple to report sales of about 5.2 million Macs during the quarter.”

  1. As the world tilts, it’s tilting in favor of the Mac. Windows is yesterday’s news. OS X is for the here and now. There’s nothing new in Windows since the introduction of the Start button. Windows 7 is a UI nightmare made worse by Microsoft’s insistence on inserting features that are not thought out well or fully integrated into a logical flow of the UI. Take Control Panel for instance and compare that to System Preferences. It’s a disorderly nightmare that doesn’t classify things into genera – just into an alphabetical listing that makes you hunt high and low to make a system-wide tweak.

Funnily enough though I use Word for Mac which I think because it follows Apple’s MMI guidelines is more logically laid out than the Windows version. I used to think Outlook was the bee’s knees but it looks dated now compared to the new Lion mail interface.

I think people are abandoning Windows in droves because suddenly the Mac looks like a good deal with the MBA starting at $999, although you need to squint a bit to make full use of its 11″ screen. I can’t do with anything less than 13″ because I like a wide expanse of space. Having said that I think the 13″ MBP is well worth the price you pay for it.
