Beginning November 22, 2011, Google will end support for the Gmail App for Blackberry (installed native app). Over this past year, the company has focused efforts on building a “great Gmail experience in the mobile browser and will continue investing in this area,” The Google Apps Team blogs.
Users may continue to use the app, if installed, however it will not be supported by Google, or available for download starting November 22. BlackBerry users can continue to access Gmail through the mobile web app at http://www.gmail.com in their BlackBerry web browser.

What?!? Since when did google ever provide support?
Most people didn’t foresee the disruption the iPhone was about to bring when it was first introduced in 2007. It was like when Katrina first hit. Most people thought New Orleans had averted disaster, but then the levies broke. When the iPhone hit, competitors scoffed. Then the levies started to break. RIMM is now drowning and Google’s next. Hurricane Siri hit and Google scoffed, but Google’s search levy has been breached and it will soon be dead in the water.
On Monday I sold an iPhone 3G 16 gb to a guy who said he wanted it for a present for his son. I asked him if he owns an iPhone, and he said he has a Blackberry. I just about burst out laughing. I got $155 for the iPhone. There isn’t a single Blackberry device that will return that much of its original cost THE DAY AFTER you buy it, let alone nearly two years later.

Is this a misleading headline? Can Blackberry users still not access Gmail like most other people do through a web browser? It’s just the “native” app that’s being discontinued, if I read this correctly. Open to corrections here.
You are correct. Web browser is always available for access. However, that is really not relevant.
On virtually ALL mobile devices, vast majority of people use the native e-mail application for, well, accessing their e-mail, be it MSN/Live, Yahoo, G-mail, Hotmail or whatever else. This is for a very simple reason: if you configure your mail app for your e-mail account, you get notifications when messages arrive (or within 10 minutes of it arriving, depending on whether IMAP or POP3). This doesn’t work with browser access.
If a Blackberry user can’t get G-mail on his blackberry using the native app, he will buy a phone that can do this. Browser access is simply out of the question.
Don’t you believe it. Most users I come accross in my job are too stupid to set up their email in a native app. If you mention POP oe EMAP to them, they just stare blankly at you.

I find it amazing how Blackberry has gone from zero right up to corporate executive’s choice and then all the way down to ghetto phone in less than a decade. Quite an achievement.
Well, if you have a BB you already have a great email client, but this is still yet another a bad sign.

Hey guys, as I type this in my iPhone 4s that replaced my BB 9780 please know I’m not advocating Blackberry. Google dropping the GMail App support doesn’t matter. They aren’t dropping email support just a separate app they had originally created when the native Blackberry email didn’t support star and archive ability. Since the native email does (and has for over a year) there’s no need for an app … Or to even use the browser to check gmail. That is unless you wanted to keep your personal email away from your work emails. But with OS6 you could separate your personal/work or BES/BIS email accounts easily. You may not like BB and that’s fine but before you slam them perhaps a bit of research might help. Thanks.
