Siri answers drop hints about version 2

“Siri is undoubtedly the highlight of the iPhone 4S,” Ben Sillis reports for Electricpig. “We’ve been testing it out this week, asking it questions both serious and silly – and more often than not, it works.”

“But what’s perhaps most interesting about Siri is what it won’t let you do right now, and when it acknowledges this,” Sillis reports. “We’ve been grilling it to test its limits, and now we think we know what to expect next.”

We’ve found 11 instances so far, which all point to areas that Apple could be working on next:

• “Make a new contact”
• “Read my latest email”
• “When is the next flight…”
• “Update my Facebook status”
• “Send a tweet”
• “Download an app”
• “Play video”
• “Open iTunes”
• “Read me a story”
• “Take a photo”
• “Make a voice memo”

  1. Really ?????? they actually think those answers have some “hidden” meaning ?

Maybe it’s not Siri…. maybe its the little voices in their head.

I only saw one that might lead me to believe it is a coming feature….. That being the one on dictation…. stating it has not learned it “yet”

  2. I also hope–

    – turn on/off settings.. Such as airplane mode, wifi, 3G, etc
    – open/control apps with a Siri API. This will be game match/set
    – customization..Siri Voice/name change. Hell, even a nickname
    – an always on feature so you just call out “Siri” or some word to get its attention

      1. Actually, I’m also doubtful of the first one’s first one, too. Asking Siri to switch on airplane mode would be like shutting itself off. That would REALLY invoke some form of “I can’t do that” answer!

  3. I’d personally like siri to be able to do applescript like things

    Just imagine that
“siri, when I get an email with a subject containing “!urgent” play an alert sound then activate the mail app”
    or

“siri: silence all the alert tones every sunday at 8:00 am and turn it back on at 11:15 am”

    wouldn’t that just be INSANE!!!!!

    1. This can already be done by your iPhone/iPad actually. It’s part of the accessibility thing. Right now you have to have voice over turn on system wide for it to happen though. It doesn’t seem like much of a stretch for Siri to be able to do it too.

  4. Look at how anxious people are — even greedy — to give Siri such power! Erase your email? Change your settings? Download apps? Change contacts?

So basically you’re saying you want ultimate power to completely and irrevocably alter your system all in one place, in the complete power of a single AI entity?

Really? You really want a single power, totally suggestive to outside commands, to have tendrils in every aspect of your system? No password needed? No authority that must be granted for changes? Not even a voice test to be sure it’s you?

How very excited we all are for Sky-Net. “Defense decisions are removed from human control.” Those dystopian stories serve a purpose, you know. To get people thinking.

    1. For starters she wouldn’t do any of that if you have a passcode on your phone. Second it’s not like she’s gonna complete anything without you approving it. She asks when she’s done with a task if it’s acceptable and waits for approval.

If some one has access to your phone for long enough to use Siri, they have access for long enough to do at least one of those things that were mentioned. It’s all down to who you allow to have access to your phone.

    2. Your voice is personal. It is not very difficult to Apple to connect the security to your voice, so that Siri accepts commands made only by you. (Actually Apple has done it before with Macs.)

  5. “Send a Tweet” was a feature that the Siri app already had. In the week before it was disabled I gave it a try. Pretty cool. I guess I figured it would be a part of Siri on the 4S out of the box. Mine’s coming the 24th.
