RUMOR: Sprint gets iPhone 5 exclusive in U.S.A. thanks to $20 billion deal

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Sprint has entered into an agreement with Apple to purchase over $20 billion worth of iPhones over the next four years — that’s around 30 million iPhones,” Jonathan S. Geller reports for BGR. “It’s said that Sprint won’t even break even on the transaction until 2014, which is surely a huge risk on Sprint’s part, but why?”

“I have been going back and forth for weeks with one of my incredibly solid industry contacts on a piece of information that I couldn’t really process at first — information that is so unbelievable, even from a source this solid, that I couldn’t report it,” Geller reports. “With this new WSJ report on an Apple/Sprint deal, however, it doesn’t look so crazy.”

Geller reports, “I have been told that Sprint will be getting the iPhone 5 — yes the real iPhone 5, not the iPhone 4S — as an exclusive. And it will be a 4G WiMAX device. AT&T and Verizon would launch the iPhone 4S and get the iPhone 5 some time in the first quarter of next year as an LTE device. Globally, the iPhone 5 might be available as a 4G HSPA+ device.”

Sprint to ‘bet the company’ on Apple iPhone; to buy $20 billion worth of iPhones over next four years – October 3, 2011

      1. It’s not 20 Billion upfront! It would be paid quarterly so in theory Sprint would begin to realize profit after 90 days. That’s a good deal. They’ve got keep selling phones for 4 years but if iPhone 5-6 and beyond carried then it should be a problem. 6 million customers per quarter they’d be mad not to sign up to the deal.

    1. THE SKY IS FALLING.
      THE iCLOUDiness fogs my thought.

I’m starting to think different – please Apple oh PLEASE let there be a Santa. I want my, I want my – iPHONEtv!

  1. don’t think so..

Sprint is the worst carrier. Even though I want a iPhone 5, i’d pass on it if my option was Sprint. I know of MANY dead spots with sprint around here.

  2. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Sprint has entered into an agreement with Apple to purchase over $20 billion worth of iPhones over the next four years — that’s around 30 million iPhones…

So, wall street isn’t saying “exclusive” but the moron from BGR is.

  3. That’s crazy talk! I see Sprint with an exclusive Wimax iPhone 5, with AT&T and Verizon getting just a 3G iPhone 5 until next year when LTE becomes more ubiquitous, but I don’t see any chance in hell Sprint getting the bigger screen iPhone 5 exclusively. $20B to piss off all its AT&T and Verizon customers? Not going to happen.

YOU ARE SO SO RIGHT – MDN!!!!

  5. That makes absolutely no sense. Apple is not about to fragment their own ecosystem by giving exclusivity on one of their most anticipated products to the smallest possible carrier.

BGR has a horrible track record with these kinds of ‘reports’.

  6. I must admit my opinion is based upon minor anger about this stupid rumor.

Sprint has half the customers AT&T and VZ have. Half. 50 Million. Why would apple contract exclusively with #3 – Sprint? Can’t build iPhone 5 fast enough? Contract is too good? It’s not even guaranteed unless Sprint is financing the contract they will not even break even on.

I’m not buying any damn phone (I’m on AT&T) if I don’t get the new one on my network. Especially if the 5 comes out mid-cycle.

This is stupid and this is nuts.
(I sold my iP4 10 days ago in anticipation for the 5. NOT the 4S – standing in the shadow of a 5 on an inferior network).

    Wow!

    1. limited production capacity. Can only manufacture so many the first quarter, so only offer them on the smallest carrier until you can ramp up production and offer them on all carriers.

  7. BETTER NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! all of the people that switched to ATT for the sole reason of the iPhone are going to be upset if this happens. loyalty to customers says this can’t possibly be true

  8. Rumors. Brought to you by those that misinterpreted the Mayan calendar. After tomorrow, we will be less stressed, and the control voice will restore our regularly scheduled programming.

    1. oh come on, there will be NO more rumors about the iPhone 4S/5.
all the rumors are out there, there is nothing new to report on.

Wait… Just got an email telling me I can order the 5S now!
Damn Apple loves me more than you.

      😉

  9. Why not $50B … make it a real nightmare!

Can you imagine a CEO going to a board and say “… we’re going to buy a phone that, if not successful will put us out of business”, and “btw: other companies will get it soon”

    … I just don’t buy it!

  10. I can’t stand it!! My whole reason for living is these Apple announcements and I’m not switching to Sprint. I’ve GOT to have a new phone and I’ve GOT to order it tomorrow. PLEASE!!

  11. Sprint has to pay Apple even if they don’t sell them. Reluctantly, the Board signed off on this deal. Sprint is banking the Company on this deal.

And, if Sprint has the exclusive right to the 5, lest we not forget AT&T exclusive rights to the iPhone for three years, it would not be that hard to see it happening–by HTC or other, but by Apple?

When the uPhone came out, AT&T won, Verizon said no and mo one else even in the picture. But in 2011, this seems ludicrous especially since Apple would lose money.

Oh, well, tomorrow will clear up this horror. Bout the iPhone 5 was not on AT&T or Verizon’s inventory lists either.
