RUMOR: Wintek-made touchscreen production issue may hinder Apple’s initial iPhone 5 shipments

“A defect has presented in some iPhone 5 touch panels produced by Wintek which may affect the ability to meet initial shipment targets for the launch which is expected in October, according to iPhone supply chain makers,” Yenting Chen and Adam Hwang report for DigiTimes.

“Since the manufacturing process of touch panels used in iPhone 5 is of the same as that for iPhone 4, Wintek is expected to remedy the defect quickly, the sources indicated,” Chen and Hwang report. “Wintek accounts for 20-25% of the total production of touch panels used in iPhone 5… the source indicated.”

Chen and Hwang report, “Apple aims to ship 25-26 million units of iPhone 5 in the fourth quarter, the sources claimed.”

  1. Already predicting shortages for a product for a product for which shipping dates have not even been announced, nor has even its existence. It’s the “competition” that announces products long before they’re set to ship, and even longer before they’re ready for prime time.

Apple waits till its product is polished and ready, and supply can meet enough demand to make some people ecstatic and others salivate into a rabid frenzy, then they announce and hold a press conference. Only then do they announce the products’ existence and availability (today or a week or perhaps two out). NO OTHER COMPANY has this product strategy figured out, neither do they have customers waiting in line days before the launch like some crazed Star Wars fan.

No does any company BESIDES Apple have people moaning and complaining for days or weeks at their ability to land their devices, while still pacing the floor in anticipation of getting one… no matter how long it takes, because every one they can possibly produce is snatched up before the Chinese laborer on the shrink wrap machine can punch out for the day.

Only by stumbling and bumbling over “facts” to bring us the latest messages of shortages and doom do these analysts even have anything at all to say. (By the way, whatever happened to devastating effect that Japan’s earthquake and tsunami was going to have on Apple’s supply line, hmmmm?)

  2. Cue the pre-launch FUD.

MDN, haven’t you noticed this “rumored defect” story pops up EVERY SINGLE TIME Apple is about to launch a new product?

    Which you promptly regurgitate.

Guess what- none of these people have any clue what’s going on in Apple’s pipeline – or even what Apple’s about to announce.

  3. Really tired of these rumors. They themselves create so much hype, that when the product is actually announced and doesn’t match or compete with all the rumored hype, the wind goes out of the sails..

  4. Apple is doomed!

By the time they get that fixed Google, Samsun, HTC will all have sought injunctions prohibiting the sale of the iPhone in all developed countries.

Google has said Android is no longer going to be Mr Nice Guy, they are jointly going to STOP APPLE with the courts!

    No iPhone 5 for you.

    Booo Haaa Haaa!

    1. Given Google’s inferior reputation and track record of late, I’m not sure I would engage Apple in court. If they’re patient, I have a feeling Apple will oblige them by instigating lawsuits of their own.
