HP axing 525 Palm employees this week

“The layoffs have begun at Hewlett-Packard’s Palm division,” John Paczkowski reports for AllThingsD.

“The company, which announced plans to shutter its webOS hardware business back in August, is sacking hundreds of employees as a result,” Paczkowski reports. “Sources close to HP say the company plans to lay off as many as 525 employees, and that it began carrying out that dreadful duty this week.”

  1. M$ should hire all or some of these poor guys & gals. I’d prefer that over googlerola!
But if Apple is looking to hire a select few coders & such from the Web OS division geaux for it! 

    1. My understanding is that many of them are ex-Apple employees with burnt bridges; going back to the mothership may not be so simple. Having said that, Apple can afford to play mature and hire back talents. Grateful, smart employees can enrich a company’s innovative culture gainfully.

  2. Thats a shame. I hate to see people lose their job. Especially in this economy. Even Mister Softy employees are just that, employees. Few people ,including most on this site, have had the luxury of picking a “cool, innovative, forward thinking company” to work for. So please stop with the ” I’m so cool because I post on a AAPL site” mentality. You don’t work for AAPL. They probably wouldn’t hire you. Geez, ya probably don’t even invest, boy is it up today, in the company that you WISH you worked for. Palm was actually a very good company at one time and must have had some smart people to have developed Web OS. It was and should still be developed by somebody. I hope they find work somewhere. Hey smart guys, hope you have some AAPL Nov. and Dec. calls. 360’s are looking good today especially if you bought them last week!

  3. There must be more than “a few” great Palm QA engineers, Developers …etc who may be useful to other tech companies. Either way, it always sucks to be unemployed in such bad economy. I hope they can find a cool career with company of their choices.

  4. “that dreadful duty”…

…HP wouldnt see it like that. Once upon a time, perhaps… These days HP is like any other US corporation – they don’t care about anything except dollars.

I, for one, will be glad to see HP crash and burn…
