eWeek test drives Apple’s iOS 5 beta 5, finds ‘best mobile operating system on the market’

“Apple has released iOS 5 Beta 5 to developers, and eWEEK recently had the chance to take it for a spin,” Don Reisinger reports for eWeek. “n many ways, iOS 5 is similar to its predecessor. For the most part, users won’t be able to find too many fundamental differences between these two versions of the operating system.”

“But the improvements that have been made are major. And they’re a welcome addition to a platform that was already standing atop the mobile space,” Reisinger reports. “For example, if users swipe from the top of the screen down, they’ll be able to find a new notifications dashboard that lists text messages, missed calls, application notifications and more.”

Reisinger reports, “The iOS 5 Settings page has also been drastically changed, due mainly to the addition of so many new features. The most notable addition, of course, is iCloud. In the Settings pane, users can turn on iCloud and determine what it should synchronize, including Mail, Contacts and Bookmarks… iOS 5, as a whole, is the best mobile operating system on the market, and it sets a new benchmark for all others to match.”

    1. Since when? Week us full of idiot shills. This us a violation of the dev agreement, it’s beta software and these idiots are letting the cat outta the bag. And it is NOT on the market, it is B E T A. Pre-market.

    1. Id be game on switching back but first they need to release a version of iOS that doses more than leaving me with the impression that they are finally just catching up to the features ive been enjoying on android for the last couple of years.

Ive played with ios5 and i cant help but feel like its merely delivering an experience that is finally on par with android. Id need too see something really above and beyond android to switch. This release ain’t the one

      1. was just watching a few guys pecking at the brand new Andriod phone that appeared to be frozen. That used to happen a lot with early iPhones. It seems like there is such a wide range of experiences with Andriod. If you have your phone doing more than an iPhone 4 by all means stay with it and more power to you.

        1. I’m a fan of Android as far as an operating system goes, but I have no problem setting it aside if it does not fit my needs. If I were buying a ‘tablet’ today I would simply buy an iPad because it is the best ‘tablet’ out there.

Multiple manufacturers making Android devices is a curse and a blessing. On one hand its nice to be able to pick between different devices, while on the other you can end up either picking the wrong one, or picking a real ‘peach’ like the one it sounds like you saw locking up.

That was one thing that was nice with the iPhone, I didn’t really have to shop around as I knew what I was getting was just like the one I saw that led me to want one in the first place.

I have no deep android loyalty, Apple could totally win me back and maybe they will when it comes time for my next phone. I’m open to going back (was on an iPhone before Android).

Besides for all I know the next version of Android will suck big hairy balls.. I like to keep my options open.

        1. My typing and grammer (or lack of) is more the result of me typing my replies or posts while walking to get lunch. Work has been too busy lately for me to visit this site often during the day.

Gotta get my fix somehow so you’ll have to suffer with my screwy posts. lol.

  1. Wintards i feel need to experience a little more of that legendary KIN customer service microsoft is so famous for. A new platform designed and overseen by the Ballmer is sure to deliver in spades on that front.

  2. I’ve been borrowing a Galaxy Tab 10.1 for testing and my biz partner has a Droid X, which he insisted was the greatest thing ever til’ it got bricked by gingerbread.

Needless to say, he was envious of the Galaxy Tab, which I thought was hilarious, cuz it blows. We put the 10.1 and the iPad side by side and I showed him how much Android sucks in a big form factor versus iPad.

The android scrolling sucks and is jerky. The aspect ratio cuts off so many fixed height sites in landscape mode because it is cinematic, rather than a web friendly photographic 4:3. On the iPad most fixed height sites fit perfectly and fill the screen. Who screwed this up? Google or Samsung? Then the redundant app menus and overlapping icon tray on the bottom when you bring up a second app tray over the home screen ??? FUGLY.

Then in for the kill… “If android bricked your cellphone and they released another obvious beta that doesn’t measure up, don’t you think you should get an iPhone 5 so you don’t have to wait 6 months for the cool apps to get ported to Android.”

his comeback :: the iPhone 5 is vaporware
